Getting a clearer picture on HDTVs

Pretty cool graphic News & Record artist Tim Rickard created last year simplifies the resolution confusion surrounding HDTVs. Definitely worth a second look if you're thinking about taking the HDTV plunge this holiday season.

Among the HDTV deals I've seen so far that are also worth a second look: Sharp 46-inch 1080p LCD for $898.99 at Best Buy (regular $1,398.99). Model # LC46SB54U. That's the best deal I've seen, by the way. Deal ends Wednesday.

But if money is no object, CNET has ranked the top HDTVs out there. But expect to pay $3,795 to $4,999.98.

It's only a deal if you can actually get the Full HDTV Signal... None of the local TV stations offer any LOCALLY originated HD content, they just pass the network through and Up-Convert their old signal to HD standards - but not HD quality.

Cable and Satellite rarely offer the full HD signal; compressing the bits to offer as little as HALF of the full quality signal.

True High Definition is 1920 pixels by 1080 lines or 1280 pixels by 720 lines. It's REALLY amazing when you see it; but it's rare that you can see it anymore, except on HD-DVD, BluRay DVD and computers.

I'm a former TV Chief Engineer and I should know.
