Teacher pay: Right on the money?
Gov. Mike Easley announced Tuesday a plan to raise teacher salaries in North Carolina. His three-year initiative, if fully funded by the legislature, would catapult the state above the national average.
However, the John Locke Foundation, a Raleigh-based conservative public policy group, disputes the need for the raises. The state's average salary already tops the national average when cost of living is taken into account, according to the group's research.
Meanwhile, school districts have to figure out how to pay teachers whose salaries are supported through local funds. The state allots a certain number of teaching positions to each school district based on student enrollment. Districts have to find a way to pay for additional teachers, and often use local funds to do so.
Guilford County Schools would have to come up with between $350,000 to $500,000 more from its budget this year to ensure all teachers receive the raise, district officials said Wednesday.

Nicely fire Stat Boy, save another 122K..
Problem solved.

Stats Easy,
All good points. And think of the benefits. We part ways with three individuals that are purely overhead, adding nothing to the educational process. None of the three actually affect the learning process of any student within the district. All teachers, on the other hand, have the learning of students as their primary responsibility. For them, it's job one.
We could also transfer the $500,000 budgeted for Crossroads Ministries training. The money would have far greater value in compensating teachers than brainwashing them and their students.
This could set a new trend for the BOE. Imagine, actually putting your education dollars to work right in the class room. What a concept!

When are you going to answer C'boy's post from a couple strands down about the Charlotte/Mech schools dropping their lottery?
Are you planning complete front page coverage like the story about Income & Grades from a few weeks ago?
Posted on October 27, 2005 4:36 PM
Oh yeah, I agree with Stormy's and Stat's cost cutting reccomendations.
Posted on October 27, 2005 4:37 PM
It's possible that we could run a wire story from the Charlotte Observer about this - I don't know, I don't handle that.
But we don't cover the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools - there's plenty for us to cover in Guilford County!
And if you want to read the Charlotte Observer story, Tim Mann already posted on The Chalkboard. I'll keep an eye out for any follow-up stories and if I see them, I'll post them.
Posted on October 27, 2005 4:41 PM
Bruce, what about the taxpayers who are paying for dog-doo programs, who don't read the chalkboard, who are seeing their teachers shortchanged? Do they not need to know there money is being wasted on programs being scrapped elsewhere. This should be FRONT PAGE NEWS here and you know it.
Posted on October 27, 2005 5:01 PM
If the High Point plan gets scrapped, I guarantee you it'll be front page news.
But we didn't run a big story when Charlotte adopted this program, so I doubt we'll run one when they drop it. Why? Because our paper doesn't cover or circulate in Charlotte and the goings-on there might be interesting, but have little relevance to Guilford County and Triad readers.
I think our recent stories about teacher pay raises, high school dropouts and gang activity in the local schools are of far more interest because they directly impact Guilford County schools, students, parents and taxpayers.
Posted on October 27, 2005 5:05 PM
Bruce,
I'm a taxpayer that is being DIRECTLY impacted by , as C.Boy puts it, DOG DOO!! So I expect coverage of this latest happening! I'm funding a plan that is seen as TRASH in another city. Now that DOES directly affect this area and you DO know it. I suspect Grier just doesn't want this on the front page or any page.
If you don't think that is news-worthy, then you definitely are sucked into the GCS worm-hole!!!!!!
You didn't even give it a Chalkboard thread..I notice that the happenings in SEATTLE got your attention and that's much further away than Charlotte. You are geographically literate aren't you?
That's okay, I suspect the Rhino will do it justice next Thursday.

Seems to Have Been a Busy Week For the HPPD.
When will this come to a HEAD???????????

Bruce, we ARE coming to your house and bringing a priest. You can spew green vomit on us and spin the whole noggin' around 360, you need EXORCISM and you need it NOW!!!!(please, we could do without the crucifix scene-Smarti takes care of that one anyway) Grier is in you, boy! We fear for your immortal soul.

