Is the arcade still a bargain?

Remember dropping a quarter for a game of Asteroids at the arcade? Yes, we're showing our age. But no matter. Gone are the days when loose change would be enough to play a few rounds of video games or Skee Ball at your local arcade. (6:46)

Clash of the video game titans

The much ballyhooed PlayStation 3 - pitched as the top of the mountain when it comes to video game consoles - is getting its butt kicked by the cheaper Xbox 360.

Microsoft sold about 220,000 Xbox 360s in February compared with a measly 120,000 for Sony's Playstation 3, although the PS3 has gotten a lot more press in the past year because it's the newer of the two consoles. (PS3 launched in November. Xbox 360 launched a year earlier).

xbox_playstation.jpg

So price does matter. Both consoles are expensive, but the Xbox 360's high-end version is still $100 cheaper than the PS3's low-end version ($400 compared with $500).

But if you need further proof that price is key, look no further than the dark horse in this race: Nintendo's hugely successful Wii console, which costs $250.

The Wii easily outsold the PS3 and Xbox 360 in March.

More proof? The technologically inferior PlayStation 2, which was launched way back in 2000, still outsold the 360 and PS3 in February.

Which makes Microsoft's recent decision to release something that's more expensive, not less, worth keeping an eye on. A bold move or just plain dumb? Time will tell.

Earnhardt Budweiser sale: Coincidence?

Coincidence or something more? You be the judge, but I thought it was odd that the day before Dale Earnhardt Jr. announces he's leaving his family's race team, Food Lion advertises a special on a newly packaged 8-pack of Budweiser featuring a graphic showing his number 8 car. By the way, the special is buy two 8-packs of 16-ounce beer for $10, which is actually a pretty good deal.

Video game bargains

New video games for the Xbox 360 and PS3 usually hover around $60. That's steep, which is why it really pays to wait a few months, then buy a used version of the game.

You'll wind up saving $25 or more. There's a place you can go in the Triad for some really good deals on used video games that may surprise you. We explain in our latest mind-blowing (or mind-bending, we're talking some ponderous stuff here) episode of GameBuzz. (6:51)
