Airlines dropping fares

Discount carrier AirTran Airways, which flies out of Raleigh and Charlotte, has launched a fare sale to all its destinations for flights through the middle of the fall.

American Airlines, Continental Airlines, United Airlines, US Airways and Delta Air Lines responded by matching on routes where they compete with AirTran. JetBlue plans to do that also.

Although AirTran's sale goes through the normally busy summer months for air travel, nothing is normal right now.

"But now with many people hurting financially, fewer are taking vacations, businesses are cutting back on corporate travel and many who fly are waiting longer to book," the Associated Press writes.