I believe the N&R can cover any lottery/magnet story countrywide when it suits the agenda of the N&R and the School Board. Case in point covering Dr. Kohlenberg over a year ago when that renowned expert came to Guilford County to preach the wonders of a multi-magnet school system.
Why not give equal coverage to a "local" system that has decided to do "a 180"? Why not examine what the Guilford County system is attempting to do versus another in-state system? Why not challenge the School Board once in a while.
I'm afraid that Bruce and Jennifer do so much head nodding that they need to wear "Hans-devices".
Posted on October 27, 2005 9:21 PM
I think that Bruce can't take that someone whos normal job isn't journalism came up with the story first.
Posted on October 27, 2005 9:37 PM
C Boy,
You expect too much from the N & R.....last night the White Sox won the World Series .... Today's paper reported Tuesday night's results and COMPLETELY MISSED Wednesday's World Series winning game. By the time they report it tomorrow, it'll be old news.
Just like when they get around to reporting CMS's dropping their lottery failure! OLD NEWS!
I'm just glad I happened to pick up the paper while I was in Charlotte yesterday!

10 Star,
Things are not rosy here either, fights and other criminal activity run rampid at Northeast High, Eastern Middle and High, Hairston, Jackson, Allen and numerous other schools. Teachers assaulted and doors held shut, holding them in the classroom so they can't break it up in some instances. Legions of kids involved in some fights. None of it has made the news. Don't understand why. Help!!!!!
News media, please help!!!! Investigate!!!!
Posted on October 27, 2005 10:52 PM
East Side,
10 star forgot he is now 11-star because of his work in the trenches of school combat.
Why won't these teachers band together and speak up? With the need for teachers out there, they can't all be shipped somewhere else? Where is the help from the teachers' association? What will it take for change to occur before someone is killed in our schools?
C boy,
I see you are sure in the Halloween mood.
Posted on October 27, 2005 11:00 PM
East Side,
What about the letters in the N & R that thinks are Hunky Dory now at Eastern (contrary to what the speaker at the school board meeting said a few weeks ago with her attorney)?
No need to answer.
We know what letters get printed.

I agree with Stormy that the $500,000 should come from the healing budget. The majority of people do not need healed. And for the ones that do, no amount of money is going to "heal" them. What a waste!
Also on watching some of the SB meeting tonight I picked up the comment that "substitutes' raises follow teachers' raises". I have been subbing since 2000. I have not seen a raise yet. I would think that our teachers have surely had raises since 2000?? So this was not a true statement; unless the person was referring to how the state gives subs' raises?
Deb, anyone, can you clarify this?
Posted on October 27, 2005 11:11 PM
Barbara Ann,
I'm sure that you didn't hear the whole statement there about substitute's raises. I'm sure what the person said was that substitute's raises follow "way behind" teachers' raises. Like 4 or 5 years.
Posted on October 27, 2005 11:31 PM
The substitutes pay is going up about $2 per day(I think)-- it was stated that that raise was tied into the teachers pay. Maybe the subs pay rate is only subject to the state required pay-- not the supplement that the county pays. Not much was said about that part of the money. More Nov 8 about where the money will come from.

