Store wars continued

I recently mentioned Lowes Foods off New Garden Road near Bryan Boulevard in Greensboro has been giving out $10 discounts if you spend at least $35 because the competition is about to heat up.

Now Harris Teeter is getting in on the discount action. If you live in the New Garden Road area, chances are you got Harris Teeter coupons in the mail the other day.

You get $10 off if you spend at least $40 at its new store, which opens Monday.

Meal deals for the weekend

Time to pop open a cold one, fire up the grill (rain or shine, snow, sleet, whatever.) and kick back.

Grill ideas: Harris Teeter has angus beef boneless top round roast or top round London broil on sale for $2.99 a pound (save $3 a pound).

Kmart's supercenter stores have T-bone steaks for $4.69 a pound while Food Lion has buy up to 2 pounds of boneless whole sirloin tip, get 2 pounds free (regular $3.79 a pound).

As far as what to wash it down with, cases of Miller Lite are on sale for $15 at Southern Family Markets.

Oh for breakfast, blueberry pancakes are in order. Harris Teeter has a buy 1, get 1 free deal on 4.4-oz containers of blueberries (regular $4 each).

Harris Teeter also has a buy 1, get 1 free deal on 12 to 13-ounce packages of Eight O'Clock Coffee ($4 each).

Letting yourself go for charity

It's time to loosen the belt and let yourself go.

We're talking about all-you-can-eat pancakes, bacon and a beverage for $5 ($3 for the kiddies 12 and under) Saturday in Greensboro.

It's the Cub Scout Pack 600's third annual pancake breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Oak Ridge Presbyterian Church. The address is 2614 Oak Ridge Road, Oak Ridge.

Proceeds will benefit Greensboro Urban Ministry's Pathways Center, a program that provides temporary housing for homeless families in the Greensboro area.

Last year, Pack 600 raised more than $1,100 for Pathways.

The church is also asking people to donate nonperishable food items for Pathways.
