Why I hadn’t heard of a Red Sea saga like this since Dot told me the story of how she was chased into the ocean and a giant path opened up with water on both sides. She kept running and eventually made it to Georgia, met up with some farmers and they later discovered High Point, NC. That woman can drone on and on and she is impossible to deal with since we have moved these meetings up to 5:30 in the afternoon and I still have a hangover.

What is the deal with you people in red? As best I can tell he Wolfpack doesn’t play until Saturday and Andrews doesn't have their homecoming this Friday. Making comments that “at least we have a representative who listens to us.” I am getting tired of that woman on the end table setting a bad example for all of us. What is her name anyway? She drives me crazy, constantly babbling about how teaching the children should come first.

Why couldn’t you people from NW keep it in the family? I saw one guy in the crowd that I am certain was a part of that crowd from Southwest. They’re in my district and I can’t stand any of them. That’s why I moved all of their kids to Central where I can keep an eye on them. Well OK you caught me, we needed those kids so we can hopefully get these test scores up at Central.

That’s one of the reasons we had to hire Stat-boy to constantly put a spin on things. It’s the best $122M we ever spent on anything. I think he did great, don’t you? That pile of graphs was a bit much though. All of those lines were starting to blur together. But, if he says the scores are projected to improve who are we to argue?

Ugh again with the test scores and producing positive results. I need a drink.

As far as solving the problem, I think you little cry-babies need to be dealt with and fast. Don't you know that your children are the County's children; we are here to take care of you.

That is why we are doing a double-secret feasability study on county-wide busing beginning at the K-level. I am sooooo tired of hearing about neighborhood schools we'll just do away with them regardless of the outcome of the study.

And who in the world made a request for a map with attendance zones based on the proximity to each school. The only reason I want to see this map is so I can figure out where certain people live. The first person I want to find is that guy who was wearing the Twizzlers shirt the other night, I think he was laughing at me.

What are you talking about, General?

A few items that are of concern for this discussion board:

1) Why do we maintain a SCALE school in Greensboro that only has three students, of which one is from High Point, and two principals? Why do we need to spend $$$$ to open a school in High Point, if there is only one student that would be currently attending?

2) Why did Marty Sykes, Kris Cooke, Susan Mendenhall, and Nancy Routh vote against having redistricting maps prepared to see what effect sending students to their closest school would have? Why are these board members in such a big hurry to set redistricing lines by January 2006, when these new lines wouldn't take effect until the new schools are open in more than one year? What don't they want everyone to see?

3) What did Peggy Thompson, Chief Academic Officer, mean when she said that SCALE children are fragile and can't spend that much time on a bus? I don't understand how these students are so much more fragile than regular students that ride school buses for over two hours each day to school and back.

4) What is Dot Kearns' objection to having the SCALE school across the street from Central and why is she uncomfortable with that idea? Who is she concerned about being adversely affected by that arrangement? Susan Mendenhall says that would be a problem because the students would mingle. Why is that a problem and for whom?

A lot of questions here that have been coincerning me. Perhaps, someone has some insights into them.

It was disappointing to me to learn that GCS doesn't already have a neighborhood map showing children's theoretical assignment to their closest/2nd closest school.

This should be the gold standard with which any other proposed assignment should be compared.

I do believe that the results will provide many surprises and I believe those who voted against the proposal have the most to lose.

Let's not forget - the following seats will be contested in the November 2006 election: Alan Duncan, Marti Sykes, and Susan Mendenhall.

I can't help you on all your questions, but the first one I think I can.

SCALE school has a population that fluctuates greatly. It depends how many students are long-term suspended at any given time that choose to go to SCALE to continue their education. At the beginning of the year, the students who are there typically are the ones finishing up their time from last year. So there very well could only be a handful of kids at SCALE right now. But that number usually grows larger closer to mid-year.

I believe Peggy Thompson said they served 200 plus students last year, over the course of the year, and that 60 percent of the students were from High Point. (I'm going on memory here, so please don't take these #s as Gospel.)

Hope that helps explain the low numbers a bit.

Ms. Thompson did say 60% were from High Point, but she later corrected her numbers and said 40% were from the High Point area.

