Voting machines: go see them for yourself

Readers at this blog have seen a lot about voting machines over the past few weeks. Are you curious to see what all the fuss is about? Well here’s your chance.

From the Guilford County Board of Elections:

Public Demonstration of Certified Voting Systems

December 14, 2006

Marriott Hotel Downtown
(Triad Ballroom)

2:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Recently, as a result of changes in law, the NC State Board of Elections, decertified for further use in elections in the state, many of the voting systems previously employed. The Votronic touchscreen system which has been deployed in Guilford County since 1995, was among those older systems that cannot meet the new requirements of state law.

At the same time, the State Board certified two (and provisionally certified a third) vendors of voting systems from which the counties may purchase a new system. The two certified vendors are Election Systems and Software (ES&S) and Diebold Election Systems (with Sequoia Pacific Systems being provisionally certified).

The ES&S and Diebold touchscreen and optical scan voting systems will be demonstrated in Greensboro, as noted above, on Wednesday, December 14th, affording Guilford County public officials and other interested citizens the opportunity to view the voting system options available to the Guilford County Board of Elections. (While, until receiving full certification, Sequoia will not be allowed to participate in these state designated demonstrations, the company plans to privately secure facilities at the Marriott to make its system available for review as well.)

The Guilford County Board of Elections encourages you to take advantage of this opportunity to preview these systems and will welcome your input on this important decision for all Guilford County voters.

Formal demonstrations are planned to begin at 2:00 p.m. and be conducted every half-hour with the last beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Thanks for the notice.

Did you know that Guilfords machines are not disabled accessible, and would have to be replaced anyway because of the FEDERAL law, the Help America Vote Act?

Election Director Gilbert seems to imply that the only reason his machines are obsolete is because they don't produce a voter verified paper ballot.

The voting machine companies only do as much as they are forced to do, and that way you have to keep buying new equipment.

Oh, just imagine if they would put a simple printer port on them, like any PC has.
