Taylor Sawyer, 15: "I had never met a congressman, and I wanted to."
There's something sweet and sad that it's news when a teenager is excited about meeting a Congressman.

There's something not-so-sweet and very very sad that the most substantive reporting this paper can do on the 6th district congressman is this puff piece. Oh, and, by the way, it's not news.
How about taking Coble to task once in awhile for his voting record, which diverts more and more of our tax dollars every year from investment in our nation's future into the pockets of a wasteful, corrupt and increasingly dangerous military industrial complex?
How about asking him why he and Congress haven't done more to help the displaced residents of Mississippi and New Orleans? The result of his voting pattern has left our nation weaker and left people like this young lady's displaced family unable to rebuild their lives in their own community after a natural disaster. Coble and Congress have a lot to answer for, but reporters and editors don't ask hard questions anymore -- unless it's about sexual orientation, a sex scandal or a lapel pin.

Yikes Laura, did ya have a little too much turkey?
I congratulate Ms. Sawyer for having an interest in Mr. Coble, our government, and her aspirations to possibly work in the governmental area. Hopefully she's aware that there will be many more "Lauras" out there. I commend any young person that is pursuing their dream. What is sad is the number of students/adults that can't even pick their congressman out of a crowd. I wonder how many 15 yr. olds even KNOW the name of their congressman. We need more Taylors and less Lauras.

Laura:
The remarkable part of the story, to me, was about the youngster in question. Let me ask, would you have had the same reaction were she visiting with Watt or Miller?
Let me also point out that the story was written by Jim Schlosser, a veteran writer who does mostly features now. It was not written by a member of our politics and government staff.
And finally, we have run stories, some recently, in which sources were critical of the Congressman. Not every story about a sitting Congressman can be harsh and not every one will be positive.

Tom: heck, I get excited when kids are interested in politics for a different reason: my future employment. She's almost certainly a future customer for folks in my line of work.
