White flight in California
White students are leaving the Cupertino, Calif. high schools in droves. White enrollment at Lynbrook and Monta Vista high schools has dropped by nearly half in the past decade and many white families say they are avoiding the city's public schools altogether.
Lynbrook and Monta Vista must be failing, right? White students must be leaving because they aren't being challenged academically.
Well, not exactly. White students are leaving because there are too many high-performing Asian kids in the Cupertino schools. The schools are among the highest-performing in northern California and grades are so high that students with a "B" average are in the bottom third of their class.
Perhaps the most troubling thing to me is that white families aren't leaving high-performing (but whiter) schools in nearby Palo Alto. The message seems to be, "We like academically competitive schools, but we don't like competiting with Asian-American students."
This seems to be a sharp contrast to something Ronald Reagan said. Reagan, when he was governor of California, proposed eliminating race as a criteria for admission to the state's universities.
Someone asked him, "Well, what if Asian students beat out white students for those spots?"
Reagan's response: "So what?"

I think this is a baiting post and a waste of good blogging space. We all know why many people are leaving the public schools. It is spelled:
LOTTERY (all in BOLD)

A school should strive to be academically balanced in the curriculums it offers. There should be classes for high performing students, average students, and programs for students who have not desire to go to college - vo-tech programs. There should be alternative schools and middle colleges for those who aren't making it in traditional school. Programs should fit the needs of students - all students. All students should be encouraged and given support. There should be clubs and sports that meet the diverse interests and talents of many children. The key word is "balance" in many areas; "balance" in a teen's personal life - academics, social, spiritual, physical development.
When my daughter was doing a project for Social Studies a few years ago on Japanese food and clothing, I read that Japan had a high rate of suicide among their teens because of too much pressure. The author mentioned there was such a heavy push on succeeding academically. Social pressure is put on the mother of the family to make sure her children are educated and succeed. I guess we would have to live in Japan to fully understand their culture. It is very fascinating to read about this culture.
From reading the article on the California School, it looks like people will continue to move, no matter what race they are, if the school system is not meeting their academic needs. It does not look like social engineering in the end works anywhere. It look like no school will ever reach "utopia".
People will go where they feel their child's academic and developmental needs are met. These California parents have a choice to where their children will attend school. These parents know ahead of time if they want their kids to follow this high academic bar. They can make a choice of where they want to send their child to have their academic needs met. Their kids aren't put in a lottery to take a long bus ride for an academic "focus" that may not meet their needs for their futures.

I believe that is very likely that Asians and some other nationalities who have moved here to the US push their children to succeed and they generally to over acheive.
So What. Good for them.

Now there's an idea. get all the Asians in the county and send them to Central and Andrews..
That should do it..

Parents are leaving these schools because the schools are less concerned about students than about maintaining their high academic reputations. Students who are not high achievers are not welcomed or accomodated. Parents whose children are not thriving are virtually paying for the education of other people's children through their property taxes or contributions to the schools. It doesn't matter what race the students are. It just so happens that successful Asians have flocked to the area for the schools and greater affordability than what could be found in Palo Alto, not to mention a comfortable community. The school district should be held more accountable to all students.
