It wasn't too cold for Dottie to be at 4 seasons this nite.

Last minute shopping I suspect.

More important than doing her job I suppose!

Oscar Mayer said:

They're all weenies! They'll do anything to get out of discussing the rational Anita maps!!

Isaw,

I betcha Susiee was home drinking a hot dotty!!

Walter was home asleep.

Terry was home counting his money.

Alan was getting a makeover.

Didn't you know Darlene, Anita, and Nancy had their own meeting without the knuckleheads!

Who knows what Smarti was doing?

Deena was home writing a proposal on how the SB could find a minority Santa.

Baby Jane said:

Good. IT will be a few more days to get the 6 votes for the removal of the IT Plan. Anita's maps can be fine tuned by then.

N & R, front page Sect. B High Point section

"Foundation allots grants to nonprofits"

"The Andrews High School grant of $40,000 will go toward a revitalization plan that includes 'increasing student achievement' and raising 'the level of collegiality among the faculty adn staff'."

The High Point Community Foundation gives money every year to Andrews. I truly hope the money will be used wisely. Please just don't tell us that there are not extra funds from other sources poured into school that need them. The money is always there. It is how you spend the money.

Bruce, feel free to start a new strand on this subject.

Barbara Ann said:

also don't forget about the grant money the three high schools in HP received for "smaller learning communities". In what ways is this being done and how effective is it? Extra space should indeed be used for smaller teacher/student ratios.

Two years ago a member of the HP Community Foundation said funds were being used for "community relationship problems" at Andrews. When questioned further what that meant the person said "gangs". Let's hope that money two years ago helped.

No one can argue that this school indeed needs help. (See the NC report card on it.) I truly hope it gets the right help it needs. Much of that will have to come from within the school system itself. The other part will have to come from INVOLVED parents and not just a few whose kids go there. The Arts could prove to be very helpful in this endeavor. Especially if they were used as incentives to help maintain decent grades, promote a sense of pride and belonging, and reinforce positive recognition.

Just read in the Greensboro altenrative newspaper that Terry Grier was for GCS to achieve a first in the country. He wants every child to graduate being proficient in a second language. That's a noble endeavor, indeed. Now, when will they start working on haveing every child be proficient in their first language, or are we going to do it in reverse order?

Not so Merry Mary said:

Thanks to the Grier-inch, Christmas break is now shortened..uh,...I mean, the "Holiday" break has been shortened....sorry Terry. I'm certain now that this man is either an atheist or a devil worshiper.

What makes me SICK, SICK, SICK is the fact that teachers have already planned these days off so I can tell you what the kids will be doing these days. They'll be watching TV and playing games. So for all those kids that have relatives coming into town, you'll have to play with Grandma and Grandpa later because you need to go to school and watch Barney's Christmas.

Thanks Grier-inch, you're truly the modern day Scrooge. I bet you re-gift, too!

Continuing my free statiscal analysis of GC Edu I noticed that the number of children "taking" physics has dropped quite rapidly over the last few years.
Anyone guess why?

Schools analysed are:
Andrews,Central,SE,SW,NW,Smith,Dudley.

01-02...329
02-03...306
03-04...196
04-05...167

I would of thought our it should be going the other direction.

ScottB said:

Maybe if the School system wasn't focibly busing kids to the SEVENTH closest school to their home, they would be able to go on a two hour delay instead of no school at all.

Go Nancy! You get'em girl!

Did they just eliminate the lottery?

Biotekboy said:

Yep. 7-4 it's done!

Wow said:

Wow,
what a meeting that was.
Grier got pi...d and threatened that staff at Washington would be fired at some point if they dont improve. Deenha almost said that Grier or some of his staff could be fired too. It works both ways.

Nancy fantastic.

Darlene asked Smarti how would she feel if "Abbey" was lotteried? Smarti did not like that at ALL!!

Than they voted the lottery away!!

Gone!

Wow said:

Kris was fantastic too. I take my hat off to the others that voted it out as well.

Who were they now?

Amos,Darlene,Kris,Alan,Deenha,Anita and Nancy of course.
I think they are all on Santa's nice list now!!

Double Wow said:

Don't forget about Dot's true agenda coming out so clearly and mentioning the City of the Dead dying. She mentioned the mayor's committee proving this. It proves they have all been on the same page all along. I thought she was an at large board member. My bad.

Darlene was at her finest and quickest in responding to Dot and referring to Smarti's daughter.

Nancy calm, cool, collected and logical.

Anita still sharp on questioning Eric's numbers at Andrews.

Amos and Nancy were quick to point out problems with last night's map.

Next is the big presentation of all the maps to the public, especially Anita's map that had been tabled for the closest neighborhood schools.

