More budget goodness

Man, do those Guilford County Board of Education members love to meet or what?

You already know about their Friday 8:30 a.m. session to conduct a line-item review of the budget. Well, the board is adding another budget meeting at 6 p.m. Monday.

This get-together will feature public comment on the budget, so if you want to make your voice heard, you can do it here. Board members also will be taking budget-related comments at their May 10 meeting.

All three meetings will be held at the central office, 712 N. Eugene St. in Greensboro.

Hey Bruce,
just when is the general public going to have time to read/watch the Friday thing. Have you found out when it will be on TV? I guess we could all take off work tomorrow and go (HEHE)

Yes please post the TV date. The problem is everyone needs a copy of the budget; time to review the budget; and you really need some background in accounting to understand the budget. Kind of like understanding tax forms. Also you need to be able to decipher county funds; state funds; federal finds; matching funds; grant money; etc. Are we having fun yet?

Then keep in mind, this is only the preliminary budget. It can change; the commissioners have to approve it.

But at least it is a start for those who have questions.

For those going to the meetings (sorry can't make it Friday or Monday) here are some questions to possible ask:

1. What is the status of the $500K proposed for "racial diversity" training by a so called ministry that has not seemed to be so "open" to the public? Separate of church and state issues? Is this money still proposed?

2. What will be the actual cost of busing for the next 3 years for the HP "Choice" Plan?

3. How many trailers do we now have being utilized in GCS? How old are these "temporary" trailers? When do you plan to replace them with real buildings? How many classrooms are you tearing out for specialty uses and replacing them with trailers for regular clases?

4. Hey - what about those substitute raises you have been promising for so long?

5. How many new highly paid positions do you plan to add at Central Office this year? What are the proposed job descriptions?

6. How many buildings/property does GCS currently own that is not being utilized? (Ex: Craven) What is the value of these properties? If you have not plans to use the properties can you sell them or offer a long term land lease to potential investors?

These are just some ideas. I am sure you all have a lot more questions.
