Students produce own newspaper

This is the education blog and I failed to post a link to a student-created newspaper here. Duh. My bad.

I'm correcting that now. Here's a link to SoundOff, a newspaper tab created by seven local minority students during a weeklong session June 20-24 here at the News & Record.

Every year we invite minority students in the area to test drive a career in journalism. This was the 25th anniversary for the Minority Journalism Workshop. We had a really good crop of students this year. They interviewed the head of the Transportation Security Administration at PTI airport, wrote book and movie reviews, took photos and we even had an enterprising young man who drew an editorial cartoon. (I'm so jealous, I can barely draw recognizable stick figures!)

Some Chalkboard readers mentioned seeing the July 7 editorial in the N&R by Ciara Lilly, a recent Southwest High School graduate. She tackled a very difficult and personal topic: racism. The original opinion piece ran in SoundOff, which you can access at the link posted above.

We also have a journalism opportunity now that is open to any student.

If there are any students out there reading this, we have a new Teen Page that will be starting soon.

"The ‘Boro" should launch around the same time as school starts, features editor Susan Ladd tells me. It will run every Thursday. This year's staff has already been selected, but teens with suggestions, ideas, etc., can contact Teen Page editor Amy Joyner.

Here's Amy's contact info:

And don't forget, "The 'Boro" editors will be recruiting new folks at the end of the school year for next year.

You failed to mention when the "Majority" workshop will be held?

The "Boro" ???

By its very name it seem to be discriminating against the children of all the communities that surround Greensborough.

Why someone's child from Gibsonville could come to the "Boro" and go to Four Seasons Mall and be intimidated by the stares of the children from the "Boro". Or worse yet a child visiting the "Boro" from the Macedonia section of High Point could be scarred for life.

liz said:

So you're saying "The "Boro" is for the "other" kids?--meaning all non-minorities? Or is it that minorities can apply but yet they still get their "own" workshop?

I'm so confused.

Why does the N&R want to perpetuate this separation of race?

What's wrong with a "Journalism Workshop" where color is not even addressed?

Jen,

Since the N&R continues to support Grier and his nonsense, I am cancelling my paper. The printing of this article is no accident; In fact, the timing is perfect to validate the need for racial healing in our High Point schools. I can't think of a better way to spend $500,000. What I want to know why is High Point the only area that needs to be healed? Now I am not attacking you; it is tpofb that keep printing this crap. What I also want to know is why this student transfered to Southwest in the first place? I am tired of Southwest being portrayed as a racist community!

Jennifer,

It was very interesting to see in the "Sound Off" link, the Bios of the different minority students involved in the journalism workshop.

I happened to notice that Ciara Lilly chose not to list a favorite teacher in her bio. After reading her letter in the N&R the other day, where she ripped a well respected teacher at South West High, I now believe that Ciara may be the one who needs to look at herself in a mirror when making racism accusations.

I also noticed that another minority student in your workshop also attended South West High.

Would you believe that his favorite teacher was listed as the very one that Ciara Lilly so blatantly Slandered?????????

It seems that this minortity workshop may have been used as a tool for N&R, Guilford County Schools and the usual racism screamers to manipulate this young lady into writing something that probably did not come from her experiences..

Shame on the people that continue to use the Race card.

Shame on the N&R for not looking into such volatile accusations before printing such Rubbish.

7-Star, I think we all know by now that without the standard deck of race cards these people have nothing to say.

You are supposed to succumb to the chant of "I'm White and I'm Ashamed."

Has there been an answer yet to why the N&R does not offer a workshop for students, regardless of skin tone?

lu said:

Or the chant could say, "I am white and I was born a racist, but I don't know it."

General,

You are so right.

I hope this teacher has a great lawyer who specializes in slander cases.

This teacher is one of the best at Southwest and well liked and respected by many of the students of ALL colors.

If Southwest is such a bad school, why did the overwhelming majority of students pick that school in HP Lotto? And why did this student transfer from Andrews?

IMHO, it is the same powers that be as always pushing this race deck of cards. They are starting early to position for the elections. Just proves they must be scared if they have to start this early for Nov. 06. It is quite obvious that this student definitely had some prompting in writing this piece.