Susie did not like last night's map. It did not help her Alma Mater.

The lottery is gone!

debora said:

Congratulations to all the IT haters! I was very proud to hear people speak up for thier beliefs. Whaqt amazes me is that no one actually talked about education (except Darlene)-- the bottom line!

Dr. Grier said that some of the schools would become title 1 (meaning at least 75% FRL) and of course then they would get some more money-- back with the money comes stricter accountability and sanctions. It would seem to me that Andrews is already getting all the negative stuff from the state without the money that the Fed Title one would have given them. Any news on how the assistance team is doing at the school?

I am thrilled that there will be attendance zones, although not everyone will like where they are at least you would not have the 'unknown' in front of you each year.

Double Wow said:

Debora,

Thank you. Last night's map was just one proposal of many. There will be public comment on ALL the proposed maps.

You would not like going to the lowest performing school in the state. Changing the student population does not address the failing students. Changing student populations does not address the discipline problems in the schools.

C. Boy said:

The best part of the mtg. was when Grier said he has heard the SW parents ask for a traditonal school so they should have one, now like he suddenly cares. You could even see Amos' jaw drop and the other boardmembers try to keep from laughing. So totally outrageous. Can this man actually think people are that stupid. Scary stuff!!!

C Girl said:

Right on C. Boy. I thought Amos would fall out of his chair. He wanted to change his vote. Nancy said it was not what she was told either. How did Grier whip that map out so fast.

Close off Southwest High to anyone other than the immediate surrounding zone and leave not option programs there. "The parents want a traditional school. That's what they want." He conveniently FORGOT to mention the part about leaving SW intact the way it was before the IT Plan and how it was redistricted in 1999 based on the proposed bonds.

If the map last night passes, THEY WILL NEVER, EVER, EVER GET ANOTHER BOND PASSED. NEVER! The proposed map last night leaves not room for students to come to Andrews for any magnet program. It will be filled up by a major redistricting. It essentially puts much of the SW school in a building known as Andrews.

Why is any redistricting going on in High Point if there is no proposed high school being built? NW and Northern need to allow for a new high school. SW does not.

I disagree on the best part of the meeting C Boy. The best part was when Dotty lost if with Darlene.

Barbara Ann said:

Bruce/Jen,

Can you post last night's latest proposed map or find out when it will be on the GCS web site. Hopefully it will be readable.

Thank you.

Norskar said:

Bruce,

Just a point of clarification. The A1 headline in the News & Record, as you know, said "High Point Plan Abandoned," but the High Point Enterprise reported "Choice Plan May Change."

Since both headlines were reported out of the same meeting, who got it wrong?

Barbara Ann said:

Norskar,

The lottery component is gone. Some of the "magnets" or focus programs will remain. It is still not clear what will remain at SW. Nancy and Amos questioned this. Amos was ready to change his vote. The map that was presented last night did not cover what Nancy mentioned in her motion.

You need to watch the school board meeting.

It will air again on the school channel.

As for the headlines being different, it is a matter of semantics.

Yes the lottery was abandoned, but some of the programs will remain so it did change.

A simple request to any of my NHP friends. I'm out of town and reading about this on the website.

WOULD SOMEONE PLEASE RECORD THE REPLAY OF THIS MEETING TODAY SO I CAN WATCH IT THIS WEEKEND?

Hope to see everyone after Christmas so I can finally participate in the next display.

Do you just want the cat-fights or the whole thing?

Worth Keeping said:

Buckman,

Last night's meeting was better than the best episodes of Survivor and even the Commissioners Meeting you love so much.

It was great to see some true feelings come out.

I thought Alan did a great job too in his lawyer sort of way.

C. Boy said:

You can't help but get the feeling Eric Clapton's "Dull Surprise" is still out there circling. Whoever catches it has to ask the question- Why? If socio-economic redistricting is being done to you, if your kids are on a bus to a new school and the Grimsley and the Page are not, then you yell your butt off. If you don't get an answer other than "it just won't work in Greesboro, then that is unacceptable. end of story. Don't let Greensboro politicians defend diversity to the last drop of..."your blood"'and not theirs.

I will never forget when our Troops in Iraq won a Major Battle and captured one of Sadaams' Palaces,,,the photo in the paper showed a certain General taking a DUMP into a Golden Throne, located in one of the lavish bathrooms of the Palace....

This brings to mind an Idea .... Does Anyone have Keys to DOTS' House?????????????????

P.S.

This Battle was a Win,,,,but the WAR rages on.....

Buckmtn said:

Amen General, we still keep our friends close, but our enemies closer. We all know that some of last night's Yes votes could be an unpleasant redistricting vote.

Worth & Worth, I just want to see from Dr. Routh's motion forward.