1. On SCALES, I thought I heard similar numbers based on what Jennifer said. Here is the background on SCALES to the best of my knowledge.
SCALES used to be in High Point spread out in trailers. It was moved to Greensboro so kids could be in one location. These kids didn't get there until late in the day, so it really did not allow for much school time. Plus they were put on a very long bus ride.

Many parents in High Point have been writing about the needs for an Alternative School for High Point students for quite some time now. (See the suspension rates for the three HP high schools. Remember they increased after the "Choice" Plan was put in place.) If the kids are just suspended to the streets, what purpose would this serve? It could be a burden on the community's tax dollars sooner or later. Wouldn't it be best to educate children in an alternative setting rather then have them disrupt a class or be out on the streets with no supervision?

2. On the redistricting vote, some interesting questions. What I question is why Marti kept wanting to focus on Northwest area now. The proposed maps would possibly be ready by Jan. 06 and the new high school will take several years to build. Even Darlene made the motion, at first, to scrap the upcoming forums in light of the new countywide proposal coming up. I guess the proposals seemed like a moot point after the neighborhood countywide proposal.

The huge map that Eric is working on was not to "set" the lines. It was a "proposed map" like the others to see what it would look like. This is why Amos seconded it "to see how it would look".

Kris also inquired if they could have another proposal later and bring Ragsdale into the mix. She got an affirmative on that. So there still may be "more proposals". It took several years the last time when it was countywide so I am sure this will take some time too. From what I understood this was just a starting point.

3. Great question about why any children should be on a long bus ride? My sentiments exactly.

4. Interesting comments by both Dot and Susan. As for the mingling part, these kids are pulled out of the tradtional classroom and separated for various reasons. Now I believe it was Nancy R who said that the kids come at a different time than regular school hours. Also from what I know it is still across the street, so there could be fences or some boundaries put up to separate the two campuses. Even in elementary school, kids who have special needs and may have behavioral issues are kept in a separate class and have one on ones escort them to their specials like music and art. There does need to be a separation because that is why they are in SCALES in the first place.

Okay everyone, just returned from the first forum, my guess was about 30 or so people spoke. Overwhelmingly the most requested consideration was neighborhood schools-send us to the school closest to our house. That came from black parents and white parents, from city parents, county parents, from dads and moms... use common sense and do the right thing! Transportation costs were topic for many, communities were a popular topic.. all things that the HP area has brought up. The crowd was mostly NE parents, some Eastern (they live 2 miles from Page, travel 12 miles to Eastern), a few from NW- mostly our topic was relief from overcrowding.

Just that you might like to know. When the maps that Anita spoke about come out, that will be the time for the entire county to come forward and demand community schools-- all people, all colors, all socio-economic backgrounds. That will the only chance a common sense plan might have.

Thanks for the update. Like you said most parents, whether you are black or white or whatever, want community/neighborhood schools. I think the school board has no idea how to educate children. They only know how to play shell games. It comes down to fixing the problems and educating ALL children no matter where they go to school and this school board and Superintendent don't know how to do that.

The school board is like a dysfuntional corporation. When a company gets in trouble and is failing, it's first action is to reorganize. Reorganization just moves the employees around and the is an assumption that the only problem was how people were deployed. When that doesn't work after a few years and doesn't solve the problems, it reorganizes again. Constant confusion is the order of the day.

School boards are the same. When faced with problems it doesn't know how to solve (low achievement and graduation rates), it shuffles the students around; it's known as redistricting. Things are confused for awhile and no one really knows what the results are, and they can say that the new program needs to be given time to work before it is evaluated. When things start to settle, and it can be seen what and where the problems are, they reshuffle (redistrict) again. This can go on for years; you never really solve the problems because there is too much confusion. As long as the board and administration are allowed to do that, they will never solve the problems. Oh, and there will always be a hue and cry that more money would really solve the problem. The only problem is no one knows what problems need to be solved.

All BOE members were present, Dr. Grier and Eric. Eric did answer a few questions to certain people about the lines (which streets were/weren't included)- the board did not answer many questions, very casual atmosphere. The public did point out their locations on a map to many BOE members, so they would know where the talkers lived. Small maps were given, large maps were available to look at- not sure when any changes might happen, not before all three meetings for sure.
