High School redistricting maps
I know a lot of you would like to see the proposed county-wide redistricting maps. Here is the first map, which is for the high schools.
School board member Anita Sharpe asked for these maps. They attempt to place students at the closest school. Elementary and middle school maps will be presented in a couple of weeks.

This is just a map showing closest school "as the crow flies" attendance without regard to existing or proposed attendance lines?
Posted on October 28, 2005 11:07 AM
The proposed new lines are in thick green. The LARGE numbers show only the numbers of children that live close to the schools but do not reflect the green lines. Those lines are adjusted to relect school capacity etc. The numbers for the green lines were only given verbally by erik.
From what I remember some interesting numbers were that NW and SW would not be over capacity.
Erik also stated number of coloured vs non coloured and FRL numbers.
In the most part these stayed they same and even improved diversity in some schools.
SW however would have lower numbers and Central higher. Andrews was roughly the same.
That will probably kill it. I mean Susan and Dot must be working on a master plan to kill it as I write!

Why won't Grier, Susan and Dot and any others that oppose this map and the concept of attending the closest school just admit one thing--- schools need white people to be successful! They keep implying it over and over again but won't actually come out and just say "Central and Andrews need white kids from Southwest in order to be successful."
Sometimes they call it socioeconomic integration. Sometimes they call it FRL vs non-FRL. Either way, at some point in every meeting somebody will admit that they are referring to race and that some schools have too many white kids while others have too few.
Deena, Amos and Walter sit back and let this go on at every meeting. Don't they hear it? I hear it loud and clear!
Just once, I want to hear Dot say, "We just have too many black kids at Central and we need to trade them for some white kids." It won't shock anybody. We all know what you want.
JUST ADMIT IT!

Another Day goes by and More Crime is committed in High Point High Schools.
Bruce, could someone from your newspaper please investigate as to why these crimes are not being released to the public??????????
The Safety of our children is at stake.
Grier, Eventually your past will catch up with you!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure which crimes you are talking about, General, but if you or someone else can give us some specifics, we'd be glad to check it out. You can either reply here, call me at 373-7078 or e-mail me directly.

OHHHHHHH LORD,
There was a Tragic Accident on Southwest School Rd. yesterday.
Seems that two WITCHES ran into Power Poles while flying at an altitude of about Ten ft.
The bodies have not been positively identified other than one Witch had "MENDENHALL" printed on her shirt and the other Bit,,, I mean WITCH, had a shirt labeled as ,,,, "DOT KEARNS".
Posted on October 28, 2005 4:07 PM
General, I saw that too. Ride by again. Now Dot has a mourner, but only one.
Yesterday, there was a vodka bottle in Susan's hand. It must have finally dropped after the rigamortis set in.
Sad, very sad.
Posted on October 28, 2005 4:22 PM
Bruce, if we took a picture would you post it on your blog?
Posted on October 28, 2005 4:24 PM
Bruce,
1. Call Andrews and Southwest and ask the
Principals if any crimes have taken place
this week. If they say no, go to step 2.
2. Call High Point Police Dept. and ask for a
Crime report for the High Schools.
If you come up empty from these sources, then griers' "Plan of Silence" is working.
Crimes have been committed,,,, a good Investigative Reporter should have no Problem getting to the bottom of this matter,,,,, while a reporter who has been bought by grier may very well wish to overlook the TRUTH!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted on October 28, 2005 4:25 PM
You got me, General. Can't believe I fell for that one. Very funny.
Yeah, I saw the "carnage" on Southwest School Road, too. One question: who is the ghoul with the GTGOH sign supposed to be?
And, sure, if someone wants to send me a photo, I'll be glad to post it here. I'm writing a short note about it for Monday's paper, which I'm sure you guys will appreciate.
Posted on October 28, 2005 4:57 PM
The ghoul's mask is missing. Ride by again and you can see who was under it.
Posted on October 28, 2005 10:21 PM
Bruce,
Although the Halloween decorations are amusing , what the General is trying to expose is not. He has been telling you (not so) subtly to simply look into the police reports generated from the schools in the past couple of weeks.
Major problems have been occurring and flying under the radar (like our friendly witches)! A simple inquiry and a little follow up will lead you to a story. If you wait for us to write it, it'll be like the world series and CMS's Lottery Plan demise ...... OLD NEWS.
A little work by investigating police responses using GCS high school addresses will lead you to your story .... for the heck of it, why don't you start with SW then Andrews. ,,,, just an idea

R.I.P.
What was under the mask is even scarier than the mask itself!!!!

If you are against the "IT" plan VOTE Steve Wood!
Posted on October 29, 2005 10:24 AM
By the way, here's some info on a candidate that would truely represent our views in North HP, Jamestown and "outside of Greensboro" but never HP (i.e. Emorywood)!