Debora,
What is your initial reaction to the proposed redistricting map presented last night? If adopted, what impact, do you see, it having on Northwest and Northern?
Posted on October 28, 2005 8:49 AM
One reason 47 systems in NC did better than Guilford County is that the BOE and the N&R seems to be uninterested in what is going on in systems that are performing well. You would think that they would study success and import some of the ideas to Guilford County. It seems that the BOE thinks they now have the best ideas and methods and why bother to study other systems. It is called the "head in the sand" approach.
Posted on October 28, 2005 9:11 AM
NW and Northern would benefit from the new proposals, as they would not be over capacity! The one component not discussed was the cost of transportation (that was part of Anita's request)-- There were slight changes to each school-- but the maps followed alot of the same lines (even when they don't make sense) Eric's map wasn't handed out, just the current map. It was on the screen, but I can't see that very well from the audience. Page attendance line put over 2400 going to that school(if they went to the closest school) so of course many of those were moved. Current capacity there is 1650 or so and they are around 1700. What is showed me is that growth isn't always around a school. Since Northern will be the first new HS in many years it was obvious that they are needed. The elementary schools will be interesting.
Posted on October 28, 2005 9:17 AM
Jennifer/Bruce,
Can you post the map?
Thanks!
Posted on October 28, 2005 9:18 AM
Would it be easier to come up with these funds if half of the teachers quit? The teachers over at Western Guilford appear to be up in arms. They can't wait to hear how Dr. Grier's raise will be rationalized and paid for this year at their expense.
Apparently one of these WG teachers lives near SWHS because I have received a copy of picture of him holding up one of those old "Get Terry Grier Outta Here" Signs in-between 2 witches dressed up as Dot Kearns and Susan Mendenhall.
I would go over there and investigate, but I'm reluctant to go by myself, what with crime on the rise over at SWHS and all.
Posted on October 28, 2005 9:28 AM
Buckmtn,
I haven't heard about the Western situation. What is the deal? Crime, lower standards, crowding... what's up?
Posted on October 28, 2005 10:07 AM
Debora, you are the one person who keeps to the agenda of this Blog and you are to be commended for not only that but your endless dedication to the schools, teachers, and children.
The deal is complete DISENCHANTMENT with the current conditions and management of the school system. I don't frequent the same breakfast spot I used to due to carpooling with Mrs. Buckmtn thanks to high gas prices. However this morning we took separate cars and I was cornered for quite some time this morning with many venting teachers that are my friends.
Apparently these teachers do not have much use for the academic facilitators?? I'm not sure what these positions are or if I have identified them correctly. I can tell you that these teachers believe the facilitators have a great many degrees without any practical experience.
This is from teaching professionals with over 20 years of service.
Posted on October 28, 2005 10:26 AM
I saw the tradegy this morning as I was taking my son to SW elem. I guess Susan, Dot and Terry flew home last night after the bored meet taking the usual trip by SW to poop on top of it as they go by.
Unfortuneatley thay have met with an awful accident. The bodies were still there as of this morning and I haven't heard anything on the news about them being missing or anything.
Bruce, is this another story that you are late on?
Posted on October 28, 2005 12:06 PM
Cirriculum facilitators are suppose to teach all the new teaching skills, testing stuff etc. As with most positions, some people are good (NWMS's is GREAT) and some are not. I would rather have another teacher at most schools (for instance at Laughlin we have one for just K/1) I would rather have a teacher or 2 TA's instead... just my opinion.
I hate to hear that about Western, and fear that many people that can will retire ASAP, although last years number of retirements was inline with the states' numbers. If any professional is consistantly unhappy in their job, their performance will suffer. The bottom line is the kids will suffer!
For everyone's info, the next board meeting will include a review of Dr Grier's performance. Not sure why that was stated, if I remember correctly all that is done behind closed doors. With scores down, costs up, and general unrest in alot of the population (I heard Darlene say that the benchmarks were full of problems) it will be very interesting. I fear that many of the BOE don't ask the hard questions, and don't dig deep enough to find out the real truth.
Posted on October 28, 2005 12:59 PM
Debora,
They don't ask the hard questions because A) they're not smart enough to know the right questions to ask, B) they don't want to know the answers.
Posted on October 28, 2005 1:38 PM
I have been subbing for about 15 years. A few years ago we were given a long overdue raise and told that our pay would be tied to the teachers' raises in the future. As I recall, we received modest increases a few times, but then they stopped. The last few raises that teachers received did not result in any raises for the subs. I was happy to see that Governor Easley has not forgotten us. When I first heard about the teacher raises, I thought, "What about us?" I just finished 9 weeks in a class that was without a teacher. What would they do without us?

