Middle colleges and the fire code
I mentioned this story over the weekend:
RALEIGH -- Guilford County's middle college program and similar partnerships between high schools and colleges throughout North Carolina could have been derailed by a quirk of the state fire code, say education officials familiar with the problem. The legal issue that would have forced such schools off college campuses apparently was fixed by the last bill that legislators passed before they adjourned early Friday.
But fire inspectors say they are concerned because colleges don't have to meet the more stringent fire regulations written to protect public school students.
