Under review

Tuesday night is a big night for Terry Grier and the Guilford County Board of Education.

The board will conduct Dr. Grier's annual review - and discuss possibly raising his pay - at Tuesday's meeting. But if you plan to go, bring a book and maybe a pillow: the item is the last one on the agenda and the review will be in closed session, although the board will read a brief summary and announce any pay raises afterwards.

There's plenty of other stuff on the agenda, though, including continued redistricting discussion and an update on Northern High School. To read the full agenda, click here:

UPDATE: You can read today's story previewing Dr. Grier's review here.

What's there to think about, give him the max. Our district's famous! According to the N&R editorial page, the Russians are coming to examine our system. Here's people that could presumably choose any school district in the whole country to examine, AND THEY ARE EXAMINING OURS!!!. Now, one could conclude that these Russian educators are some of the smartest people around, and they are coming around to see what NOT to do to run a harmonius, successful operation, or you could conclude that they may be completely daft. (It is rumored that this delegation is from Greensboro's "sister city"- the Russian city of Smolinsknekovstrebytovich, which loosely translated means: "people who leave the crapper-lid open while floating weightless in Russian space station", so one would have suspicions that it may be the latter.

Give Terry the max!!!Besides, let's not shoot ourselves in the foot here- the more money we give him, the sooner he may retire. Nostrovia!!!

FYI: the Russians aren't just coming to study GCS. They are visiting local colleges (both public and private) and private schools like Canterbury and the American Hebrew Academy. These folks want to see the wide gamut of education in Guilford County.

Svetlona said:

Surely then they won't want to miss Andrews. I heard Fantasia will be the guide for that tour. I heard her Russian is improving since she got the hell outta here.

11-Star Gen. Slak said:

Bruce,

The Russians should get to see the best of education(American Hebrew) and the Worst(GCS).

Speaking of Grier, I hear there's going to be a BIG ERECTION of some sort in his honor.

Stay tuned....

Spare me. I am so sick of this man. I'm going to have to pray tomorrow for the Lord to forgive me of all the unChristianlike thoughts I have had towards him. I hope the Lord will undestand. I may even pray for Mr.Grier...no, I'm being serious. I think he and the rest of the school board need a lot of prayer.

FormerTeach said:

Grier a raise, let's see. I was a teacher in this system for 4 years. I started at roughly $27,000 and after four years was making $30,000. Grier already makes like 7 times that and every time he gets a raise, its something like $15,000 or more. Every time I got a raise it was like 600 dollars at the most. Why is he so much more valuable than me? I busted my butt, spent my personal money, neglected my family and my own health, and was assaulted several times without anything being done by administrators (their hands were tied though because of Grier and his fear of being called a racist). So I say go for it, give Grier a raise, loose more young talented teachers. Pretty soon you will just have Grier and only Grier to teach all of your kids.

Gilda said:

Hey Former Teach, how about they get rid of all the teachers and have the kids learn by a recorded lesson on a DVD since they teach to a test anyway??? All they have to do is turn on the DVD. Think of all the money they could save.

Then Grier could get a SUPER DUPER RAISE!!!!!

Brown&wood said:

Dont forget to vote for Brown and Wood. They will end the bussing (sh "IT" plan)!!

Andi said:

Dear Former Teach,

Just out of curiosity, what do you do now? I've heard many teachers talking about a possible career change and several more that are retiring early. My problem is that I love teaching and I would like to begin doing just that. I say that I would like to begin teaching after being a teacher for a few years because so little of my job has been about teaching and helping educate our kids. Forget about bonuses and raising salaries. Money didn't entice me to teach to begin with and it won't be enough to get me to keep teaching under the current conditions.

Nancy Nurse said:

Andi,

Have you ever considered nursing? I used to teach and then went back to school for nursing. What many don't realize is that nursing is so much about teaching. It's not hard at all to make the career change. Many colleges offer a bridge program.

Good luck. We're your evidence that you tried sticking out Guilford county. It's a wonder that anybody stays.

BROWN&WOOD-

Many questions arose after Mayor Smothers sent out her flyer late last week. Here's acopy of the response that I sent her and several others that asked me questions re: ABC's role with this year's candidates. (Also posted on Doug Clark's Off the Record)

Good Luck to Y'all on Tuesday!

November 6, 2005

Dear Mayor Smothers,

I am sending you this e-mail and am forwarding it to several people who have had questions regarding the content of your letter since receiving it. In particular, most questions have been regarding your comment about "arranging meetings between leaders from the ABC group and civic/business community".

The meetings you were referencing happened prior to my accident. I don't have the particular date, but I think they were in the spring of 2004. One was between John Faircloth, you , Michael Murphree and myself. The other was held at the High Point Museum with quite a group of distinguished leaders of the High Point community. For those meetings, I appreciate your assistance.