I HAD A DREAM. We did exorcise Bruce! It wasn't pretty. The house was rockin', the drawers went in and out. One minute it was hot, then it was freezing cold. We heard languages we've never heard before and never hope to hear again. Much to our amazement, and adding tremendously to the task, there was not just one spirit, but a host of spirits.
The first out looked like Kris, she looked weary and enshrouded in a kind of fog, but we knew it was her because her hair was impeccable. She said she never really believed in the choice plan but was threatened by more powerful spirits who told her she would would be cast out of the beauty parlor forever plus Page and Grimsley would never get another g.d. thing. The priest quickly absolved her and she went on her way.
Next out looked like Gary. He said he was just back for a quick visit for the free eats at the retreat/ Grier's performance review. He said that he had to do some fast talking to St.Pete at the gates, but they finally let him in after convincing the Man that he voted the CP after Beelzebubb threatened to see to it that his Parks & Rec job be taken over, possibly by Doug Clark.
Next out looked like Johnny, who looked like he just woke up. Johnny said: "What the f--- are you M-----F------doing? It's you people!!! You just don't want your kids to go to school with black kids"!!! We said: "Ah, Johnny, SW is 30% black". "Really"? "You ever been to SW, Johnny? "Southwest? Where the f--- is that?". The priest then asked him if he wanted absolution. I won't tell you what he said to this fine man of the cloth because it was profane. He then laughed and flew out the window.
Next the air assumed an odor of strong perfume and the rustle of petticoats was heard. Marti appeared-as Marie Antoinette. She looked at us, sneered, then proclaimed "let them eat the Choice Plan" . The General withdrew his large machete from it's scabbard, but she floated out the window before things got even more messy.
Next out looked like Alan. He was wearing a suit, smiled, shook hands with everybody. When asked about the CP he said "Look, I don't know how I can make it any plainer to you. Between the unfunded mandates, NCLB, dwindling budgets and having to live with the decisions made by this group of crazy b--- I mean witches, GO TO PRIVATE SCHOOL YOU DUMB BAS-----. OR MOVE" The priest then offered him absolution but Alan said not to bother, it wouldn't take, he's a lawyer.
Next we heard country music, loud, and then a loud YAHOOO!!! Out came Stoppin' Sue. Cowgirl hat and all. She tried to get the priest to line dance and poured shots for everyone. She said she's just a good ol'gal and she was misunderstood. She said this whole thing was just a misunderstandin'. We said:"Sue we used to like ya'and we thought you were our rep. We even voted for ya'" . She tossed another back and said; "thing's change". "Ya'll just ought to move down to Emerywood. In fact, anybody want to buy a house? Good deal..." We walked her to the window for some fresh air...and she jumped. It looked dicey for awhile, but she recovered before hitting the street and flew off with another YAHOOO!!!!
Next, the whole house seemed to lift off it's foundations. The lights, even our flashlights, went out. The air took on an odor of rotting flesh. We were then blinded by an ice-blue light and a snarling face appeared, wearing what looked like a Dolly Parton wig. The face started talking...softly. Hard to tell exactly what she said at first, or later for that matter. By this time Bruce was starting to regain some consiousness and we asked him what she was saying. He said he had no idea either. She then turned and said to us; "Why can't you people just go along?" We said we would if we thought for single minute that she would lotterize Emerywood kids away from Central. This seemed to piss her off. Her voice then raised almost to a roar , then exploded..."YOU INSOLENT YOUNG UPSTARTS!!! Don't you know, you owe your very existence to the powers that be. You have no rights other than what we give you. You are a province of Emerywood. YOU ARE NOTHING!!!She then let out a long agonized wail, then in a little girl voice began to sing a song from the early sixties which sounded like "Let's Twist Again" (like we did last summer). She grabbed the priest and began to shag, fast. The priest fought her with all his might and started his incantations and espiritu sanctu's etc. They twirled so fast they almost became one, a furious dervish. They spilled out of the window. They hit the street hard. The demon separated from the priest and flew off into the night screaming; "And I'll get elected again, and again, and AGGGGGaaaaiiinnn ahhhhhh". Before we could react, we heard a loud SQAWLK like someone passing wind. We turned to see someone who looks like Terry emerging form behind Bruce. He looked at us chuckled and said: "I hope you know I had nothing to do with this. In fact, I have nothing to to with anything. It's all the board. I only implement what they tell me. Too bad about the priest. Hope he'll be okay. You know I'm actually a pretty nice guy. You know, I consider all the children in Guilford Co. mine in a way. Maybe we can all just live together.Maybe at the Grandover. Sing with me now:
Terry loves the little children
All the children of the world.
Red and yellow, black and white,
they are prescious in his sight, Terry loves the little children of the world.
We all began projectile vomiting to the point of losing consiousness. When we awoke, Terry was gone. Bruce was mumbling, covered with sweat but okay. Oh, and the priest is okay too. He's recovering nicely. Drop him a card adress to Father Tim c/o Moses Cone Grnsboro NC and have a Happy Halloween.

Sigh. I feel like Charlie Brown when all he got trick-or-treating was that rock.
Is it too late to switch to Fast Forward or the Musical Garbage Can? They don't get made fun of on their own blogs.
Then again, if you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at? Nicely done, C.Boy. I hope the Great Pumpkin is good to everyone in Chalkboard land!

