Thank you for giving us a link to this article and the information on KIPP. The article "A place where poor students can aim high" appeared ironically in the back of the N & R in the obituary section. Sadly, this is such a dynamic educational idea that it should have made the front page.

This is a proven method that addresses the real problem of education head on. This program or a similar approach could help a school like Andrews. Continued attempts at SWAP OUTS will not work for numerous reasons. It will do nothing to educate those kids who need the most help.

I look at it this way. If you own a house that has not been taken care of in a proper way, it starts to deteriorate. Rot and termites may set it. It has suffered from neglect. It depreciates in value. Do you spend big bucks to put a dilapitated house on a wide moving van and move it to another location. NO. It would be a waste of money, may crumble in the move and would still be the same dilapidated house at the new location. But the house is still valuable to you for historic reasons and other reasons and you want to keep it. So what do you do?

You attack the problem head on. You invest in this house. You pay the specialists to come in and fix it. You put the right resources into it. You put in HARD WORK. You fix the house. Then you market it. Many, many people will now want to come and be part of this special historic house that has done a 180. You put in caring, time, resources and the end result is positive and meaningful.

This is what needs to be done at Andrews. Quit putting the house on a moving van. Quit trying the wrong answer - a patch job, a few pieces of wood, some higher scoring students in and taking out the low scoring students. The state already has some of their specialists on board. It is time that the needs of this school are finally addressed in academics, discipline and hard work. Make the work mean something. People will want to come; people will want to get involved.

This could be the example of a success story in Guilford County that may be copied by other educators in the state.

Barb, You need to be careful what you are suggesting. It actually entails WORK. It's not like saying; "Let's make it a unisex school or let's bring in some kids from someplace else, or let's have them go to school at the mall, By the way, I'm off to Virginia to speak at a seminar on innovative curricula (on my own time of course) because I'm one innovative son of a buck. Dangerous Stuff....

There was a wonderful program on PBS in October which focused on high poverty schools and how new approaches made each school into a high achieving school. No bussing involved.

In every instance, it was magically discovered that "it not the kids, it's utilization of staff and resources. Several segments of the video focused on teacher training, heavily scripted but effective lesson plans for classes and schools, and using well trained veteran teachers in high poverty schools.

I believe Ms. Hayes has touched on some of these same points at several school board meetings. It seems that a better solution than bussing kids is a realocation of staff, resources, and the best, most experienced teachers.

I will gladly purchase a copy for any school board member or N&R writer or editor if they want a copy. It's time to stop blaming kids and where they live and actually try some effective instructional strategies.

One of the problems is GCS is always trying "parts of programs". I believe when Kalenburg (spelling of name?) came to speak he mentioned that if you do socioeconomic diversity it must be practiced in the entire school system, not just 3 schools in one city of the county which is continually treated differently. Entire concepts are not tried and they don't have community buy-in. Remember the beginning of the IT Plan and community buy-in????

Also the article on Kipp is referring to a College Prep and Pride High, not an elementary school. There is a huge difference in the attention span of an elementary school child and that of a teenager. Many teens expect long days with extra school activities, band, sports, etc. School can be a fun place to be. Also there are different motivation factors and of course majority levels in explaining the goals and the real prize for all the hard work.

Scott I wish I had caught this program. I had heard about it. There is also a similar successful program I think in Hampton, Virginia.

The program of long days will work well with young kids regarless of the theory of children having short attention spans. While that is true, it does not address the fact that children can be acclimated to an enviroment of longer days.
My daughter attended a school which ran until 5 pm when she was of elementry age. It worked very well. The children not only learned academic subject faster and ahead of peers attending "normal" school hours but also had opportunities to enjoy "recess". Yep, good ole outdoor playtime, regardless of the weather (except rain of course). They could run, play and get some fresh air to stimulate their brain instead of sitting inside of a "conditioned box" all day. They also participated in music classes, vocal and instrument, as well as learning to listen to music and understanding some of the history of such. Then there was the art program where the children actually got to put on smocks and get messy if necessary to create art and then there was the learning of art history and appreciation of such.
Broken up into small, manageable segments , these classes will work exceptionaly well for young children. I saw it with kindergartners through high school. It works.
Oh but someone was correct. It takes work and if parents don't understand work ethic how do we expect children to understand the same. Perhaps this would be a great way to start!

