District struggles with rising diesel prices

If you missed it, the News & Record on Sunday published this story about how rising diesel prices are hitting bus fleets hard. Schools have large bus fleets, and thus large diesel bills.

Guilford County Schools has gotten some help from the state, and has used some state transportation money set aside for other projects (painting, extending lifts so larger buses can be worked on)to pay for the higher fuel bill.

But it hasn't been enough to keep up with the rising costs.

And charging to the rescue is ... a mild winter?!

Savings in energy costs might be enough to cover the deficit from the rising fuel prices, according to Chief Financial Officer Sharon Ozment.

Don't whine about it, stop the lottery in HP and stop the busing. I think all the parents within in walking distance of SW will gladly spring for a new pair of Keds for their kids.

Bruce/Jennifer,

I read the Scoop today about the "Get Terry Grier Outta Here" magnet that is for sale on ebay. Tonight on WXII (Channel 12) 6:00 news, there was a good story about it. I think I understood them to say that the proceeds were going to Union Hill Elementary PTA.

Can you verify that? Maybe it will get the bidding higher knowing that the proceeds are going to a needy school.

Thanks

I HAVE ZERO SYMPATHY FOR A SCHOOL BOARD THAT FLUSHES MY TAX MONEY DOWN THE TOILET AT ANY WHIM. THEY KNOW EXACTLY HOW TO REDUCE EXPENDITURES. DO I HAVE TO SPELL IT OUT?

N O M O R E L O T T E R Y

UNTIL THEY ADMIT THIS, THEY CAN HAVE BAKE SALES AND BUS WASHES TO RAISE MONEY. SCHOOL BOARD INCOMPETENTS, WANT SOME CHEESE WITH YOUR WHINE?

And what about bus safety for our kids?

Bruce? Jen?

Well, bus safety obviously has been a problem, at least on some routes.

The district's bus drivers actually have a phenomenal track record of driving safely. They do a great job for not a lot of money. But it's hard to maintain discipline while keeping your eyes on the road. How many of us acted up in the back seat while Mom was driving? Multiply that by 60 kids and it can be a problem.

Some buses are equipped with security cameras, but while they might help with after-the-fact investigations, they aren't going to make kids behave.

So what should GCS do to make buses safer? Any suggestions?

Eliminate unnecessary bus routes between high schools in High Point would be a step to improving safety and reducing fuel costs. How about a little constructive multi-tasking on behalf of the children and taxpayers of Guilford County.

For anyone who missed the GREAT news story on WXII 12 last night. You can view it on their website! Just go to WXII12 and click on the Headline about the Terry Grier magnet on EBAY!

That's the funniest thing since Billy Yow screaming at the commissioners meeting last week.

I'm so happy that this county is at least entertaining.

Bruce and Jennifer, have you bid yet on Ebay? You know you'd love that magnet.

Barbara Ann said:

Rich,

You are right about entertainment. We must be lead boring lives. I found Linda Shaw to be quite good - every time she leaned over the mic and said "6 to 5" - I thought how true. It was the way she said it that made me laugh.

Last night on the news they said the magnet money was going to Union Hill Elementary. Now that is a good cause.

On bus safety, you need assistants on those buses to watch the kids. Also the GCS hiring policy of allowing felons to work for GCS needs to change too.

I am proud to announce that I will be donating all of the profits from my new book to Guilford School System to help supplement the cost of fuel for their bus fleet.

The name of my book will be "How to Destroy a Successful High School in Four Years or Less"

This will be a how-to book that will show the step by step process of how the Superintendent and the School Board of Guilford County are methodically killing Southwest Guilford High School.

The main characters in this murder instruction manual are, Dr. Terry Grier (The Mad Scientist),Dot Kearns(The Socialist Queen),Susan Mendenhall(Desperate Housewife who thinks being a school board member would look cool to her tea party gals) and Alan Duncan(Griers'Valet).

A special bonus section will be included in the book titled," Lets' make High Point Central High School the best high school in High Point"!!!!
This section will be Penned by Debbie Gallimore.

Remember Folks,a purchase of this book will enable our children to continue to ride circles around High Point without having to worry that our school system will go belly up.

Slak,

Don't forget the chapter by DG on "Violence" - that it's always been in our schools - it's society's fault.

Save room for that chapter. It will be a long one.

It sure made for a great speech to the back of the room at Ray Collier several weeks ago.

Rich said:

Will there be pictures? I was hoping that you'd have pictures of those red flags? Ouch.

Buckmtn said:

Slak, who did you say would be a Desperate Housewife, Susan?? Hum, if that were the case I can guarantee that Terrell Owens would have been running out of that locker room.

Every parent of a high school student in High Point should call Jim Moen's office (370-8920) and request bus transportation for next year, including the ones in walking distance of your school. Even if you don't plan to use it -- you're entitled to it.

I'm sure they are counting on most of you to provide your own transportation. Let them pay for their silly ideas.

A mild winter! Come on Oz! Cut the strings.

Child Killed in Va. School Bus Crash
April 18, 2005 11:00 AM EDT
ARLINGTON, Va. - One child was killed and more than a dozen elementary school children injured Monday when their school bus collided head-on with a garbage truck at a busy intersection, authorities said.

The drivers of the bus and truck were hospitalized in critical condition, as was one of the children, said Chief Carol Sauliner of the Arlington County Fire Department. The other 13 children, ranging from kindergartners to fifth graders, received minor injuries and were taken to area hospitals.

Arlington County Police spokesman Matt Martin said the school bus apparently was trying to make a left turn when it was hit by the truck at 8:40 a.m. at the intersection of two major thoroughfares in this Washington, D.C. suburb.

Passengers on a Metrobus that came upon the scene helped pull children out of the bus.

"A lot of them were bleeding," said Metrobus passenger Willena Roney, 43, from Arlington, Va. "They were scared and upset."

The children were students at nearby Hoffman-Boston Elementary School. Arlington County schools spokeswoman Linda Erdos said counselors were dispatched to the school and the hospitals to work with students and families.

Parents, some in tears, rushed to the school after hearing reports of the accident and were met by police, school personnel and "much confusion," said Missy Jones, who went there to check on her second-grader, who was not involved in the accident.
