Calling all teens
The News & Record is starting up an exciting new project: a weekly Teen Page, where local high school students will serve as writers, photographers and illustrators.
This is a great opportunity for Guilford County teens to hone their skills and express themselves in print. For us, it's a chance to get some younger voices and ideas in the paper. After all, who knows more about what teenagers want than teens themselves?
Former News & Record business reporter Amy Joyner will serve as the Teen Page editor. They couldn't have picked a better person for the job. Of course, I may be a little biased about Amy, seeing as how she's my wife.
If you (or your son or daughter) is interested, here are the details of the News & Record's Teen Page.
OK, we at the News & Record like to think we're a young, hip, happening bunch.
But, let's be honest here: for the most part, we're not. And that's why we need you.
We're creating a page designed for teens and - with your help - by teens. We can't do it without your input.
We want you to write about the things you care about. So if you're interested in writing, taking photos or doing illustrations for the paper, let us know.
We want to hear from Guilford County students in grades nine through 12. To apply, write a letter explaining why you would like to be a correspondent and what experiences you could bring to the page.
Writers' applications should include two to three story ideas and a sample of your writing.
Photographers' and illustrators' applications should include two to three story ideas and samples of your pictures or drawings. Samples cannot be returned; however, JPEGs or professional-quality copies of original photos and illustrations are acceptable.
Be sure to include your name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, school, age, grade and the name and telephone number of a teacher who can serve as a reference.
Correspondents will attend occasional meetings and an orientation at the News & Record.
If you just want to help us kick around ideas, send us a letter and include your contact information.
The deadline for applications is February 28. Send your applications to Amy Joyner, Teen Page Editor, News & Record, 200 E. Market St., Greensboro, NC 27401 or send e-mail to ajoyner@news-record.com.
