Forrester running to replace Shaw
Guilford County Commissioner Linda Shaw is getting ready to step away from her post as Republican National Committeewoman.
Her replacement will be elected at the North Carolina Republican state convention in Greensboro this weekend. At the same time, the party is expected to confirm Rep. David Lewis as Republican National Committeeman.
Republicans I've spoken with this week say they only know of one candidate, Mary Frances Forrester, who is running to replace Shaw. Other nominations could arise from the floor, but Shaw and other leaders say Forrester is likely to get the nod.
Forrester is the wife of Sen. Jim Forrester, but has been a party insider in her own right. She is a former chairwoman of the Gaston County Republican Party, has been a delegate to the national convention and has served in roles such as parliamentarian and bylaws chairman for various GOP organs.
She attracted some less than welcome attention from the gay press when she penned this piece for the N.C. Christian Action League website.
My fellow Christians, make no mistake. It is under the guise of tolerance that the homosexual agenda is seeking to change the course of Western Civilization, redefine the family and rob our children of their innocence.
Reaction came here, here, here, and here, among other places.
My guess is that it's unlikely the furor surrounding her piece probably won't be much of a roadblock to winning the committeewoman seat.

Yet I have have not read your report on this! Have I missed something are you being dishonest by not reporting when the liberals do something wrong.?

For those unable to penetrate Doug's message: He is referring to Gov. Mike Easley's use of state aircraft.
To answer the two questions in the post:
Why bother to write a post on the upcoming Republican convention and who's running for national committeewoman: The convention is coming up in Greensboro (actually going on today) and it seemed timely to remind folks what was going on other than just speechifying.
As for the Easley using state aircraft story: It's even older. It dates back to 2002 when I was still covering the GSO city council, gas was under $2 a gallon and the N+O looked at the use of state aircraft during the first two years of Easley's administration. It has been reported on off and on ever since.
I believe the report Doug is referring to originated with Carolina Journal, which I did read this week and didn't seem to reveal a whole lot outside the well-established pattern.
There's two ways such a thing would make it into the News & Record. First, if the AP or other wire service that we subscribe to moved it. As of yet, I don't believe that has happened.
The second way would be for I or one of my colleagues to write about it. I was tasked to other assignments this week - covering the budget, presidential campaign, etc... Frankly, I don't think the report breaks a lot of new ground, although it does establish that a pattern a lot of folks have found to be distasteful has continued through the Easley administration.