A reply to a nasty blog by Emerywood's correspondent Doug Clark
He called Steve a 'mystery man'? I had breakfast with
the 'mystery man' this morning!!!
Believe me, I have followed Steve's record of public service for years, and
it is no mystery why he has served us so long and so well in public office.
Steve Wood is solid, true-blue, through and through
for me and you, the common people. Not the
high falutin blueboods----and certainly not the
liberal media types
My guess----Doug Clark..is miffed that the voters have
elected Mr. Wood, to the NC House eight times,
over the editorial animadversions of the journeyman journalist.
Fact of the matter, Doug, you don't exactly hold the voters in very high
esteem, do you? I guess that is a collateral element of the media/elite
arrogance..." we know what is best for you more than you know for yourselves."
You were right about Mr. Wood being "plenty smart" though.
Plenty smart not to do an editorial interview with the NR
or the Enterprise. Those glowing editorial endorsements
of the incumbent are pro forma and knee-jerk.
Plenty smart to be an advocate for 'real school choice'
while serving in the Legislature, not some 'school chance'
lottery imposed by the GCS on High Point.
Plenty smart for opposing 'merger' of the High Point school
system in 1992. Rep. Wood reminded us all then, and now,
that it was penny wise and pound foolish for a city to give
up its own school system.
Plenty smart to be the first Republican Chairman of the House Education
Committee in over 100 years.
Plenty smart to use that post to support tuition tax credits,
vouchers, and lead the way to establishing charter schools
in North Carolina.
In fact, Phoenix Academy here in High Point is part of the legislative
legacy of Rep. Wood's leadership in education
for our state and our area. Mr. Wood is widely recognized as
the 'father of charter schools in North Carolina' by school
reformers.
Plenty smart to achieve one of the most conservative
voting records in the NC House during the last 25 years.
His awards and recognitions during his 16 years in the House ----the
longest term of service ever by any High Pointer-----include "Taxpayers Best
Friend", "Friend of the Family", and "Guardian of Small Business", to list just a
few.
Mr. Clark's column included some derogatory remarks about Steve
by fellow Republicans. Mr. Wood's Republican credentials
stack up pretty well, I think.
President Bush appointed Steve to the Selective
Service Commission in 2001, a post in which he continues to serve.
Steve is a former vice-chairman of the Guilford County Republican party.
Governor Jim Martin, GOP Governor, honored Steve by
awarding him the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest
civilian award presented by the Governor of North Carolina.
He was named Republican of the Year in North Carolina
in 2004 by the US House GOP Congressional Campaign Committee.
But Steve respects the fact that there are good people in
both the Republican and Democrat parties----as well as
Unaffiliated and third parties.
Plenty smart was Steve Wood when he garnered bi-partisan
support to be elected Speaker Pro Tem of the NC House
when the rest of the Republicans were fighting among
themselves.
The Mayor's race is non-partisan. Steve's record shows he knows how to work
within our two-party system to lead a
taxpayer-friendly,
citizen-centered City Hall, for all of us, Republicans and
Democrats, North and South High Point.
Steve's roots are 'deep' in High Point. A former professor at John Wesley
College, he moved here in l978, with his new wife, Starr. Their daughter is
an honor graduate of High Point University. (Just ask Dr. Corey about her
academic credentials!!)
A man of great faith, Dr. Wood is a former pastor of one of our city's
historic churches, Deep River Friends Meeting.
Steve's experience and leadership for us in the State House
would serve us well here in City Hall.
You've heard the old phrase, 'you can't fight City Hall'.
We won't have to fight City Hall with Steve Wood as our Mayor. He will be
there fighting in City Hall for us!!
We, the voters of High Point, will be plenty smart
if we go the polls ----either during early voting or on
election day, Tuesday, November 8----and elect Steve Wood
as our next Mayor of High Point. And, that's no
mystery, man!

