Philly
The latest press release eminating from the amorphous locale of Piedmont Triad, NC, announces that the Piedmont Triad Partnership is sending three people to Philadelphia.
Purpose: recruit biotechnology companies. I wish them luck. They will be competing with the rest of the world.
In between arm wrestling sessions with Silicon Valley and Buenos Aires recruiters I have a few food and leisure recommendations:
Having just returned from a lovely weekend in the city of brotherly love, Liberty Bell and fabulous food, the memories are fresh. In case you haven't been keeping up with hot new restaurants in Travel & Leisure, etc., Philly is a charm.
I would recommend hitting the Reading Terminal, the likes of which I would love to see in downtown Greensboro. It has a ton of stalls, selling everything from salcicca to ice cream, cheese and a the best macaroni and cheese, according to Oprah. Take the Phlash ($1 takes you all over the city) to Jim's Steaks at 4th and South Street for cheese steaks and try out Alma de Cuba downtown for some pan-Latin flare and mojitos the way they are supposed to be made. A bartender in Greensboro at a well established joint recently forgot the lime.
Pass up La Veranda on Pier 3 -- our waitress couldn't tell us the grape in a $65 bottle of wine she recommended and the dessert tray came around about 45 minutes after dinner. You can get the same view of the river for free by walking along the landing.
As for tourist attractions...Independence Hall is the best. But security takes a toll, so go early, but tickets and show up an hour before your tour so you can see the Liberty Bell first. I loved our tour guide, who called the Declaration of Independence a press release. I had never thought of it that way before. The Philadelphia Art Museum is fantastic...take a picture on the Rocky steps and take your time through the American section. Thomas Eakins oils of the Schuylkill and rowers are my favorites.
