Is a hologram just a hologram?

From the lede of a story in today's paper:

RALEIGH — The small hologram patch that began showing up on North Carolina driver's licenses in December hardly looks like the first step down the road to perdition, or a multinational union that sacrifices national sovereignty.

But motor vehicle administrators say although North Carolina may be the first in the nation to use what they call a "common security element," the state isn't on the leading edge of anything other than a new way of telling whether a license is legitimate.

That hasn't stopped conservative Internet sites and talk radio from getting riled.

I recently made a trip to my local CVS pharmacy to purchase Claritin-D (containing pheudoephedrine) for my allergy symptoms, and was suprised when the clerk used a scanning device to scan the back of my NC drivers license. I then had to sign a waiver on the electronic credit card pad to purchase the Claritin-D. I can understand why they track the pheudoephedrine purchases (it is used to make "meth"), but now my name is in a database where "big brother" will always be watching me, all because of my choice of allergy relief. This is only the tip of the iceberg on how the government IS monitoring our movements, purchases, etc...
