What's in a name?

The Guilford County Board of Education is seeking your input on what the new middle school in northern Guilford County should be named.

Now, it seems unlikely to me that this school will be named anything other than Northern Guilford Middle School. But if you like that name or have a different suggestion, pass it along via the public comment tab at the school district's Web site. Or you can mail your suggested name to:

What about calling it

"NOTENUF" or
"TULIDDLETULATE"

"Reassigned"

Please translate! Is that British for "Northern Choice Plan?"

Also, we missed you at the NHP board meeting. Your punishment is that you must sit through the one being held tomorrow with the other 'bored' members.

The name does not have to be Northern Guilford Middle School. We have Kiser and Grimsley on the same campus with destinctive names. We also have Lincoln and Dudley that have destinctive names. The question before us is whether we want a 19th directional name school or do we want one that personifies excellance. There are many available.
The list includes:
Dolley Paine Middle School
Ronald McNair Middle School
Edward R. Murrow Middle School
and there are others.
Recently I had a person that was not from this area look over our names and she said that the names lack creativity and inspiration. I have looked but have no other system that has so many directional names. Does it matter?
Yes! If you want to a great school system, you must be on message 24/7. Using a distinctive name would not cause confusion. What causes confusion is have two on the same camput with almost identical names. Guilford County BOE has a clear choice between excellance and mediocrity.
Do you really want the middle school to be an apendage of the High School or do you want it to have a distinctive name that all can be proud of.

I think if Joe wants Edward R. Murrow Middle School, that sounds like a great name. He worked so hard to name the high school that so this would give the name a second chance. Also he sure makes an effort to go to every school board meeting so he certainly tries to stay involved in the issues.

But then again I don't live in the NW end of the county. Many SW refugees are heading that way though. So it really doesn't matter personally to me.

To be fair, I would do a choice of maybe three top names and distribute a written survey to the folks who, at this time, are supposed to attend that school. But keep in mind, this could always change.

The new school in the "Northern area" should NOT be named similar to the High School nor elementary schools near it.

LONG gone are the days where you went to "Perfect Elementary" then "Perfect Middle" and then on to "Perfect High".

LONG gone are the days that your child could wear his siblings 'hand-me-downs' because in THIS day and age, children do NOT follow on to school where their siblings went.

THIS is Guilford County Schools. Students go to school NOT knowing which school they will graduated to.

Start calling the schools numbers. That's how the students are identified.

I vote for the name PS #1 for the new building. Let's just start being honest here. No more fluffy names for the schools. Let's take the numbers OFF the buses, put them on the schools and start naming the buses. THAT'S where our kids will be all day!

Busing is coming. Start naming your buses Greensboro!

It's only fair that schools should honor the people who create them and the great philosphies they live by (or want us to think they live by to get the vote).

Let's try:

Chairman Mao / Chairman Duncan Middle School (CMCD MS) for short.

or

Ho-Chi Kearns Middle

or

Grier-Trotsky Middle with the main building on campus named Stalin / Mendenhall Hall.

I'm sure we, or a reporter from Pravda, er..I mean...the News-Record can come up with more.

If I remember correctly, Marti Dykes wanted to honor the name of some Rubber Company because they gave some donation of some sort. Sorry my facts are sketchy, but I was thinking "The Northern Rubber School", or just something with Rubber in it. I don't mean rubbers IN the school, ...well, if that's needed fine, but I just meant "Rubber" in the name.

Maybe it's the Gates Rubber company? Did they fund some type of grant? Maybe Marti could clarify. But I think Rubber has a nice ring to it. The mascot possiblities would be endless.
