Fun with grocery store coupons
Former News & Record Savvy Shopper columnist and biz writer Amy Buchanan sings the praises of a grocery store coupon Web site called The Grocery Game. It maintains a huge database of grocery store sales, coupons, rebates, etc.
"I've been doing this for about two weeks, and so far I’ve found it fun," Amy says in an e-mail.
For a $1 trial, you can check out lists for stores in your area. In the Triad, they they offer Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Lowes Foods, CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid.
According to Amy, the list tells you when items hit rock bottom prices and shows you how to combine store sales with coupons to get the absolute best deals on items.
"For example, I got Lawry’s Marinade yesterday for 65 cents," Amy says. "And I saved $55 at Harrist Teeter yesterday combining coupons, store sales, VIC specials. Spent just $25."
More from Amy: "The idea of the grocery game is to stockpile certain items when they’re a good price – toilet paper, paper towels, sodas, cleaning products, detergent, health and beauty – so you don’t have to buy them when they’re not a good deal."
She's also learned through the Web site she may never have to pay for toothpaste or toothbrushes again because stores like Walgreens and CVS are always offering rebates on them.
"I’ve also gotten lots of free deodorant or deodorant for a price like 35 cents," he says. "It’s unreal. I can also get free shampoo for Bruce (I like my expensive brands!) by combining coupons and sales."
