Clash of the video game titans

The much ballyhooed PlayStation 3 - pitched as the top of the mountain when it comes to video game consoles - is getting its butt kicked by the cheaper Xbox 360.

Microsoft sold about 220,000 Xbox 360s in February compared with a measly 120,000 for Sony's Playstation 3, although the PS3 has gotten a lot more press in the past year because it's the newer of the two consoles. (PS3 launched in November. Xbox 360 launched a year earlier).

So price does matter. Both consoles are expensive, but the Xbox 360's high-end version is still $100 cheaper than the PS3's low-end version ($400 compared with $500).

But if you need further proof that price is key, look no further than the dark horse in this race: Nintendo's hugely successful Wii console, which costs $250.

The Wii easily outsold the PS3 and Xbox 360 in March.

More proof? The technologically inferior PlayStation 2, which was launched way back in 2000, still outsold the 360 and PS3 in February.

Which makes Microsoft's recent decision to release something that's more expensive, not less, worth keeping an eye on. A bold move or just plain dumb? Time will tell.
