Taking on iTunes
A free, ad-supported music download service called SpiralFrog hopes to take a bite out of Apple's iTunes.
The site made its debut Monday.
The catch? The service requires users register and log on to the site at least once a month. Otherwise, the content locks up and can't be played.
"Admittedly, SpiralFrog holds your music hostage to the survey, but most other online music services keep you chained to certain permitted hardware and software, and their songs cost a buck apiece," Eliot Van Buskirk writes in a review for Wired. "At least SpiralFrog doesn't charge for the illusion of music ownership."

It's tough to take on iTunes when they music you're selling doesn't work on the world's most popular music player.
There are probably ways to get around that, but most people don't have the time, energy, know-how to figure it out.
