Our mistake

An advertising insert written by Terry Grier distributed in Friday's News & Record contained numerous grammatical and typographical errors. However, neither Dr. Grier nor GCS staff members made these mistakes - the News & Record did.

John Robinson explains the situation here:

Is the person from the advertising department a graduate of Guilford County Schools?

Cheez4your whine said:

Probably not. Most GC grads leave on the first thing smoking to evade the narrow minded people who appear to populate this community.

I always wondered who writes the speeches that Bruce Davis reads, now I know.

Looks like a chapter can now be added to the N&R's journalism seminars about being sure to hit the spell check.

The N&R is fast to apologize and has sincerely tried to make it right. Contrast that with the Guilford County Board of Education (Not staff) that has never apologized for anything and has never admitted that they made a mistake.

In the hub-bub created over the mistakes and problems in the letter, everyone is overlooking the serious ethical issues with this matter. What right is given to Terry Grier to use the public school system and the children in it to enable and support a private for-profit enterprise? This "partnership" is another breach of professional ethics by Terry Grier. Justifying this marketing ploy by saying that $20 goes to the school system is a decoy. Terry Grier is acting as a marketing agent of the car dealership that is hoping to sell some expensive cars to parents. This is just one more in a long line of Terry Grier outside activities. Does anyone remember the ethical issues revealed last year when he was paid to attend a business marketing meeting of school vendors at a plosh resort? Everyone take a closer look at this. Why do we allow Terry Grier to wheel and deal with private business, using the school system as a stepping stone? As usual, this is all justified because "it's for the children", when the truth is it's all about Terry Grier.

I would ask why the News-Record doesn't investigate outside activities such as this by Terry Grier, then I realize that they are in partnership with him, so they have no interest in investigations. It's pretty hard to be an investigative journalist organization when you are in league with the parties that your readership expects you to be investigating and reporting upon.

If there was ever a question about the driving force behind the N&R, it was cleared up for us today. The N&R needs to renamed to the "News According to Grier".

In today's paper:

Check out Page A2 and you'll see an apology to Grier regarding the leter.

Page A4 contains a half page ad containing the Grier letter (corrected).

Page A8 contains a letter from Grier himself explaining that the letter he wrote didn't contain the errors.

Page B2 contains an entire article written by Bruce apologizing profusely for the error in the letter.

I don't think 9/11 received this much coverage the day after.

Cheers!

I'm with you Ian. I can't believe the "crawfishin'" (a Louisiana expression related to the way the mud bug walks backwards) that the N & R is doing re: some typos. If Grier was held to 1/100th of this standard, he would have been gone long ago.

I can't wait until they roll out the next program. We will hear "It may not be a Cadillac, but it will be a Kia!". Thus far, a "Yugo" program would be an improvement!

Tim,

"Crawfishin" could become the latest dance craze, could be the catalyst for our "WORLD CLASS DANCE PROGRAM" at South West High.

Back to a more serious note. I have returned from my mission at the coast to interview an Investigator to look into some past allegations of some of our School Administration.

Deem this mission a success. The wheels are in motion for our P.I. to begin immediately.

Hopefully in the near future we will be given proof of allegations against a certain administrator that will send him running for higher ground.

Let it be Known in Guilford County that the fight against the CROOKED,SELF CENTERED, LOW LIFE, MONEY HUNGRY ADMINISTRATOR will never die!!!!!!!!!!!!

I received a card in the mail today regarding my daughter's teacher assignment. The address label reads "TO THE PARENT/GURADIAN OF:"

Can I assume that this typo is not the fault of GCS but that the postal service somehow is to blame?
