Let's talk about, er, um

Talking to your children about sex isn't easy, but it's important.

Parents who want to get some ideas about addressing this somewhat uncomfortable topic might want to attend a session with Dr. Sol Gordon Thursday night from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at GTCC's Jamestown Campus. The session will be held in the Percy Sears Auditorium.

Dr. Gordon is a nationally-known psychologist who has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Sixty Minutes and Today. The event is co-sponsored by the Guilford Coalition on Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention, the Family Life Council, the Guilford County Council of PTAs and Youth First.

Here's the best part: dinner and child care are free, but you have to call 641-4699 to RSVP.

The Birds and Bees is nothing. Try explaining the Choice Plan to kids. (although one could argue that both subjects are similar in that they both involve explaining who does what and to whom). I'll take Mr. Sperm and Ms. Egg any day.

ps. you thought you were safe on this one, huh Bruce?

Sourpus said:

C. Boy,

Agreed, but make that "Mrs." Egg--That makes the facts a little easier to swallow.

Sorry, I have no advice for making the Choice Plan easier for swallowing. It makes one choke no matter how it's explained. It's simple science that says when something is shoved down one's throat, it can cause pain, trauma, repulsion and quite possibly, even lethal damage.

Now that I sit here choking at even the thought of this "Plan", I think we need some expert to come in and try to explain this nasty Choice Plan. At least the Birds and the Bees are a fact of life. The Choice Plan is someone's half-witted attempt at socialization.

You'd need more than a free meal and free childcare to make folks understand "it."

You know, C.Boy, I've learned to never underestimate the creativity of our posters. If they can turn a discussion on squirrels into a choice plan discussion, they can do the same with a sex ed thread.

And that's fine with me. I just throw these topics out there - you can take them in any direction you like.

Perhaps the Statboy could come up with some interest facts and figures on this topic.

$122K would buy an awful lot of, well never mind.

You know the choice plan has caused me much stress. I didn't realize it until my dentist ask me if I grind my teeth at night!!!

He said I need to get rid of what's bothering me or I will have no bottom teeth left!

I don't know anything about Dr Gordon or his viewpoint. He is NOT credible simply because he appeared on national television shows.

I do know that it took almost a year to get another national speaker on the approved list for Guilford County Schools. His name is Keith Deltano. His message is one of abstinence .... the key here is that he is funny, engaging, and connects with the kids! Abstinence is actually COOL!

I'm not big on the presentations that show the kids the "right " way to have sex without impregnating the unsuspecting adolencent girl. The only "foolproof" method of preventing pregnancy and stopping sexually transmitted disease is ABSTINENCE!

I used to tell my kids NOT to gamble. Now their school system uses a lottery to assign their High School....so much for that lesson....

I'm sure that if I advocated abstinence, our school system would undermine that theory too.

p'd,

you left me with such as easy comeback to your comment.

The school system has taught our kids many "bad" things. The lottery you mentioned prior. They also have given us a lesson in sex education ..... getting @#$*&! isn't all that fun for some of us!

At the risk of being on-topic, Sol Gordon is an old acquaintance of mine and wrote the book, "Raising Conservative Children in a Sexually Permissive World." (I think I got that title right; he autographed it for me and some jerk "borrowed" it...never to be seen again.)

I remember what I took from that book: "Be an askable parent." I tried to be one, and my kids will agree that they felt and still feel comfortable asking me anything. We talk about everything, including sex, with emphasis on responsibility and safety and enjoyment. We never had trouble talking about those "hush hush" subjects because they weren't hush hush. If you're not comfortable with your own sexuality, I doubt you'll want to go to Mr. Gordon's talk, but you're exactly who should attend.

Well ladies and gents its time for the SB meeting again this Thursday and once again redistricting will be on the agenda.
Its make or break time.
If a decision is not taken to stop bussing of children from NHP to other schools and true choice of our neighborhood school given I will "choose" to move.

