Enrollment rising

Over at Hogg's Blog, JWG asked about 10-day enrollment figures by school.

Two weeks ago we reported that enrollment had risen by about 1,600 students. I recently received the school-by-school breakout. You can can see where your school stands here.

I can't find last year's Excel sheet on enrollment. I just have a hard copy. If I get a chance, I'll create a file so you can compare the past two years at least.

But here's a few examples, looking at areas of high growth, where the construction bond money is being focused, where redistricting is being explored:

Northwest High: Increased from 2,105 to 2,279
Northeast High: Increased from 1,167 to 1,212
Colfax Elementary: Increased from 898 to 930
Summerfield Elementary: Increased from 744 to 746
Alamance Elementary: Decreased from 856 to 850
Southwest High: Increased from 1,211 to 1,308
Andrews High: Decreased from 1,212 to 1,079
High Point Central: Decreased from 1,426 to 1,347
Oak View Elementary: Increased from 516 to 614
Ragsdale High: Increased from 1,337 to 1,477

I just finished looking at the " Ten Day Enrollment Figures " released by the County.

For 2 Years now I have been hearing of the concern for Diversity in the High Schools in High Point.

After looking at these figures , I could not help but notice a few numbers that really stood out.

Example :

Dudley.....1 % White and 99 % Minority.

Smith .....7 % White and 93 % Minority.

Northwest..86 % White and 14 % Minority.

Southeast..76 % White and 24 % Minority.

What is the deal with this ????????????

School Board members PLEASE RESPOND........

Are the Citizens in High Point held to a different standard in this merged system that we are all a part of??????

Are the Whites Different in High Point than the rest of the county ???????

Are the High Point Minorities different than those in the rest of the county???????????

mr. grier, could you PLEASE RESPOND and explain to me why the whole county is not involved in some form of school assignment program such as the "Socialist Choice Plan of High Point".

dot kearns,,,,Does your "Bleeding Heart" not have compassion for the rest of the helpless students of Guilford County ??????? How can they possibly have a good education with such lack of Diversity??????????

Guilford County Should Beware of the Socialist Direction in which several of our Board Members are directing our schools!!!!!!!!

I'm a little confused by some of these numbers, especially as it relates to the three High Point schools. In early January 2004, the school board advanced two primary goals of the choice plan, 1) improved diversity, and 2) better utilization of the three schools.

I understand the desire on part of the school board to improve diversity in the three High Point schools, but the Puzzled General has a good point; why only High Point? There doesn't seem to be a rush to diversity occurring in the other county schools with 1% white at Dudley and 7% white at Smith. This doesn't seem very diverse to me. Do you think that different attendance criteria is being used for those schools than for the High Point schools? Just curious what the board's thoughts on this might be. Perhaps, a member of the board might see this and want to comment?

I also noted that the enrollment at Southwest High increased from 2004 to 2005, and the enrollment at Andrews and Central decreased during the same time period. So, how is the choice plan acheiving the stated goal of relieving overcrowding at Southwest and better utilization of schools? Just looking at the numbers here, it would seem to indicate that a certain number of Southwest students are being swapped to Andrews or Central, while much larger numbers are being sent to Southwest in exchange. What's that about?

Coupled with the declining academic achievement at all three schools, and the two primary goals of the board for the plan not being accomplished, then choice plan has been a catastrophe of Category 5 size. Heck, the state has had to send in the Catastrophe Team to Andrews to begin reviving it. How long must the people of High Point endure this pain and misery for the glory of Dot Kearns and Susan Mendenhall? Who's benefiting or profiting from this plan, and why are Dot and Susan hanging onto it for dear life?

Buckmtn said:

Actually the Central decrease is greater than presented if you consider that 128 kids from the 27265 zip code are abducted on a daily basis and held there against their will.

It should be 129, but my daughter escaped the Wrath of Khan, otherwise known as Dot Kearns and fortunately she is at one of the private schools closeby.

One subject that is on the rise at Southwest is violence and after 1 month the reason is obvious. Just last week the Barrow Road address was in the police section of the N&R again.

What would be interesting to know is whether the students were part of the conventional Southwest "feeder system of middle schools" or were these juvenile delinquents lotteried in from other parts of High Point.

What's that? You don't like your child being referred to as a juvenile delinquent? Then I suggest you discipline this kid.

McGruff, It's funny that you bring this topic up.

Just this morning, my sons first period class was cut in half due to the fact that his teacher had to aid in the controlling of a small scuffle between about 12 students, most of which arrived at Southwest via Dot Kearns "Socialist Assignment Program".

By the Way, has everyone seen the new cowboy mascot??????? It looks like a "Lil Gangsta" on a Horse.

News Flash...Be on the look out for mr. griers' new instructional book, "How to F**k up a Successful High School in only a Couple of Years".

Stormy said:

General,

What's that new mascot all about? Who's idea was it, and who approved it? The school board adopted a policy last year that said this in part "All mascots ....shall assure respect for cultural differences, values, and attitudes of all peoples." Does this new mascot assure respect for cultural differences, values, and attitudes of ALL people? If not, file a complaint with the school board that Southwest is in violation of this policy. What you described sure doesn't sound like a cowboy, at least the ones with which I am familiar, growing up in the real Southwest.

Joe,

Where are you?

What is your take now on the cost of all this busing if gasoline goes to $5.00 a gallon after Hurricane Rita lands in the gulf.

Garth, how would $5.00 a gallon gas change the original projections that you ran on your software in winter 2004?

Buckmtn said:

Stormy, maybe its a cowboy similar to the one from the Village People.

Its a diversity tang, u wouldn't unner stand.

Buckmtn said:

Hey I saw the number in the paper today and I'll still stick by my comments. There is no way of telling how many kids picked Central first feeling there was no way they would ever get into Southwest. I feel that there are atleast 2 busloads of kids every day going to a school they do not want to be at.

As far as those fortunate to get Southwest on appeal, Grier always needs a little politcal fodder in his arsenal, that's all this is. Like McGruff says above, I don't know how many of these kids feel fortunate though, if the hooligans are being bused into Southwest to start trouble.

Oh yeah, you located my daughter, she's one of the 12.

If anybody has a picture of this new mascot, I'd love to see it. You don't even have to provide your name - just fax it to my attention at 373-7382.

Jennifer,

This is very useful info - thank you. Any way to get free/reduced lunch %s for the schools?

amy said:

Jennifer,

One more ? - when are school report cards for 2004/2005 going to be available on GCS website?

jennifer fernandez said:

Amy,

The FRL data won't be ready until October. I asked for that this week. They're still waiting to finalize numbers. Once I get that I will post it on the Chalkboard.

The 2004-05 report cards get released in October as well. Here is the
link.

The 12 students going to private school are just high schoolers. I personally know of many more in grades 5 through 8 who have bailed out of this mess in advance. Oh yeah, that doesn't count the people I know who have moved to Ragsdale, Western Guilford, and Northwest. It seems the enrollment numbers are bearing this out.

jwg said:

Now that the enrollment figures are out, will report enrollment as a percentage of capacity?
