Town meeting

If you've had your fill of football Sunday afternoon, you might want to check out a public forum on the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

The forum, sponsored by the Community Dialogue on Education, is from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Gillespie Park Elementary, 1900 Martin Luther King Boulevard in Greensboro. Members of the public will have the chance to get information and share opinions about this sweeping school reform law.

No Child Left Behind, one of President Bush's first and most important domestic initiatives, holds schools accountable for reading and math test scores. Schools that don't meet the standards for all groups of students (white, black, disabled, poor, etc.) face sanctions, such as allowing students to transfer to a different school. No Child Left Behind also requires that all classes will be taught by a "highly qualified" teacher by 2005-06.

THANKS for posting the notice, Bruce. This should be a very informative meeting. The folks from CDE have worked hard to make sure EVERYONE leaves with a better understanding of how NCLB affects our schools.

I wish that the Aycock Drumline could perfom at this NCLB forum on Sunday. I would come just to hear these phenomenal kids play. They are the epitome of what can happen to students when given a chance. And I'm not talking about a lottery "chance."

Common Sense,

I was at the CDE meeting all morning on Tuesday, November 9 and I have a copy of the written agenda that we discussed for Sunday's town meeting. We discussed the agenda all morning.

The Aycock Drumline was definitely on there to play on Sunday. Perhaps you will have a chance to go and hear them afterall.

I attended the Town Hall Meeting hosted by the Community Dialogue on Education this afternoon at Gillespie Elementary.

The blessing for me was again, meeting wonderful, caring, concerned parents and members of this communty who give up their personal time to show up and find out what's going on with the public schools, and to contribute their thoughts and energies in the hope of creating better, excellent public schools.

Thank you CDE for putting on such an important event. You did a great job of facilitating. I feel this is very supportive of our community.

Please consider doing another.

There was an excellent article in today's News & Record discussing the Town Meeting. Parents are not happy about having all the assistants continually pulled out of the classrooms and having the principals play "musical chairs". This has been discussed at CDE meetings many times. Glad to see it was covered in the press.