Gordon's fisherman said:

Choice,

That is the only real choice. I suggest that if you are moving, go as far as possible.

Sue, what do you tell your kids when they say they've been screwed by their school system? That's actually a form a rape since the perpetrator didn't ask and the victim said NO all along.

Can your friend, Mr. Gordon answer that? I hope he talks about sex on buses because if any of our teenagers are doing "it" that's where it would be..that's where they are all frickin' day!

I DO consider myself an "askable" parent, my kids know that, but I can't get my school board to understand that concept. Can Mr. Gordon help with that?

Maybe our School Board members should be mandated to attend. They are the one's doing all the SCREWING AROUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is off topic, but noone here seems to mind. I just found out this week that the school board approved a "No fail" policy. This means that students will no longer be allowed to fail. Teachers that have failing students will be required to make a plan with them so that they don't fail and to stay after school with them. I'm all for helping struggling students and I often give failing students the opportunity to complete alternative assignments in order to EARN a higher grade. However, this plan is ridiculous and puts all of the work and stress on the teachers instead of on the students where it belongs. A student who chooses to not complete their work, skip class, get suspended, etc. should not take away from a teacher's limited time because they could not be responsible for their own choices. Furthermore, this policy will end up causing more problems once students realize that they can mess around and their teacher will still be required to ensure that they do not fail.

Folks, please speak out against this. It does not help a child to tell them they are doing well when they actually need extra help. Also, you will never be able to trust what you see on a report card again. Did your child really earn that grade? How will this affect student performance as they are passed on from one grade to the next without basic skills? Then again, a student can pass an EOC class based on grades, but still have to retake it if they don't pass the EOC exam with a three or higher. What happened to the value of the course work students completed throughout the semester? Are teachers no longer capable of evaluating students? I don't even know why I should give grades any longer. I spend hours grading every night and on the weekends, but in the end my evaluations and assessments do not matter.

Andi said:

P.S. I haven't heard any more about the "nonexistent" zero policy. This is the policy I was told about several weeks ago where students could no longer be given zeros and could not be given anything below a 60. I've been told though to be prepared for it in the spring.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If it wasn't for the kids, I'd be out of here!

debora said:

Andi,
You said the BOE passed a 'no fail' policy. Are you sure it wasn't the downtown staff? Idon't remember any vote on this at the last BOE meeting. Barbara Ann, anyone else remember this? This sounds like a recommendation from the staff, not the board. I am going to check into it.

quest said:

I did not see this vote on the "no fail" policy either and I watch each board meeting.

By the way - Bruce/Jennifer - what are you hearing about the redistricting map that will be presented Thursday night? Will we see a preview in tomorrow's N&R?

debora said:

I looked under the meeting material for tomorrow nights BOE and there are no maps to study as of 10 this morning. My guess is there are so many for Anita's request that they aren't going to put them up. I am looking forward to hearing the savings cost if everyone goes to their nearest school. With gas so high, and now we are $400,000 or so short on money to pay for the new teachers raise it would seem that even the supporters of IT would have to rethink the long bus rides.

tim mann said:

Sue,

Did you say reponsibility, safety and enjoyment? My kids and I have great conversations regarding everything including sex. Your statement regarding responsibility conflicts with safety and enjoyment. My belief is that responsible parents teach their children that the responsible thing for KIDS is abstinence.

Abstaining from the act of sex doesn't prevent a kid from talking about it or how conflicted they may feel because of the pressures from today's society and liberal media.

Education MUST include an abstinence component. Otherwise, children attending these functions would assume their parents condone sexual activity amongst kids because they encouraged attendance at such a meeting. These mixed messages are more confusing than educational!

SCHOOL BOARD DROPS CHOICE EXPERIMENT

With students now assigned, magnet program is revised

ANN DOSS HELMS

Staff Writer

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools laid its 3-year-old "choice plan" to rest Tuesday -- with a last-minute twist in how students will be admitted to magnets in 2006-07.

