Breaking away from the iPod masses

Joe Killian was once a self-proclaimed "pod person." Hmmm. Where have I heard that before. Wait. You've heard the storyline ... "The pod people work together to secretly spread more pods...which grew from 'seeds drifting through space for years' — in order to replace the entire human race."

Chilling. Makes you see red.

Oh, wait. Different pods.

Killian, a staff writer at the News & Record, writes about escaping from the iPod and finding something new to worship: The iRiver H10.

I don't believe the iPod mini ever came with five-gigabyte capacity. And yes, the iRiver does have a couple of features that the iPod doesn't, but "20 gigs" isn't one of them. In fact, for $70 more, Mr. Killian could have 50 percent more storage: 30 gigs. And, oh my, the iRiver doesn't show videos, nor does it play games!

People do get prickly about their MP3 players.

I was able to hack my old iPod for some extra functionality and space, but I did pay essentially the same price for the 20 gig iRiver with its extra features as the iPod mini, that had none of them and plays fewer formats (including those supported by all the major subscription services).

As far as video and games -- that's not what I'm looking for in an MP3 player, personally. I just want to be able to listen to the music I want to in the way that I want to, as much as possible. My old iPod didn't offer me that for the price of my new player and the extras I appreciate - the digital recorder, the radio functionality - don't come standard with any iPod without buying extras and doing some hacking that could ruin your device.
