Thankful for...meetings???

Rather than spending time with your family over the Thanksgiving break, wouldn't you rather spend it with the Guilford County Board of Education?

Fortunately, the school board is giving us that opportunity, with a six-hour retreat scheduled for Tuesday night.

The retreat will run from 4 to 10 p.m. Here's the agenda:

4:00 - 5:00 p.m. - Status of Board Goals

5:00 - 6:00 p.m. - Governance Committee Matters for Review

6:00 - 7:30 p.m. - Role of Magnet Schools and Schools of Choice in Guilford County Schools

7:30 - 8:00 p.m. - Feeder Patterns for IB High Schools

8:00 - 9:00 p.m. - Strategies for Taking Next Steps in Student Achievement and Continuing to Close the Achievement Gap

9:00 - 9:30 p.m. - Substitute Pay and Accommodating Teachers as Parents

9:30 - 10:00 p.m. - Funding for Athletics

10:00 p.m. - Adjourn

Once again, a long meeting when most of us may be heading out of town or doing our turkey shopping. But glad they are fitting in somewhere especially that huge, long overdue raise in substitutes' pay.

At the present time, a person who subs for an assistant teacher makes more than a person who subs for a teacher. Go figure?

A teacher's assistant who is pulled to sub in a room makes a lot more than a substitute in the system for the SAME exact work. Many, many times the substitute is also more educated as some assistant's still do not have their two years of college. (They could have opted for the "test" - I think - in lieu of the two years of college. Not sure some have taken that either.) Beside making more in money, don't forget sick days and vacation and insurance that an assistant teacher receives. Life just isn't fair. Glad a "paid volunteer job" for me.

Seriously for those who need to work, I am glad they are finally addressing this long overdue issue.

Now when will they talk about: Substitute Teacher of the Year; Janitor of the Year; Teacher Assistant of the Year, etc. Can we bring in busloads of students to place their votes for us and give out some suggested ballots?

p.s.

Bruce,

Either you or the School Board forgot to put the quotes around "choice". I know that you do know better by now. You surely did a cut & paste from their website?