Tuesday's decisions capped 10 months of public discussion. The school board scrapped the complicated lottery that drew about 30,000 applications a year and had families making long-shot bids for seats in crowded neighborhood schools.

The board also approved new boundaries for Shamrock Gardens Elementary, which is adding a magnet program, and for new schools opening in the Highland Creek, Westmoreland and Winget park areas in 2006.

Sue,

As Tim pointed out, the only true foolproof method is abstinance. There are also religious and moral implications for many kids. Contrary to the many trash videos that are on MTV that make everything look so enjoyable and fun, I haven't seen any videos about all the unwed mothers resulting from all this enjoyment or any videos about the mothers who have to drop out of school. What I have seen is a constant message in music and videos of "buy me more bling, bling and I will put out"

We talk to openly talk to our daughter on many subjects including sex. Along with responsbility also comes maturity to understand consequences of one's actions in life, and the maturity to understand all these new feelings.

There are too many mixed messages out there. Contrary to all the cute litte condom commercials on MTV, there are a lot of babies out there with names like "Trojan". mmmmmm wonder where that name came from. Sounds like an "oops" to me.

Barbara Ann said:

Deb,

I have not seen any vote by the BOE on the "zero" policy on any of my meeting tapes. Could they have passed this at one of the retreats? These are not taped. I would check with Nancy Routh. She is on the Policy Committee may be able to help you.

You made an interesting point about the need for about $500K in local funds to pay for the additional raises for teachers. Now it seems like $500K was the amount to be spent on all that "healin" that people do not need. Also what about the red light money they will be receiving from High Point and/or the money that will come from the state education lottery?

Regardless, you are correct how can they afford the fuel costs for the IT Plan?

Back to Tim's and Sue's thoughts on the sex ed subject.....

While listening to the last school board meeting when Russell Harper was speaking about his great program at A & T Middle College, he was continually asked about noncompliance with regard to suspensions. If we are having a problem with "noncompliance" and kids are allowed to not be in compliance with rules on, for example, disrupting class, cheating on tests, verbal abuse, drug deals, etc., why do we even bother to have a handbook in our schools? Now I guess if we are pushing "noncompliance" with rules of safe sex, or maybe it is compliance with having sex for enjoyment? What messages do we continue to send kids? Is it "anything goes as long as you don't get caught?" I just don't get it. What happened to building character and being a responsible human being?

Barbara Ann said:

one more thing....all this discussion reminds me of a scene from "Mean Girls" (I had to watch this DVD about 10 times when my daughter was recuperating in the hospital - just about have it memorized) anyway...remember the scene where the teenage couple is in the bedroom and the mom comes in and says...."can I get anyone anything, coffee, tea, condoms?"....just makes everything look so hunky dory and fun and responsible - even mom making it sound so COOL....hopefully, a lot of our kids are smart enough to see the irony in many of these mixed messages

C.Boy said:

Hey Bruce, Where was the headlines in today's N&R about Charlotte's "CP" lotttery being scraped? For all the problem it has caused, I didn't'see anything in today. This is the kind of selective reporting that drives us CRAZY!!!!!It's witholding of information to foster an editorial viewpoint.

c Boy,

You expect too much from the N & R.....last night the White Sox won the World Series .... Today's paper reported Tuesday night's results and COMPLETELY MISSED Wednesday's World Series winning game. By the time they report it tomorrow, it'll be old news.

Just like when they get around to reporting CMS's dropping their lottery failure! OLD NEWS!

Andi said:

The information I got from my school said the "No Fail" policy was approved by the Board of Education. I have recieved further clarification from my administration though. The policy will not require us to pass a student. It does require us to reteach, stay after for tutorials (which are already mandatory), and to make a plan with the failing student to help them pass. These are things I already do for the students that ask what they can do to improve their grade, so it's not as bad as I thought it was. Even so, I'm afraid I'm going to end up being responsible for failing students when I feel I'm already doing what I can. Sigh...is this really about the kids or just numbers?
