New school year, another board meeting

Tomorrow will be a busy day in education.

It is the first day of school (although a handful of schools with year round or extended calendars have already started).

And, the board of education is meeting that night. The 5:30 p.m. meeting will be in the usual location on Eugene Street.

Discussion that night is expected to include an overview of the first day of school, updates on the 2005-06 budget, and continued talks on redistricting.

See the entire agenda here. You'll have to click on the link to the Aug. 25 meeting to open the agenda.

The meeting will be aired live on the district's cable channel 2.

Well, let's hope the opening day goes better than it did last year. It would be tragic for it to be worse.

What will the BOE do about the fact that substitute teachers has not gotten any adjustment in wages this year. Current pay is $57 for non-certified and $75 for certified.
Winston-Salem Forsyth pay $63 and $68 for non-certified and $78 for certified.

This issue must be taken care of.

Gosh Joe, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for not giving up on us substitutes. It is pennies after taxes but the just the gesture to think of the subs for a change would be nice. With all the TA cuts though, I would not hold my breath.

I cannot go to tomorrow's meeting; daughter has tennis; hubby gone. Maybe you can speak "again" for us. Thank you.

You did a super job on your Andrews speech.

And Jay I hope this year goes smoother too - kids are packing extra food and water just in case. And above all I sure hope every HUB has assistants there with PROPER ID PHOTO BADGES. This is the very least GCS could do to insure the safety of the kids.

I thought a few years ago that sub pay was tied to teacher's raises by the legislature. We got small raises for a few years and then they stopped. I know it wouldn't amount to much but it would help. A thank you goes a long way too.

Barbara Ann said:

Another sub,

Just saw one of my "kids" in Target tonight (what a zoo day before school) but lots of kids out there all excited about school. That is the best thank you ever, a hug from the kids you sub.

You kind of give up expecting one from GCS.

Actions speak louder than words. And if what they think of us is determined by what we get pays, does that tell you anything?

Barbara Ann said:

Oops! I meant to say "what we get paid" not "we get pays" just in a HURRY or could I say the N & R retyped my blog and didn't catch it? (and I did not do it)

Just seen the 10.00 pm news. Forsyth Co. think they will need a whooping 600.000 dollar extra for fuel.
I hope the school board considers this sort of things when looking at redistricting.
Its much better to spend more on teachers/subs and assistants then fuel.

Barbara Ann said:

HPMom,

I saw that tonight and thought the very same thing. I also thought they said they use over 1 million gallons of gas.

What is scary to me are the mega buses with a lot more kids. It may save on trips. But who is watching the kids while the bus driver drives? They also showed a clip on a camera mounted on a train to show to school bus drivers with regard to safety. What good will that do if the bus is so noisy and they can't hear the train coming or concentrate?

Now that funds are short and TAs have been cut, slim chance of getting assistants on the buses. A few months ago bus drivers in Winston were lobbying for these. If they can't afford helpers on the bus, I think cameras would be a big help to sort out the trouble makers and have it documented.

Maybe after all the funds come in for the two-way radios, they can start a new campaign for cameras on our buses.

The board meeting was interesting tonight.
High Point was discussed a lot.
Darlene and Anita really put the pressure on about the plan being unfair and why was it not being done in the reat of Gso. Hats off to Kris Cooke too! She is obviously listening to people.
You can say the opposite about Susan, Dot and Walter. Dot only hears the people that are happy with the plan. Please E-mail her again all those who are not happy!! Do it!
There was also a lot of talk about FRL being used as a method of reassignment. You can here the egg shells cracking as they talk about it?

Have they reassigned my son to Central illegally?

Frankly, it smells.

Can anyone tell me how many parents/children appealed their lottery assignments and how many were denied or allowed to change schools?

Any update on this? This certainly would NOT improve the popularity of the school board & Terry Grier with the public and would create a panic among the many working parents with children in GCS.

Guilford County School Board considering shortening school week
The American way of life is under economic assault, and the gas lines are quickly becoming the front lines. The fuel crisis may force the Piedmont's largest school system to shorten the school week, and eliminate after school activities. The Guilford County School Board held an emergency meeting Thursday afternoon to discuss ways the district can cut back on using fuel. The Board of Education is considering making school weeks four days long instead of five. Class could run longer by an hour to an hour and a half each day, or days could be tacked on at the end of the school year. Another idea is canceling some or all after-school activities, especially the ones requiring school bus transportation. One idea that members say is unpopular, but may be a must, is raising the temperature in school classrooms to 80 degrees. If this happens it could last for a few weeks. No final decisions has been made.

Jtownmom,

I've asked for the assignment/appeals data several times. I was given some data, but it did not include the HP plan students. I'll keep asking for it.
