Friday appointments

It’s time again for a quasi-random listing of people from the Greensboro area who have been chosen to serve on various state boards and commissions. Gov. Mike Easley has appointed:

  • Sen. Katie Dorsett of Greensboro to the N.C. Interagency Council for Coordinating Homeless Programs.

Dorsett is a member of the N.C. Senate, representing District 28 in Guilford County. She received her bachelor’s degree in business from Alcorn University in Mississippi, her master’s degree in business education from Indiana University and her doctorate degree in education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Council duties are to advise the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services on issues related to problems for persons who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, to identify and secure available resources and to provide recommendations for efforts and policy initiatives in carrying out programs to meet the needs of the homeless. The council has 29 members, each serving a three-year term. The governor appoints all members.

  • Nancy King Quaintance of Greensboro to the N.C. Zoological Park Council.

Quaintance is vice president of Quaintance-Weaver Restaurants and Hotels in Greensboro, Raleigh, Cary and Winston-Salem. She is a member of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s Hotel, Travel and Tourism Program Advisory Board and was named Restaurateur of the Year in 2004 by the N.C. Restaurant Association. Quaintance received her bachelor’s degree in hotel and restaurant management from Cornell University.

The council advises the Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources on the basic concepts of and for the Zoological Park, approves conceptual plans for the park and its buildings, advises on the construction, furnishings, equipment and operations of the park and establishes set admission fees. There are 15 members of the council, each serving a six-year term. The governor appoints all members.
