Veto

The governor has vetoed Senate Bill 542, “An Act To Allow Reasonable Access To State Facilities And Employees For Certain Employee Associations.”

From a release on the veto:

By enumerating the right of certain associations to have access to state facilities and employees to sell products offered on the commercial market, the legislation would also give an unfair competitive advantage to insurers affiliated with these particular employee associations. This provision, at the very least, gives an appearance of endorsement of these products by the state of North Carolina, which is inaccurate and therefore not acceptable.

I’m sure the honorables will just be tingling with the possibility of coming back to town for a veto over-ride session.

Is this the same b.s. that keeps the Chamber of Commerce, for example, from offering medical insurance that small businesses can buy into affordably? If it is, this really smacks of being anti-business in North Carolina.

A little support of entrepreneurs and small biz would be nice. I hear they do Dell exec's dry cleaning in W-s...

This bill was really crafted at the behest of organizations who if I called them unions would get upset with me.

Basically, it was meant to allow the teachers' groups and state employees' groups to have membership meetings where their workers worked.

This has nothing to do with what you're thinking about, which basically is a question of allowing affiliate groups to get together and offer health insurance.

Thanks; now where do I go to complain about the other one?

Mark Binker said:

I don't know about complain, but you might call Davidson County Rep. Hugh Holliman, a Democrat and members of his party's leadership in the House. He's big on insurance issues and - unless I'm just totally bonkers and am remembering stuff that didn't happen - may have done some work on your issue or something quite similar.

Strikes me as an appropriate veto by the gov.

Mark Binker said:

Yeah, I can't imagine that's going to be one that's going to stir up a hug over-ride movement...especially since Easley did an EO to cover the issue.
