WORLD OCEAN DAY - June 8
Get Inspired! Get Involved! Celebrate!
WORLDWIDE CELEBRATIONS, A NEW WEBSITE AND A CALL TO ACTION
TO MARK 14th ANNUAL WORLD OCEAN DAY
The Ocean Project announced plans today to coordinate activities across the country and around the world, launch a new web site, and circulate a petition to the United Nations in honor of the 14th annual World Ocean Day.
The Ocean Project and its international network of more than 800 aquariums, zoos, museums, and conservation organizations, working in partnership with the World Ocean Network (www.worldoceannetwork.org), is helping to inspire involvement around the world, including beach cleanups, book tours, aquatic art contests, ocean music and film festivals, and sustainable seafood events. These events are newsworthy in and of themselves, while providing excellent backdrops for larger stories about World Ocean Day. A few examples include:
· Mote Aquarium (Sarasota, FL) – World Ocean Day Family Festival
· Seattle Aquarium (Seattle, WA) – Whales in Every Ocean
· Blue Frontier Campaign (Washington, DC) - 50 Ways to Save the Ocean Book Tour
· Two Oceans Aquarium (Capetown, South Africa) – Foster Children Visit
A complete list of events can be found at the new World Ocean Day website: http://www.WorldOceanDay.org.
An underlying premise in all Ocean Project activities is that no matter where you live – whether in Chicago or Shanghai, London or Los Angeles -- the ocean affects you, and you affect the ocean. Our world’s ocean generates most of the oxygen we breathe, helps feed us, regulates our climate, cleans the water we drink, offers us a pharmacopoeia of potential medicines, and provides us with limitless inspiration. Yet for too long, human society has treated the ocean as a garbage dump, decimated fish populations, destroyed critical habitat, interrupted the fundamental reproductive capacity of life in the ocean, and taken our world’s ocean for granted. It is time to give back to our ocean, and taking part in World Ocean Day events and activities will help to protect our ocean for future generations.
As a start to improving the condition of our world ocean, The Ocean Project is collecting signatures for a petition to the United Nations, asking its member states to take action, beginning with the official designation of June 8th of each year as World Ocean Day. A link to the World Ocean Day petition can be found at http://www.WorldOceanDay.org.
Thanks,
The Ocean Project