I must also add that during that period, your opponent, was the Chairman of the Education Committee in Raleigh and also was of assistance to our organization.

Unfortunately, neither of your help was enough to get the Guilford County Board of Education to stop the ill-conceived, under-funded, lottery that buses North High Point's students all over the city. Distrust of elected officials and cross town residents will continue until a child knows where he or she is going to school based on their address and not their "free and reduced lunch" meal status!

Additionally, I want to make it clear that neither I, nor ABC, has endorsed any candidate in this election. In fact, at this point ABC is a dormant organization. I assume the PAC will be active again before the school board elections in 2006.

My reason for not endorsing anyone is simple. I personally do not believe any of the candidates has been involved with, or has a solid grasp on the education system in Guilford County, in general, and High Point in particular. Hopefully, your workforce preparedness study will reveal what all of us in North High Point and Jamestown have been saying for the past several years. The Guilford County School system is FAILING to provide a sound basic education to the kids in Guilford County. Because of that FACT, High Point will suffer until our elected officials take a stand.

Best of luck on Tuesday.

Tim,
sorry, but you are just covering your a.. here. I respect you as a person but the fact is that Wood has come out and said he will fight the SB.Mayor Smoothers has only come out and said something now because she is losing ground. In fact her implying that she had been dicussing with ABC is an attempt to get the support back. It is a weak lie!
Wood has been the only clear voice against the Chop plan.
There is only one clear choice for change and that is Wood. Smoothers is more of the same.

Gilda said:

I like to know where the educational study is that Mayor Becky said the city was doing?

HOw come this study is being done now? It should of been done a long time ago perhaps before the IT plan went into effect. I thought educational issues were not a concern of the city.

Well, Becky is not getting my vote!

tim mann said:

Coverurass,

No ass covering here. None to be done. I'm just a voter NOT A POLITICIAN. I had my chance and want no part of it!

Just clarifying for Becky, et. al. that NO candidate has my support. I stated my reason in the letter - NO candidate has been involved with us closely on this issue.

You're correct in the fact that only Steve Wood has said he will fight to eleiminate the plan. His background with the legislature should give him a leg up on this topic.

Bottom line is that if we all don't get out and vote--- we'll get Emorywwod's choices ---- No one wants that!

one big uterus said:

Tim,

if "No candidate has your support" then I'll assume you're not voting. So you and Jonathan can just sit back and watch...BUT, I cannot afford to sit back and watch. I have kids that are being screwed with, and more kids in line for the BIG screw as 9th graders.

I WILL NOT BEAT AROUND THE BUSH!

I WILL BE HAPPY TO ENDORSE THE TWO CANDIDATES THAT CAN OFFER PARENTS IN HIGH POINT SOME HOPE.

Mayor: Mr.Wood
Ward 6: Mr. Brown

You see, I have a uterus. You may translate that into "She's got balls". I will advocate for better schools in this community if I have to start building it myself BRICK BY BRICK!!!!

For anyone unsure about the best candidates for High Point, I can assure you that Mr. Wood and Mr. Brown are the men for downtown. I'm a mother that has kids in Guilford County schools...for now, and I've done my homework. These 2 men will seek out positive changes for our schools.

For all you that can claim to "endorse no candidate", well that doesn't help me or my children. We need help NOW. So when Status Quo and her sidekick are elected, don't wonder why the same ol' is occurring. Remember how we felt when the status quo was re-elected for school board? We shot ourselves in the ass. I for one am tired of that pain in my ass and do my part tomorrow.

Tim, I hope I can count on you too.

Mayor Becky said:

You fools, I own all of you.

Haven't you ever heard of lie and deny?

All of you need to get lubed up for 2 more years starting Wednesday morning.

You know how Bruce Davis is Skip's houseboy, well I have located my own little housegirl right underneath your noses.

Unbelieveable said:

The new major does not need to be an expert on school issues but has to have the forsight to see an injustice when its happenning right under his/her nose.
Becky has stood by and let this happen without no comment.
Now we have the chance to elect someone who has come out and said he is against it.
Why would anyone who is against the "coice" plan therefore vote for Becky?
A no vote is a vote for Becky.
Come on Tim, think about and get your backside down the the voting booth!

bruce buchanan said:

I probably shouldn't encourage this, but I'll ride by this evening or tomorrow and take a look...although I'm not sure I want to!

WOOD COULD said:

I have never seen Becky Smothers attend an ABC meeting when it was in existence. And I attended about every meeting. I have never heard her come forward against the Choice Plan in public, in writing or in talking with her in person.

