No texting while driving
Rep. Garland Pierce was stumping for his bill to ban texting while driving, one of several bills meant to curtail bad behavior while behind the wheel this section.
The bill is co-sponsored by Rep. Pricey Harrison of Greensboro.
It's worth noting that Greensboro has something of a special interest in this bill. A UNCG professor was hit by a driver while he biked home from work. The driver was texting at the time.
Rep. Maggie Jeffus brought up this case during Pierce's presser today. Here's that video:

We also need a bill to prohibit putting babies in the back seat because I see parents all the time turning around to check to see if their kids are eating or choking on their crayons. Kids should have to sit in the front seat ... no wait, that would be even more distracting. Maybe they should have to be in the trunk.
But what if you don't have a trunk?
And of course, we need to outlaw driving while lipsticking, changing radio stations unless the dial is on the steering wheel, eating McWhatevers.
Plus it's probably time to go ahead and outlaw billboards and street signs. I see lots of people looking at them instead of at the road ahead.

Luckly the texts were found by the Cops!

When bikes are outlaw, only fools will have bikes

Looks like this legislation has a shot. Most states are taking text messaging seriously this year, but ignoring the larger overall problem of drivers yakking on cell phones. It's as if the handheld cell phone debate is on pause for this politically popular ban. A good place to track all of this nationwide is handsfreeinfo.com -- check the comments for the pros and cons.