I agree with many of the comments about improving our schools by focusing on the schools themselves and not shuffling students and looking at programs that target at risk students. However, I would have concerns as a teacher if my school decided to implement the KIPP program and have longer hours and school on Saturdays. Longer hours do allow for more instructional time and time for students to practice their skills with a teacher rather than just having homework. I wonder about when these teachers involved with the KIPP program have time to grade or complete the endless paperwork it seems that teachers always have. I usually stay at school for several hours after school to finish up work along with working on lesson plans on the weekends already. Currently, I am having to use part of my Christmas break to work on lesson plans, a reward program, and paperwork (that must be turned in as soon as I get back to school) because we lost two teacher work days due to the ice. What do these teacher do about childcare or spending time with their own children on the weekends? I care a lot about my kids at school (or I wouldn't devote my time and money in helping them), but my family should come first and they are often neglected because of the hours I already spend at school.

Programs such as these have been proven to be effective and the school day length is only one aspect of the KIPP program. However, do not forget how educators are affected. At the rate that NC and other states are losing teachers, this is an important consideration.

I'm not sure how well the KIPP concept works with young kids, but the original KIPP school in Houston serves pre-K through 12th grade.

To me, the biggest difference between the KIPP schools that have worked so well in Houston and the failure of the concept at Hampton is that KIPP was a charter school, meaning parents wanted to be there. In fact, they had to apply to attend. That meant they had to buy into the program.

Hampton was a combination neighborhood/magnet school. Many of the neighborhood families simply didn't want to go to an extended-day, extended-year school, so they opted out by the hundreds.

The same applies for the teachers. KIPP was a new school, so the teachers applied and knew what they were getting into. Hampton tried to introduce the program into an existing school. Even though teachers had to reapply for those jobs and many of the staff members changed, it's still different that starting a brand new school.

It's hard to make a combination magnet/neighborhood school work in general. You have two groups who have two completely different - and often competing - ideas about what a school should be.

Teachers are, by nature, altruistic. Everyone knows they are underpaid, but it's not easy to solve this problem. But we can all do something that is easy and will show future and present teachers that they are appreciated. They need to be told how their influence made a difference in someone's life.

There are many other methods that can be used to raise student achievement other than 6 day weeks. The other programs featured in the PBS video "Making Schools Work" focused on making sure teachers have the tools and skills they need as well as making sure that on-site staff focused on instruction and not bureaucracy.

I agree that a long day for a child could be fun if it is broken up. When I sub now, I can see kids are rushed, rushed, rushed to fit all the lessons in. I wonder if they are actually learning sometimes or just rushed to the next item on the agenda. That doesn't include those students leaving for EOC, AL classes, special needs classes, speech classes and trying to keep everyone caught up together - a real shuffling act.

Art, for example, could be a lot of fun if you had enough time to ever finish anything.

Andi does have a good point about longer days for teachers, but this could be handled with the proper support team and lesson planning time during the day.

Yes, I can agree about the kids being rushed from one subject to another and they certainly learn less than if they are not rushed to "fit them into the program" instead of fitting the program into them.
My grandchildren tell me they have so little time to actually learn a lot because of the rush. There is so little time for questions and I know that it really hurts some teachers not to be able to take the time to answer these little inquiring minds.
On Andi and the long days. Yes there was planning time for teachers during those long days because there were art teachers, music teachers and PE teachers which gave the teacher much more time than they have now. The teacher would usually go out with the children during the PE time either in the morning or afternoon , occassionaly both times as it gave them a break outside as well from the staleness of the building's air and a time to stretch the body a bit.
Unfortunately positions such as art and music are being eliminated as fast as possible inorder to pay big bucks for those who sit around and make work for the teachers instead of doing work, real work, and I think you know what I mean.
