Immigration may win in the polls, but it's not the top issue for NC votes, methinks. The top issues is always jobs. The top things to talk about are things on the news. People vote for what affects themselves and their pocketbooks the most, she types cynically.

Keep in mind, this was a poll conducted of N.C. residents. And part of the story there talks about how immigration as an issue is something that Republicans identify more strongly as a motivator than Democrats.

And, finally, I think that of the people who say a candidate's position on immigration will change their votes, a high proportion would say immigration is a jobs issue.

When I've talked to people who say it's an issue, they mainly identify three themes:

1) Illegal mmigrants are having an effect on the local economy.
2) Undocumented workers are a strain on public resources like health care and public schools.
3) Illegal immigrants pose a security problem, both in terms of mundane things like driving on the road and broader national security questions.

The first theme is the strongest, the jobs theme. That is why you'll hear candidates talking about punishing companies who hire undocumented workers.

So, if you think that jobs is the strongest issue in NC, that doesn't necessarily box out immigration as a part of it.

actually, its the cheap labor that the immigrants provide that supresses the rest of our jobs.

we are probably losing more jobs to outsourcing to China and other countries where the wages are about .20 cents an hour.

So, we distract ourselves with our happy hatred of Mexicans people and meanwhile, the rich corporate donors pay our scapegoats low wages while the rich corporate donors laugh all the way to the bank.

People in our country are so easily misled -

If you don't want low wages - then put the corporate criminals in jail - they are the ones creating the demand for the dirt cheap labor.

If you don't like our crappy economy, then quit voting for idiots who facilitate and reward companies that outsource our jobs.

While you are at it, do some research on the purpose of scapegoats - while many are busy blaming the mexican immigrants for our country's degraded status in the world, most are not looking at who really caused this.

Our rich fat cat millionaires love the cheap labor, and while we speak, President Bush is working to increase the number of immigrants, and also create a corridor between Mexico, US and Canada.

Its a darn shame that our lowest wages are a dream come true for the humble eager Mexican laborer.

Survival is the number one feature of human beings, and people will go where they have to in order to feed their children and themselves.
