Lots of school news today

Don't say we aren't giving you your fill of school-related news this week!

For starters, the Guilford County Board of Education met with state legislators yesterday to discuss the minority contractor situation. We've talked about this before and Doug Clark has a thread going on his blog, but the short version is that some board members want more African-Americans hired to do construction work for the district.

Also on Monday, Guilford County's newest school, McLeansville Elementary, opened its doors. Or should I say reopened. The school was a middle school for decades, but closed in 1999. It's been refurbished and looks really nice. The new school will help with growth in the eastern part in the county.

Finally, we brought you the sad story of Charles McMillan. McMillan, a former Andrews High teacher, pleaded guilty to improperly touching a 16-year-old student.

Bruce,

The only sad things about the Charles McMillan story is: 1) he got a slap on the wrist and was given 3 years probation (another sexual predator receives a light punishment), and 2) our school district still doesn't seemed to have learned its lesson and established an appropriate background investigation program to avoid hiring people who would be dangerous to children. I suppose that something really bad has to happen to a child, and some properly angry parents have to sue Terry Grier, Mike Harris, and the BOE, before they get to an understanding.

STORMY, YOU ARE SO RIGHT. THINK OF HOW MANY GIRLS MR. MCMILLAN GOT TO BEFORE HE WAS "CAUGHT". HE GOT OFF TOO EASY. HE SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN HIRED IN THE FIRST PLACE.

AND WHAT THE HECK DOES HIRING MORE BLACK CONTRACTORS HAVE TO DO WITH EDUCATION? MINORITIES WHERE HIRED. THEY ARE CALLED WOMEN.

THESE ARE SAD TIMES INDEED.

Stormy, I just think it's sad any time an educator betrays the public's trust so completely. Even before this mess came out, McMillan lost his job at Andrews because he and other teachers were supplying students with answers to the state's End-of-Grade tests.

It's a shame, because the vast majority of Guilford County's teachers are decent, honest and caring individuals.

Bruce,

What is GCS doing differently now in regards to background checks?

Numbersgame,

Something on that was in one of the newspapers today - the HPE? I believe they are double checking against the SS number to see if a person lived all the places they listed. They are not just depending on references. See today's paper.

This would be a good question to ask the administrationa and school board directly.
