Closed for repairs

Three middle schools will be without gyms for a few months due to repairs.

The three schools, Eastern, Hairston and Kernodle, are the newest middle schools in the district and were built according to the same set of blueprints. But architects say the supports that hold up the gym roofs may not be strong enough to withstand heavy winds or snow.

We will be following up on this story, including finding out how much these repairs will cost.

Bruce,

Does this mean that another school that has been placed at the bottom of the priority list for bond money just got bumped?

I am sure they will do just fine for awhile with the auxiliary gyms. For years, when we first moved here Florence Elementary had PE, Art-on-a-Cart, and Music-on-a-Cart in what was always the "gym/combo multi-purpose stage room. You could learn to draw, hear Mozart and the sweet sound of basketballs bouncing (and just hope they didn't knock over the temparary walls) while you painted, and all at one time - the original definition of "multi-tasking". Then finally we had Art and Music in Trailers hidden from the road. The specialty teachers were glad to have a "room" even if the carpet was torn and the HVAC didn't work. (That trailer now a storage facility.)

As you ride past and now see all the trailers that for years where hidden from the tiny main building, you can see why teachers, students and parents are anxiously awaiting their new facility.

For years many schools have "made-do" with what they had.

Florence is truly an example of what makes a school great: teachers, staff, parents, and the kids.

off subject, but some interesting posts on the "construction budget blues" strand.
a teacher posted that she and fellow teachers had been told to no longer give zeros to students. in fact, no grades less than 60 were to be given beginning spring semester - regardless of work done or not done by students.

the board discussed this grading scale revision last year and did not support it.

"terry grier" (goes back to his gcs email address) responded to this individual's post and printed, he has "not discussed the grading proposals you outline in your email with ANYONE..". he then proceeded to blame the teachers for students who choose not to perform and receive poor grades. later, he changed subjects to the gcs drop out rate for the balance of his post

Good question, JMO.

The answer is no, this won't affect any more bond projects because the repairs won't be paid for out of bond money. The repairs will have to be paid for out of the district's regular annual budget.

I agree with Bruce, this would be capital improvement budget.. wonder how this passed inspection?

Can the blame be passed on down the line to the original architects/reviewers?

Interesting Rhino today on their weekly school article. They mention about certain GCS employees leaving and coincidently the timing of the Northern bid coming is so high.

Talking about overkill, I cannot believe that they would suspend all activity in the 3 gyms. The experts did not say it would fall down on a clear day. They said that it might not hold with high winds or deep snow. You don't have to worry about snow, the schools don't open it there is any snow, much less heavy snow. High winds, 60 mph or more may cause a problem. Before each class, why not let the teacher check for high winds and if none is present or forcast, the teacher should be able to hold activities in the Gym. I want the schools to teach no only book sense but common sense. If we don't do better than this, the next bond issue may not pass.

Since there's no strand for the story in today's paper regarding the 15 Schools celebrating success yesterday, I will post here.

Did anyone else notice that Ferndale was recognized as one of these 15 success stories in Guilford County? Yes, Ferndale - that would be the same school that has missed AYP 3 years in a row.

The 2 top students from each school was able to recognize his/her favorite teacher. The unusual thing is that the student from Ferndale's best ever teacher is now at Grimsley!!!

Why, if Ferndale is struggling so, would one of the best teachers now be at Grimsley???

quest,

Great question. I thought I did read the story on this but newspaper in recycle. Bruce?? can you post?

Maybe I read it in the HPE.

Kris,

Thank you!

Quest, I agree with your comment. Kris was a great tonight. Darlene too!
On the contrary Susan was calculating and malicious.
I have been talking with some friends and we are going to complain officially against Susan and Dot.
We will demand a public investigation!

The complaint will be in reference to the comments at the Penn Griffin forum by several politicians to Susan and Dot that they HAVE to continue support of the IT plan because as one of them said “we looked after your back now you look after ours”. There were also more comments that we have noted.

I have a five witness’s already, anymore up for it?

There is clearly a conflict with the code of Ethics as stated below:
Note: I have cut out most of the parts and have only left the points that we think (at the moment) they are in conflict with.

GUILFORD COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION CODE OF ETHICS.. BHB

As a member of the Guilford County Board of Education, I will work to improve public education, and to that end I will strive to:
2. Act with honesty, fairness, integrity and discretion in all relationships.
16. Act to represent the citizens of the entire district which supersedes any
conflicting loyalty a member may have to other advocacy or interest groups, or to an area from which the member may be elected.
Anyone else have an opinion? More possible evidence?

The politics flying in the room that night were EXTREMELY evident. You have many witnesses who heard the same thing you did. Special interests were very evident.

Clearly undeniable proof that there was a election votes for "choice plan" vote contract between NAACP and Ms.Kearns/ Mendenhall. The wife of the NAACP admitted it. Direct quote: "WE voted for you. You can't change your mind now" You can't have much more proof than that. I doubt if the NAACP will furnish an ethics panel with a signed document to this effect, therefore you have the most proof you can possibly have. You Go!!!, Reassigned!!!

Completely off the subject.

I went to the Grimsley/Page or Page/Grimsley (depending on your NEIGHBORHOOD) football game last night. Here are five things that really made an impression on me.

1. School pride- Both schools demonstrated good old fashioned pride in their NEIGHBORHOOD schools. You could sense the feeling of ownership both sides felt for THEIR school.

2. Grimsley's side (where I stood) was 98% white people. Not much integration happening there.

3. At the end of the game when the winning side could storm the field, the Grimsley student section did NOT enthusiastically rush their team but rather rushed the PAGE sidelines to taunt their players. The N&R reported "When the last seconds ticked off the clock, Whirlie's fans poured onto the field, mobbing the Grimsley players in celebration". The Grimsley team was actually huddled in the far endzone 50 - 80 yards from the fans! It is amazing to me that a reporter can be there and make a statement that's a bold face lie! More of the same from the N&R ...... why print the facts when their own interpretation "fits the story" better! (Interesting to note that soon after this post this AM on another strand, the link to the game from this mornings sports edition is no longer available!)

4. Good game to watch.

5, Each team's captains, the principals of both schools and someone from the FCA (Fellowship of Christian Atheletes)were represented at the "coin toss". Good to see God hasn't been completely kicked out of the schools!

Regarding ethics witnesses - yes I was there, if you need me I will support, you need legal fees and have credible lawyer, I will support.

The blatant political pandering and intimidation show that the cost of enlisting special interest is nothing more than having your chain jerked good if you even show remote disagreement. Common sense shows the cost and sorrows inficted by an ill planned idea dictate another solution. The solution is simple - target the schools needing most help with best resources. Mr. Grier brought in a nationaly recognized Principal who recieved no support and he left shortly. Blame who you will, but help is required, the High Point Shuffle does not address the academnic needs of these kids who's best chance in life is education. College offers freedom to them, yet it is denied because special interests are not interested in a solution that helps kids, just their cause. These kids deserve a chance at the American dream and special interest groups and politicians should step out of the way with thier agendas and allow good workable, common sense solutions a chane to enter the discussion. The status quo prior to the Choice plan was unnacceptable, bu instead of fixing those schools with problems, helping them meet or exceed state SAT scores and showing these kids they have a chance, we communicate inferiority and inability. Bring back discipline to the classroom, bring back the American "can do" attitude to our kids and stand back while they do what kids can do in a proper educational environment. Let common sense become common again!