The workforce study for HP students in a bunch of political b.s.! Private citizens have been keeping up with data on the schools and their failings for several years. This is nothing new. It is just a political ploy to look concerned. A little bit too little, too late. Where was the City of High Point when the "Choice Plan" came on board? It failed the first year and continues to fail, where have they been? We have known students are not prepared and for a long time. Since the mayor has stated that the city does not control the schools, what would this accomplish anyway? Oh, I forgot, it only gets involved in the schools when it comes to the stadium and extra parking for the MARKET or when wanting to keep the red light money, that by law, belongs to the schools.

Tim Brown has taken the time to sit and talk with several of us. Steve Woods has called and talked to us. These two men have action plans and have not been afraid to speak out AGAINST the choice plan and its elimination. They are not pretending to be concerned at the last minute for the sake of "politics".

If you vote for Becky and Lisa you are voting for the same b.s. in our High Point Schools.

If you can't decide and aren't voting as someone on this CB stated, you have only yourself to blame when High Point schools continue to go down the tubes.

tim mann said:

Uterus, Woody, Erector et. al.,

I wish I could be as creative with my name as y'all are.

You misinterpreted my lack of endorsement as meaning that I had no intent to vote. I plan on voting tomorrow for the two people who I believe take care of my personal number one priority - ELIMINATE THE LOTTERY PLAN. There is no need for me to share my vote with anyone as I believe each person that has the same concerns will arrive at their own conclusion. Voting for what we believe in is the only way to effect change and to take care of our kids. The most important thing to do is to VOTE! See you at the polls.

Have no fear! I've seen the display - it is very, very cute and clever! My hat is off to the creators of this display. It is one that I would be pleased to show my children.

Be sure to take your camera - you'll definitely want pictures for tomorrow's N&R.

Bruce,

Better take your WIDE lens! It's hard to fit "it" all in! Please do share this with all N&R readers. Voting day is the perfect day to see a nice color photo in the paper. After all, this is all about our kids...our future.

To the creators of the erector set:

Did you used to work at Macy's doing window displays? You must have taken Creative Design 3-D 101 at the SW Famous School of the Arts. How far were you bused to take this course? Did you have to work in 3-D because you didn't have paper to draw on? See this is the bright side of not having paper to work with. You must be creative in 3-D and other medium.

That truly is one awesome holiday eye candy for adults and children alike.

I heard someone yelling "REDNECK" today and driving backwards. Who was that crazy person? There are little kids who cross that street and ride their bikes. That person should know better.

I thought I saw a sign on the display that said "No trespassing" and someone's name printed on it. Was this the person who stole the Halloween display from your property?

Where do you leave the donations? And what will you use the donations for? I hear that SW Middle School needs calculator batteries for the school calculators. I think the paper situation is under control.

Someone said you will be adding a spotlight for night-time viewing.

What a good idea.

Lights!

Could we charge an entrance fee?

Vegas Vinnie said:

A fee to give for children's school supplies would be great. I hear plans are underway for the Christmas display.

There will be live characters like Santa, the elves and others, lights and music. Candy Boy wrote a song and will be bringing his guitar and singing some of the songs he wrote. He has to change some of the words for the holiday theme.

The seamstess is working on her new yellow designs from her ponchos. The skirts and tablecloths were a huge hit.

JoeSmoeisafoe said:

An entrance fee is an excellent idea! We could give the money to the teachers since the SB can't find the money to give them a well to do raise!!!

I hope there will be another display for xmas, New Years' MLK Day, Valentine's Day, President's DAy, and Easter. I could on and on!!! Hell even Groundhog's day would be great!!!!

North of 311 said:

I will place my donation by the display to pay for electrical service to protect this and other displays from being stolen or defaced by little intruders. Here's another idea. Put the display and e-bay to create a traveling display for all to see. You could use the proceeds to buy paper or other supplies that Grier never ordered. Where's Sodexco when you need them? I wish we could also vote to not give the big turkey a raise tomorrow night! Our only chance of doing that in the future is to vote WOOD AND BROWN!

Gilda said:

If you are going to charge an entrance fee, let me have some of the money for gas since I am carting about six kids down to Central! And it is costing me a MINT!!!!

Joeynotaboxer said:

Don't forget Veteran's Day,Hannakah, Mardi Gras, St. Patrick's Day, May Day, D Day, VE Day, Flag Day, 4th of July. The possibilities are endless.

Cost of display materials: $50.00
Cost of lighting: $10.00
Cost of air for blow-up $ .00
Live display volunteers $ .00

Cost of the smiles: Priceless!

Joeynotaboxer said:

Gilda,

Since you are doing your share of driving, Santa will give you money for gas.

North of 311 said:

Gilda,
Put your kids faces along side of the kids in the piece of art. We could put 200 kids in the yard for those that could point to SW as their school thus far. The numbers will keep climbing as long as the turkey is in charge. Let's cook him before Thanksgiving this year!
