Port of call
I finally tested the measure of cell phone number portability on Thursday. Having reached an unhealthy level of hatred with my cell phone provider (all owing to their own stupidity and lack of customer service) I decided to switch.
My cell phone number -- and my wife's -- are important to us. We have no land line, and we hated the thought of getting yet another new phone number and then remembering everyone who needed notification.
I worried about portability. Our now-former provider made it sound next to impossible to do so WITHIN THE SAME COMPANY. How wrong they were.
After shopping for new providers, my wife and I chose Nextel. Prepared to do battle, I walked into the store on Battleground Avenue.
Within half an hour, I walked out with two new phones, a good calling plan and the pledge that my current numbers would be active within 24 hours.
The associate was wrong; they were active within six hours. Actually, it would have been sooner except for a hold-up with the now-former provider.
Number portability, simply, is freedom for cell phone customers like you and I who, fleeing poor service, want someone who cares, or at least neglects us less.
Now, granted, there are major loop holes that prevent portability sometimes. If you move, you likely can't take your number with you. If you cancel your old service first, you can't carry over your number. You can't keep your old phone, generally. And not all number are portable all the time.
But portability does work, and it works well. And now you have the power to say buh-bye to your old provider and take your number and go elsewhere.

This is another apologist for the Bush Oil boys. The point is not the percentage of one's personal budget that gasoline consumes. The point is that somehow in a period of unprecedented absolute oil prices (could not care less about inflation adjustment myths), oil companies have colluded (with the aid of the VP) and are currently gouging the buying public. If Exxon/Mobil were only passing on the cost of oil and not gouging Americans, how did they make more money last quarter than any company ever?
