It's fun to save at the Y-M-C-A

Some local YMCA branches have once again got you covered as far as membership dues go.

Just donate what the YMCA describes as a "gently used" blanket by Jan. 31 and they'll waive the membership fee, which can cost up to $100 a person.

Those participating are: Bryan Family YMCA, Hayes-Taylor Memorial YMCA, Ragsdale Family YMCA, Reidsville Family YMCA, Stoney Creek Express YMCA and Spears Family YMCA.

I'll pass along any other local gym/fitness club bargains when I come across 'em, but feel free to share.

Video games on the cheap

Looking for more games to play during the writer's strike?

Circuit City is holding a clearance event on hundreds of video games for $8.96 a pop (limit three).

While supplies last.

Movies on the cheap

While you're grabbing some heavily discounted video games, get yourself some cheap movies, too, for $4.99 at Circuit City.

Surprisingly, there are some good films in the mix for that price, so says Bargain Jack.

Among the good ones Bargain Jack mentions, which I agree are worth watching, include "Road to Perdition," "American Beauty" and "True Lies".

World's cheapest car

A company in India today unveiled a car that sells for $2,500.

Tata Motors makes the tiny four-door subcompact, which gets about 50 mpg. The company claims it can fit five people if they squeeze in, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Amenities are bare bones, too: no radio, no passenger-side mirror and only one windshield wiper. Oh, and A/C is extra.

It's only sold in India for now. The company hopes to export it.

Coupon motherload

Now's the time to grab one of those "Attractions Dining & Value Guide" books, which feature hundreds of coupons toward Triad area restaurants, stores, entertainment and green fees.

We broke it in Saturday at US Sushi at the Friendly Center. Saved $12. That's about half the cost of the $25 book, which is sold by area groups including nonprofits and churches for fundraisers.

Other restaurants in the book include Solaris, Steak Street, Laddie & Duke's and Giovanni's.

Not going down without a fight

The odds-on favorite to be crowned the heavyweight hi-def video champion of the world is the Sony-backed Blu-ray DVD format.

What some industry experts believe is the final blow to the HD DVD format comes recent news Warner Bros. Entertainment said it would stop publishing movies on HD DVD in May.

We'll see. But Toshiba's not going down without a fight. The company this week is hoping cutting prices on its HD DVD players will help keep it from being KO'd by Sony. Prices on Toshiba's players are now as low as $149.99, unheard of less than a year ago.

A deal with a twist

Savvy Shopper guru Lanita Withers passed along this goodie: Get a free original or cinnamon sugar pretzel at Auntie Anne's between 10 and 4 on Feb. 2 as part of its 20th birthday celebration.

Little bit of a trek, though for Triad customers. Looks like the closest of the chain's nine stores in N.C., at least from Greensboro, is in Durham.

The buck stops at Starbucks

Starbucks is selling coffee for a buck. Yes, a buck.

The catch? You'll have to drive 2,799 miles to get it from Greensboro, at least for now.

The coffee shop king announced it's selling 8-ounce cups for $1 with free refills in its hometown amid growing competition from places including Dunkin' Donuts and McDonald's.

The suggested retail price for a 12-oz. premium roast at McDonald's is $1.07. At Dunkin' Donuts, it's $1.39 for a 10 oz. cup.

Flash forward to present day and you'll find you can get something with eight times as much memory for about the same price: Office Depot has a Kingston 8 GB USB drive for $70 (regular $130).