After taking care of household chores and some errands I got a chance to watch some TV on this beautiful afternoon. What a contrast TV was to the naturally beautiful day.
Two disappointing things on TV.
The Tar Heels were up at half vs. Miami. A horible 3rd quarter proved to be too much to overcome.
I got tired of the miscues and flipped to the BOE meeting. More horror ( I guess it is the season!). Hence, the second disaster to observe.
The BOE meeting replayed from Thursday PM. MY (mis)representative actually stated that the discussion of redistricting was taking time away from "the Northern schools that really need attendance zones".
Susan, my question is "Why don't the kids in High Point need attendance zones?!"
There was also a lot of discussion around feeder patterns .....elementary-middle-high school. Grier chimed in at this point to say that in high school they weren't as important.
You know, high school kids don't need stability during the most chaotic, influential period of their lives!!! GIVE ME A BREAK !!!!!! We're so stupid we don't recognize self serving statements when we hear them?!
It seems to me that the only thing keeping the board from focusing on academics is this stupid experiment they refuse to give up in High Point. Few, if any, are challenging their assignments from 1999. Why does the BOE refuse to recognize this fact?
I need some fresh air. After listening to so much BS, you can begin to actually smell it!
Posted on October 29, 2005 4:53 PM
I have only been watching the board meetings now for the last few months but everytime I watch I can't believe what I see.
I will be kind now in saying that they might understand education but on practical things they have absolutely NO CLUE. As I watch I can't believe some of the comments.
Nancy says. Its funny, the lines of Anita's proposal are too different from what we have today.
I think that is a positive comment. One of the board members thinks that is negative and already starts to hint at a motion to end it all. Things are said but not said at the same time. They are all so scared to say what they really think or are they all not really thinking at all.
The board cries out for the presence of a couple of real business people, Engineers or whatever.
Sometimes its so obvious it’s unbelievable.

The cars are lining up along Barrow to take photos of the two wicked wiches of the west and the wizard of ooze.
I just love that smile on his face!
Brilliant!

Bruce, thanks for posting the maps for us since Eric & crew have yet again made it nearly impossible for us commoners to get information. I hate to bring the group back ON TOPIC (hate to tear you away from your witches), but I'd love to see a N&R story about the fact that being "at capacity" is 1700 students in a high school REGARDLESS of the physical capacity of a building. Did you know that Southwest was the last high school built in Guilford County and it was built for less than 1000 students? Why would we target a school for 1700 if we need 20 or more trailers to fit that 1700?????
Here's an idea - hire a qualified demographer! Or here's another: elect school board members who don't just take whatever staff recommends but who actuallly STUDY it and ask questions (seems like Nancy, Darlene and SOMETIMES Anita are the only ones who do that).

Hey, Barrowrdshow, I don't think those witches are from the west; they are from the South!! I should know I am a witch of the North! And used to be from the West!!!!
Posted on October 30, 2005 3:59 PM
Colfax, firstly, please explain your theory here. I would like to comment but want to understand fully first. WHere do you get 1700 from.
Secondly, I was in doubt about the West part and thing about it now it may have been better to say the wicked witches of the (South) West. More correct would be wicked witches of Central HP of course.
Lastly, Bruce could you find out the values quoted by Erik for each "green" box? Plus FRL and other numbers?
Posted on October 30, 2005 6:38 PM
colfax casey,
Theoretically, casey, the capacity of any school is almost unlimited. I would think the only factor that would truly define capacity would be how much empty space exists around the main building. You see, you can always move in some "Class Room Cottages", so the possibilities are endless. But, that doesn't take into account the BOE buying adjacent land for more cottages. Sounds pretty open-ended, don't you think?
To successfully gain approval of the 2000 School Bond Referendum, voters were promised that the use of the funds would result in a 40% reduction in the usage of trailers. Instead, GCS schools now have a record high number of trailers in use as classrooms – 525 by count. Subsequent to passage of the bond by the voters, the taxpayers have not seen any reduction in the number of trailers as promised. Presently, two School Bond Referendums have been approved by voters for more than $500,000,000, and still GCS has more trailers than ever before.
Posted on October 30, 2005 8:23 PM
Eric Hoekstra has said it's an unwritten policy handed down previously by the board (perhaps when Moses served?) for all GCS high schools to have a target population of 1700. Logic dictates you'd then propose construction money to build actual extensions onto existing high schools if they are to hold 1700 but many of our high schools don't have room to grown because there's no land adjacent to them. Instead, the school ends up with nightmare logistical issues cramming trailers in, limiting parking and creating traffic.
Posted on October 31, 2005 7:46 AM
I never heard Eric say that, and the newest idea in the education arena is that smaller is better. Northern is 1200 with cafeteria and gym holding 1600... go figure.
Posted on October 31, 2005 10:12 AM
The "target" they have tried to adhere to has been a high school no larger than 1600. NOTHING is a hardfast rule.
Posted on October 31, 2005 11:34 AM
Why havent these maps been in the paper? Who can read them? Are they going to be published? I love the way the board members claim that they look just like the old ones!! Nobody seems to remember that High Point doesnt have a map anymore.
Posted on October 31, 2005 1:54 PM
Deb,
Interesting point about gym and cafeteria capacity. Could it be that by that lunches are in shifts? Of course, "PE" is in shifts too, but allowance would have to be made for games and crowd capacity. Both should be adhering to fire codes.
Susie Q, my thoughts exactly.
Bruce, the maps are about impossible to read on line. Are you going to print them in the newspaper, explaing the colored dots, and maybe could some streets be added???
Thanks, Bruce.
