One other thing: I don't want folks to think we've suddenly become the Wake County Schools Chalkboard. A reader simply requested that I post this article and we try to honor those requests.

Looks like this lady has been reading this chalkboard for the last year or so.

It is so obvious to everyone except our SB and Dr.G"rear".

Ahh, that's music to my ears. I applaud her for taking a stance. We still cannot get our local public officials concerned enough to make a statement.

I have personally spoken to Ms. Matson. She, like many here in High Point, is just a mom that has had to become a system babysitter. She is the most informed person that I know now on the legalities of public education. For those that read the New York Times piece, you MUST read her comments because, as we often see here, the media didn't do their homework. Ms. Matson has done hers.

Economic integration may look good in theory, and obviously does because many in High Point grabbed on to the idea for dear life the first time that Grier and the BOE started their secret meetings. BUT, one must live the plan.....ride the bus....talk to the children.....watch their progress....talk to the families....talk to the teachers...to see that it's not all what it's cracked up to be. AND, no one mentions, not even the New York Times, the cost of these experiments. The financial burden on systems is astounding and no one mentions what is getting LESS funding due to the high costs of busing. Busing is not the only cost. I think it would be sickening to even wager a guess as to what Guilford Co. has spent JUST on public relations--to smooth this plan over with disgruntled citizens.

I could go on and on but Ms. Matson says it best in her rebuttal. She says it even better than Ms. Kakadelis, but, since she's just a mom, she doesn't get much press time.

Bottom line, economic integration creates a blurry, quick-fix for school administraions. In the end, the children are not getting an ioda of increased academia.

AND, my last thought on the subject, just as Ms. Kadadelis says, families are creating their OWN choice. Those that can, are leaving Wake Schools in record numbers. The same is happening here in Guilford county. It will be somewhat difficult to integrate by economics if the upper and middle classes are exiting the system.

Thanks Bruce for posting. I'm sick of being sick of this topic but Ms. Matson is an inspiration and as a parent, I will fight this. It's an injustice to the poor children. It truly is a slap in the face to them and a LOUD message that THEY are doing something wrong. Shame on any system that uses this "cop out" type of a plan.

My neighbor is moving to Florida in a week or so due to her husband's job promotion. I talked to her today. Her 9th grade son was lotteried to Central this year. She said he likes it okay but misses his buddies he has had since "forever" dearly. So he is glad they are moving. He doesn't care. He has been depressed since school began. He has lost his "buddies" already.

While the rest of the entire county gets to know where they will go to school, our kids are cheated out of this tradition. See "Off the Record" today. Some people still just don't "get it" - the idea of neighborhood schools. It is not the "location"; it is knowing where you will go to high school with the same kids you have bonded with for years and not be a lottery number to satisfy politicians' personal agendas and voting promises to certain groups. (refer to P-G forum if you were there - a lot of comments were sure flying around)

Just tonight on the news, three students at A & T were killed in a car wreck. They have known each other since high school and longer and now stayed friends through college. There are some things that are more important than the utopian idea of a perfect mix that you will never find.

This is stable friendships that our children need at this vulnerable age. That is the travesty of the IT plan. You are cheating our children out of this.

You will never ever get the perfect "mix" because what is the "perfect" number. The more you strive to achieve this goal, the more people will leave the system. The more our kids will have to cope with.

I think teens have enough in their lives to deal with and stability should be a number one priority.

As we have all said before, if this is so great than surely the entire county needs the IT plan. We might as well force all these kids to "get over it" and just "adjust".

I saw the most laughable comment today on the front page of the HPE. The article is entitled "Moving graduations concerns parents". The article is about moving Central's and Andrews' graduation ceremonies to the Greensboro Coliseum so people can fit.

"Debbie Maines, a Central parent, said it will hurt the 'sense of community' and make it hard on parents who rely on public transportation to travel to Greensboro for the events."

Since when since the vote on 2/10/04, Black Tuesday, the inception of the IT Plan did the majority on the SB show they cared about a "sense of community" in High Point? I think at this is a moot point in light of the past two years' events. Did anyone notice all the carpooling in HP? Did anyone notice all the shifting of schedules and lack of family meals? Did anyone notice that a lot of kids due to "lack of transportation" don't even go to "their" school's
sporting events. Did anyone care that the "Cowboys" had to give up their traditional high school because they were the ONLY high school in HP who did not get 100% of their first choice in High Point high school lotto? Why should this be a "surprise" now about "community"?

To me, graduation should be where you can comfortably fit everyone one who wants to attend to see the students graduate. Now that our graduation rate is supposed to be going up, we will probably need more room to fit everyone. And let's not forget about those fire marshalls. Don't want to have to call them out like they did at the SWH forum in winter 04.

We should have a place where all parents and friends can fit to see the students graduate.

p.s. Article also states that SWH has traditionally held commencement exercises in Greensboro. It ends by saying Maines will present a petition to the SB for Central, Andrews and Southwest graduations being held in High Point.

Why does anyone want to take away another Southwest High School tradition? Haven't we lost enough?

How quickly you forget Southwest or former Southwest parents are not citizens they are city revenue producers, no rights, no representation!

I say petition to get Southwest schools out from under District 2 non-representation. The kids cannot travel (that's what they say) within satellite schools but we can have a satellite school board member?????

Funny you should say that. My friend just e-mailed me and said we should petition to have our graduation ceremony in Davidson County. (HA)

I just wrote Dr. Grier and the SB and expressed my opinion about keeping the SW tradition of having their graduation in Greensboro. Central and Andrews does not speak for us. There are obviously legitimate space and safety concerns.

I encourage every SW parent to write the SB and Dr. Grier and let your wishes be heard.

I am tired of parents from other schools trying to tell SWH parents what to do.

You don't get it. You're white and middle income. You don't understand the great pains that many families have to endure. You should just shut up and be happy with what you have. People like you need to share your wealth. You should let them ship your child to whatever school needs a smart, whitey. AND you should volunteer as much as possible and tutor, for free, any child that is not making the grade. If some parents do not have transportation to an event that's in the next city, you should offer to drive them. If some schools do not have paper, you should provide it--or have a bake sale or something and give the proceeds to the school with the most need.

What's wrong with you stupid Southwest people? Don't you know that those big homes were built in North HP for a reason? You are supposed to feel sorry for the rest of High Point and, sort of, adopt and take them under your wing.

Does this have to be spelled out for you? YOU are supposed to save poor "old" High Point. You have NO choice. Either do what they say or get outta here!

Thank you to all the SW parents who took time to write the School Board and Dr. Grier to express your concerns about the tradition of our SW graduation being held at the Greensboro Coliseum and the safety concerns for all who attend any of the graduation ceremonies.

I had written an additional request this afternoon that GCS provide bus transportation to all in the county who cannot make it to the graduations but would like too. I was THRILLED to see they are doing that this year. this will be great for many of the kids who work so hard and deserve that support. Tax payers may get to check out some of those new activity buses that are being ordered if they are in by then.

Especially is was so gracious of Lisa Cooke, Principal at Eastern, to switch her school's graduation date so that all 3 HP high schools can now participate in grad fest.

Hopefully, for the class of 07, all the high schools in HP will have the same dates early on.
