Running on empty?

The 2005-06 school year starts next week and if you need some tips on what to send for lunch, you might want to check out an upcoming seminar.

Ellen Briggs, author of "Are Your Kids Running on Empty?", will be at the Earth Fare in Greensboro on September 15. She'll have two one-hour seminars on childhood nutrition: one at noon and another at 3 p.m.

God forbid. Don't bring peanut butter, peanut products, anything with peanut dust on it. The schools might get sued. If you do make sure it is in a triple locked bag with a warning label and you bring some cloth masks for others to wear who might be allergic.

Don't bring wheat products; some kids are allergic to wheat.

Don't bring wheat bread with mold on it; some kids are allergic to mold.

Don't bring chocolate (for real; it makes kids hyper) and it really could have peanut products in it.

All kidding aside, food allergies are a serious matter. Responsible parents tell the teachers and staff about their kids food allergies and what snacks they cannot have. Some children carry epipins and show the teachers how to use them.

I don't think every child in the entire school can be expected not to bring a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. It is very nutricious and has been known to help depression.

This could actually help a depressed child when he fails his math or reading tests, has just been on a super long bus ride across town, is being bullied, the dog ate his homework, or just having a plain old bad day.

Yep, one scoop on a sandwich can do wonders.

Also never, never give peanut butter to todlers (for real). It sticks to the roof of their mouth and they can choke (need to dilute with milk). Do not give grapes unless cut in half or whole peanuts or hot dogs (yuk) unless they are cut in very small pieces.

Now we have covered some potential choking hazards too.

Oh, and no balloons. Most definitely a choking hazard when deflated.

Make sure you know what to do if a child is choking.

Now back to the great nutritious foods they can bring and won't choke on.

Speaking of running on empty... the N&R gets a failing grade again today.

NO WHERE does any reporter think it press-worthy enough to mention that Jamestown schools just got screwed again.

The County Commissioners approved Grier's request to shift around the bond money to rob Ragsdale of it's much needed expansion project.

Did Grier phone up again last night and tell you all what to print again today?

Why don't you just change the name of the paper to the "News & Grier".

Cancelled,

Perhaps you cancelled your subscription too early, otherwise you would have read stories in the N&R a month ago that money would be used from these projects to pay for others.

Here's what I posted on another strand at the Chalkboard in response to a post about the at that time upcoming commissioners' meeting:

You probably will see more money moved around in the bond projects.

At its July 12 meeting, the school board voted to prioritize the 28 projects in the $300 million construction bond, intending to use money from lower-priority projects to pay for others because bids were starting to come in over budget.

From the N&R archives:

"The Guilford Board of Education created a priority list Tuesday in case money runs out before all 28 projects can be completed.

Superintendent Terry Grier told the board that if bids continue to come in too high or additional funding can not be found, the district will have to delay about $30 million in projects.

The approved list puts a new Jamestown Middle School, renovations at Ragsdale High and work at Guilford Middle School below the cut off point for available funding under the revised cost projections.

If Jamestown is delayed, the district could end up using Allen Jay Middle to handle overflow, Grier said.

Allen Jay would be available because it will be replaced by a new Southern Middle School, which is higher on the priority list.

Grier warned board members in March that soaring construction costs could
affect upcoming projects."

Jennifer,

Just because you wrote about it a month ago, and Grier told you the requests would be coming in some secret meeting, doesn't mean it's written in blood.

Money can't be shifted until the County Commissioners okay the shift. And yea, they did last night. So how would reading your wonderfully written articles a month ago tell me the proceedings from LAST NIGHT? I had to go the High Point Enterprise to hear how the vote went.

Are you saying that you knew back when you wrote about this topic a month ago that you could foretell the vote of the commissioners on Aug. 18th??? Where do you get these physic abilities?

It's ESPECIALLY poor journalism when you write about a topic and then do not follow up on it. So in essence, I cancelled in the nick of time. If I want to waste any more money, it won't be on the N&R, it'll be my tax dollars wrapped up in a special package called a bond.

Instead of trying, and failing, to insult your readers who would just like to stay up to date with the most recent news, you could possibly do a story about lying to voters. Yea, that would be a great story. Tell about how the school board pushes for a bond for certain projects, gets the votes of that community and then takes that money and runs! That should be illegal.

Maybe a question for Grier at the newly publicized secret meeting is how can he sleep at night knowing that he just screwed Jamestown AGAIN yet his paycheck gets bigger and bigger! Maybe he could return that mad money and begin to pay back the Ragsdale families that he just robbed.

gsomagpie has directed a personal insult against a poster on this blog (cancelled). I thought we were to disagree with opinions, but not attack people.

I think this was done in poor taste and you should reprimand the poster.

Cheers!

Ian,

If we had to reprimand everyone who baited, insulted or personally attacked someone else on the Chalkboard, we'd spend a lot of time reprimanding folks. Just look through the last few posts and you'll see what I mean.

Last time Bruce asked everyone to play nice and be civil, well, some folks took exception to that.

In a perfect world, adults would act like adults. Unfortunately, Ian, this is not a perfect world.

In the case of really vulgar material, we delete the posts. We usually can't send an e-mail to the poster to tell them why we deleted their comment because the vast majority are anonymous and provide fake e-mails.

So, I can make a plea here for everyone to play nice, but I know it will fall on deaf ears for many.

I'd like to take this time to say thank you to those who do manage to keep the discourse civil even though they may be angry and upset about a situation.
