Violence at Andrews

Got something to say about the recent rash of fights at Andrews High School?

The News & Record has set up a special message board to post your thoughts on the problems at Andrews.

Police have responded to fights at Andrews for the past three days and so far this school year, police have filed 117 charges at the High Point high school.

Living in the opposite end of the county I could never fully understand why all of those Southwest parents protested so vehemently about their children being forced into a lottery to either HP Central or Andrews. Now I understand, actions definitely speak louder than words.

I noticed that the half-page advertisement for the school safety forum has migrated to further back in the paper this week as the reports of violence at Andrews escalate with each passing day. I believe the last couple of days it is located near the crossword puzzles in the classified section. Is there a particular reason for this ad placement in with the used refrigerators and Ford Pintos?

Taters,

Dah....do you really think they planned it that way? Like when the move the school board meetings to High Point when a lot of Greensboro parents might be coming? Like when the time and address of the Commissioners meetings have been left out of the News & Record when many speakers where coming to talk?

Maybe it is just being "redistricted"; is truly "puzzling" and is truly secret "classified" information the public should maybe not know. Could maybe the used refrigerators be for extra ice packs in case of black eyes? Could they use the Ford Pintos to drive to another county to go to school? Just some things to think about. It truly is "puzzling" - look for the clues.

Now that our teachers have completed their cultural sensivity training and racial healing workshop, it may be time for Dr.Grier to find the funds to send all of our teachers to self defense class.

The articles in today's paper were well done (thanks, Jennifer). It seems like all schools are having problems, ranging from bullying to fights and at my son's school a "hit list."

We owe children a quality education within a safe environment. I'm not sure which of the many programs for problem solving/discipline/diversity training/ etc is most effective, but I have no problem with the district doing this type of program; however it's obvious to me that the enforcement of problems is not uniform or consistant within any one school much less the entire county.

We must come to some sort of conrete discipline guidelines, and they must be enforced. If children know that they have no consequences when rules are broken then the rules will not be followed. There should be a clear path of what will happen if rules are broken. i.e. If you cuss at a teacher/admin/student then you recieve XYZ-- no questions, no doubt (and it will not matter what sex/race you are)--- then enforce the rule.

I fear that the emphasis on low expulsion rate is taking preference over following the rules. Are we really doing these children a favor when we don't make them follow rules. If they go to work and have a fight, won't they lose their jobs? Or will they get sensitivity training? More important why are the very small minority of students getting away with disrupting the education time of the students who follow the rules?

I'm going to follow this closely- it will be interesting to see what steps are taken to address the current rash of violence.

Jennifer,

I too enjoyed the articles today. You sure covered a lot of territory. They were very informative.

Debora, you stated that it is the "very small minority...."causing problems. If that is the case at your school, you are truly lucky. I am here to tell you and sad to say, in some schools this disrespect is status quo and widespread.

I only sub elementary school and there are two schools I probably will not go back to. A sub who is a regular and very capable subbed 5th grade the same day I had 4th. She told me at the bus stop, she broke down and cried that day and was never coming back to that school; the kids were so disrespectful. I had 4th grade. The first time 30 KIDS IN A CLASS - no assistant; same class later, I think down to "26". You have no assistant to have an unassisted lunch. The cafeteria is so loud; you eat for about 10 mins. because of constant disruptions. Out of 26 students, 10 were good; 13 disrespectful - out of seats constantly; talking out loud to each other all day; sexual inuendos; some bad language to each other; in each others face; taking things from inside other students' desks; pushing and much more. I left there thinking, "if this is what we just 'accept and allow' in 4th grade, what will these same kids be like in middle school?" I left so "down" all day. My husband told me not to go back and I have not decided if I will or not. It was that draining emotionally.

This was only one day; imagine day in and day out with no support to help with discipline. You cannot teach in that kind of environment. Other kids who want so bad to learn just sit there with these sad and frustrated looks on their faces.

At the other school I had 5th. It was equally as bad. You just feel so bad for the kids who want to be there and learn. They try so hard and you just feel helpless because of all the other disruption and self respect.

I have been subbing for 5 years so I can what it should be verses what we are are "allowing" in some schools. It is the students who control the schools and they know it.

Meant to say "disruption and disrespect" - not "self respect" - We wish.

Just a little too sleepy and rushed yesterday - sorry for all the typos.
