Starting school
As most of you know, a new state law requires school districts to start the school year no earlier than Aug. 25. That's when Guilford County Schools students return to class.
But a handful of local schools operate on a year-round or alternative calendar. So for those schools, here are the first days of school:
- Hampton Elementary: July 21
- Oak Hill Elementary: Aug 1
- The Middle College at Greensboro College: Aug 8
- Brooks Global Elementary: Aug 9
- Johnson Street Global Elementary: Aug 9
- The Early/Middle College at GTCC East: Aug 9
- The Early College at Guilford: Aug 16
- The Early/Middle College at GTCC: Aug 16
- The Middle College of Entertainment Technology at GTCC: Aug 16

Bruce,
I raised some questions for you or Jennifer on the previous subjects on white bread, but I haven't seen an answer. Have you taken a moment to look at it as yet? I and others would like to know the answers to the questions.

Jennifer/Bruce,
Why haven't you posted the front page story regarding Andrews High School on the Chalkboard?
Here's the link for anyone who may not have seen it:
http://www.news-record.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050715/NEWSREC0101/507150313/1001/NEWSREC0201
In fact, there should be an entire strand started for this topic. I think many of us are looking forward to commenting, but I'll wait until you post the story here.
Thanks.

If anyone wants to respond to Ciara's opinion piece, you're more than welcome to offer your opinions and perceptions in a letter to the editor or counterpoint column.
I believe the limits for those are 250 words and 400 words, respectively. They can be sent to edpage@news-record.com or to:
Letters to the Editor
The News & Record
P.O. Box 20848
Greensboro, NC 27420
(NOTE: You will have to put your name and contact number on anything intended for publication. The number won't be published, but your name will be.)
Ciara's piece was originally part of the Minority Journalism Workshop tab, but was reprinted as part of a sort of "young voices" column. I don't know if the word limits on that are different. There was no word limit when it ran in the workshop tab.
I believe there has already been interest expressed by a fellow classmate to write a rebuttal. However, I don't know the status of that since editorial is not my department.

Sorry about not posting a thread on the Andrews story until now; it's been a busy day. But I just put something up for you guys to talk about. Enjoy!

Jennifer,
You must not have read my post carefully. I was not offering an opinion or perception in my previous posting. I was asking you and Bruce some questions that I thought that you might take seriously as education reporters in Guilford County. I was suggesting that investigating some questionnable areas of this story might be a good subject matter for you as education reporters. The reported presence of racism at Southwest High would seem to be a very hot topic of discussion and investigation, but both of you seem to want to ignore it. Neither of you have even acknowledged anyone's post and questions on this story. News-Record published this story, and it seems that the representatives of this newspaper should be willing to discuss it and/or investigate its crediblity. Otherwise, it's just a hit and run story with no documentation for its charges. I am surprised that the News-Record is willing to print such a story without ever researching and investigating whether it has any elements of truth and accuracy. It was not printed as a letter to the editor, and even in those letters, your newspaper makes some effort to ensure that there is some documentation for what is written and published.
