Happy Sunday: Want-to-bes edition.
Good Sunday morning. Here are a couple stories that ran in today’s paper:
- Former N.C. Sen. John Edwards is widely expected to be a candidate for President in 2008, not that he’s saying quite yet. What was really striking to me is how pretty much everyone I talked to for this story had an opinion about Edwards’ run. At least a few people refuse to chat because they don’t know enough about the subject of a story. If nothing else, Edwards has got some big time name recognition working.
- Legislators around the state are lining up for the chance to be Speaker, although why they want the job is beyond me.
As always, the comment lines are open. Capital Beat will return to regular blogging this week.

I read with interest the possible candidates for the position of Speaker of the House for the upcoming session and noticed Alma Adams was not there ... After all of the accolades about all of her years and years of experience and leadership in the House and her great accomplishments in raising the states minimum wage, something NO ONE ELSE was able to do, why isn't she a consideration for the Speaker position ... just wondering ...

Olga, I’m going to assume you’re being a bit facetious since you ran a pretty lively campaign against Alma this fall.
I will say that just because someone is a successful advocate on an issue or cluster of issues does not necessarily mean they would want to be Speaker or be very good at it.