Let's see. It is being discussed on this website, on another N & R website, it had huge title letters in the printed copy, was it over the allowed number of words? The Greensboro bloggie groupies are out in full force for her support over at the other N & R blog site.

Yep, sounds like a well orchetrated effort to me.

Jennifer,

Please do not let the issue over Ciara Lilly's Slanderous article in your newspaper go to rest.

To many times the N&R runs an article that seems to be on a time line with the needed GCS agenda, only to find out later that the article is filled with half truths and outright lies.

By the time the truth comes out to the public, ussually the irreversible damage has been done and the School Board has taken the money and ran.

Make a stand Jennifer, Go to Southwest and find out what the real story is.

If you let this issue go, we will know that you to are only a hand puppet for the "Grier Gestapo".

Please respond... Will this Issue be thrown in the closet with the rest of the Dirty Laundry????????????

So which liberal "leaders" helped organize this "student" newspaper? Who oversees it? Who guides the students at to what they should or should not print? What's the political agenda of the "advisors?"
Do they have racial quotas for reporters like the N&R wants? Or will they be fair, instead?
Will both sides of issues be presented, or will it be more of the blabbering racial crap so prevalent in everything that comes out of the school system these days?
Get a life, kids, race is not the ONLY thing happening in the world today, no matter what the school board would have you believe.

All Star said:

Don't you find it ironic that this second opinion came out in time for the school board to waste $500,000 of the tax payers money on racial healing for North High Point? What about all the money that will be wasted on long bus rides?

Sure sounds like an end to justify the means.

If racial issues exist in our schools, as large as this county is, surely they are do not just exist in one high school. Neither are they limited to one particular race if they do exist, or even to just to race. What about short people, fat people, nerdy people, etc.?? What about the new student who is just a little insecure and a little over sensitive? What about students who make things up about teachers because they can't cut it or receive a bad grade and want to get even? These things do happen.

If Guilford County Schools wants to open people's eyes to any racism, they could simply purchase a few copies of the movie "Crash" and show it in the schools. It demonstrates racial issues among many races. It would certainly be cheaper than spending $500,000 healing everyone by questionable self proclaimed "ministries".

It is very apparent that others have an agenda of their own to make Southwest look bad.

COME IN JENNIFER, COME IN!

If you are out there, please answer my question.

Will you go to Southwest High and investigate the accusations brought forth by Ciara Lilly??????

Dough said:

BTW, the link to SoundOff doesn't work. The new beta site, I guess.

All-Star, I agree with you completely about "Crash."

I've actually suggested to the Southwest Guilford Middle School's leadership team that it consider using "Crash" as a springboard for discussions among our staff about the infinite issues it raises about how we choose to interact with one another. (I teach there.)

Just out of curiosity, does it offend anyone when programs are offered only for girls, such as in the area of technology? At least one of the students at my school participated in such a program earlier this summer; there was an article about it in the News & Record. I only bring that up because of the issues raised about the Minority Journalism Workshop. I have mixed opinions about such programs, but I understand our country's history well enough to know why some people think they are important to offer.

On my own blog, I've posted a long piece in response to Ciara Lilly's column. I hope it does not offend anyone, but I realize that in writing, saying, or doing anything, you always risk offending or upsetting at least one person.

The piece I've posted is titled, "My Flood Of Reactions To Ciara Lilly's "An Encounter With Racism At Southwest."

Feel free to read what I've written and respond to it.

Sincerely,

Hardy

Technology programs, home economics, mechanics or whatever should be offered to both sexes. When you get into the area of sports and there are differences in strength and body builts that is a different story.

I do not see why there should be a minority writing workshop. What is wrong with having a workshop for students who express an interest in journalism.

Workshops like this only make the divide among the races wider.

Donald Fowler said:

Ciara Lilly's second opinion has an almost Janet Cooke ( Jimmy's World )stench.( as in ficyion ) Amazing how much space was given to so little substance. Allen Johnson, John Robinson and their corporate masters are obsessed with race and the pages of this once decent paper reflect it.