Bruce, you must admit; there are quite the characters on this blog!!!

Bruce, what do you mean you got a rock for Halloween. In the dream, you are saved now, resanctified! You should be celebrating. Maybe you could celebrate your redemption by doing the little expose on Becoats you hinted at last week, but we realize it may be too soon. Peace be with you.

A reply to a nasty blog by Emerywood's correspondent Doug Clark
He called Steve a 'mystery man'? I had breakfast with
the 'mystery man' this morning!!!
Believe me, I have followed Steve's record of public service for years, and
it is no mystery why he has served us so long and so well in public office.
Steve Wood is solid, true-blue, through and through
for me and you, the common people. Not the
high falutin blueboods----and certainly not the
liberal media types
My guess----Doug Clark..is miffed that the voters have
elected Mr. Wood, to the NC House eight times,
over the editorial animadversions of the journeyman journalist.
Fact of the matter, Doug, you don't exactly hold the voters in very high
esteem, do you? I guess that is a collateral element of the media/elite
arrogance..." we know what is best for you more than you know for yourselves."
You were right about Mr. Wood being "plenty smart" though.
Plenty smart not to do an editorial interview with the NR
or the Enterprise. Those glowing editorial endorsements
of the incumbent are pro forma and knee-jerk.
Plenty smart to be an advocate for 'real school choice'
while serving in the Legislature, not some 'school chance'
lottery imposed by the GCS on High Point.
Plenty smart for opposing 'merger' of the High Point school
system in 1992. Rep. Wood reminded us all then, and now,
that it was penny wise and pound foolish for a city to give
up its own school system.
Plenty smart to be the first Republican Chairman of the House Education
Committee in over 100 years.
Plenty smart to use that post to support tuition tax credits,
vouchers, and lead the way to establishing charter schools
in North Carolina.
In fact, Phoenix Academy here in High Point is part of the legislative
legacy of Rep. Wood's leadership in education
for our state and our area. Mr. Wood is widely recognized as
the 'father of charter schools in North Carolina' by school
reformers.
Plenty smart to achieve one of the most conservative
voting records in the NC House during the last 25 years.
His awards and recognitions during his 16 years in the House ----the
longest term of service ever by any High Pointer-----include "Taxpayers Best
Friend", "Friend of the Family", and "Guardian of Small Business", to list just a
few.
Mr. Clark's column included some derogatory remarks about Steve
by fellow Republicans. Mr. Wood's Republican credentials
stack up pretty well, I think.
President Bush appointed Steve to the Selective
Service Commission in 2001, a post in which he continues to serve.
Steve is a former vice-chairman of the Guilford County Republican party.
Governor Jim Martin, GOP Governor, honored Steve by
awarding him the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest
civilian award presented by the Governor of North Carolina.
He was named Republican of the Year in North Carolina
in 2004 by the US House GOP Congressional Campaign Committee.
But Steve respects the fact that there are good people in
both the Republican and Democrat parties----as well as
Unaffiliated and third parties.
Plenty smart was Steve Wood when he garnered bi-partisan
support to be elected Speaker Pro Tem of the NC House
when the rest of the Republicans were fighting among
themselves.
The Mayor's race is non-partisan. Steve's record shows he knows how to work
within our two-party system to lead a
taxpayer-friendly,
citizen-centered City Hall, for all of us, Republicans and
Democrats, North and South High Point.
Steve's roots are 'deep' in High Point. A former professor at John Wesley
College, he moved here in l978, with his new wife, Starr. Their daughter is
an honor graduate of High Point University. (Just ask Dr. Corey about her
academic credentials!!)
A man of great faith, Dr. Wood is a former pastor of one of our city's
historic churches, Deep River Friends Meeting.
Steve's experience and leadership for us in the State House
would serve us well here in City Hall.
You've heard the old phrase, 'you can't fight City Hall'.
We won't have to fight City Hall with Steve Wood as our Mayor. He will be
there fighting in City Hall for us!!
We, the voters of High Point, will be plenty smart
if we go the polls ----either during early voting or on
election day, Tuesday, November 8----and elect Steve Wood
as our next Mayor of High Point. And, that's no
mystery, man!
