More on single-sex schools

Parents at Washington and Hampton elementary schools aren't too pleased with a Guilford County Schools idea to turn their schools into single-sex schools for boys and girls.

Both schools have seen tremendous changes in recent years and parents at the schools say they don't need another. In addition, they say they haven't been consulted about the proposed changes. But Guilford County Schools officials say they will talk to parents if they decide to move forward with this proposal.

Jannie,

Depends on where you live whether or not school officials listen to you.

Susan is trying to stop public input on the "new" redistricting lines. WHY?????

When GCS was going to implement, a smaller learning community at Grimsley the Grimsley parents did not want it and what happened? POOF!!! it was gone.

Nevertheless, guess who supposedly has smaller learning communities HIGH POINT! Just depends on where you live and IF you have representation.

Does anyone see a pattern here?????

Same mantra from me again.

What is the GCS plan for magnet/specialty schools?
What are the objectives of said plan?
How will they be measured?
What is the budget?
Will you hire veteran leadership so they can attract and retain quality teachers?

Until you have objectives, a plan, a budget, a way to measure success and proven leadership, you have NOTHING ..... all you have is hope. Hope is NOT a plan, it's a dream.

No more dreaming...... we need results.

With their change in school board seats the Wake Co board is quick to act towards schools closest to home. It seems that trying to make up for the prior board's mistakes, will create additional problems. Why do we have to make the same mistakes?

Here's the story from yesterday's News and Observer.

Parents balk at school changes
Thousands check out plan to reassign 11,495 in Wake
T. Keung Hui, Staff Writer
Thousands of parents relearned the lesson Monday that living in Wake County means not being sure where your children will go to school each year.
Parents flooded the school district's Web site at www.wcpss.net to find out whether their children were among the nearly 11,500 students who could be reassigned to different schools next year. Although some came away happy, many were unhappy about the potential effect on their children's education and their lifestyles.

"It's the continued not knowing each year," said Chris Polli, a Cary parent. "I kept playing in my mind about telling my neighbors we could go to Panther Creek [High School.] They said, 'Surely that won't happen.' I said, 'Surely you're not used to Wake County.' "

If adopted by the school board, the proposal to move 11,495 students would be the largest reassignment in Wake's history. School administrators say they have to respond to record growth, which brought 6,436 new students this year, by filling seven new schools and easing the crowding at existing schools.

Parents were waking up early to see the proposal when it went online at 5 a.m. By 4 p.m. Monday, the district's Web site had received 602,600 page views. Most of the 500 to 600 calls to the district's Customer Service Center concerned reassignment, school administrators said.
Ramey Beavers, the school district's senior director for growth management, said he expected the high level of interest. "We wanted to hear from the public, and that's what we got," Beavers said.

Administrators will take comments until Jan. 1. They'll review the suggestions and present a refined plan to the school board in February. The plan could be adopted in March.

Beavers said the response so far has been 50-50 positive and negative on the plan.

"A lot of people were writing to thank us for moving them or not moving them," Beavers said. "Everybody is not unhappy about the proposal."

Some parents were ecstatic. Residents of the Riverside division in North Raleigh let administrators know how happy they were to be reassigned from Fox Road Elementary School to Wildwood Forest Elementary School.

"THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR GIVING US A NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOL -- WILDWOOD FOREST ELEMENTARY!!!!!!" Riverside parent Anna Farrell wrote in an e-mail message to administrators. "WE ARE ALL IN TEARS OF HAPPINESS!!!"

But many other parents weren't happy about a proposal that affects most elementary schools and all 17 high schools.

Some parents are concerned that their children are among the 3,097 elementary school students who could be reassigned from traditional to year-round schools. Wake plans to make greater use of year-round schools, which can handle up to 33 percent more students than traditional schools by keeping the buildings in constant use.

Wake has designated five new elementary buildings as mandatory year-round schools -- Barwell Road, Brier Creek, Carpenter, Holly Grove and "E19," a modular school to be temporarily put next to East Millbrook Middle School.

The potential shift to a year-round calendar would mean immediate changes for families. North Raleigh parent Janet Pretsch said her family would have to put on hold a July family vacation to Hawaii because it would conflict with the year-round calendar at Brier Creek. Year-round students start school in July, compared with no earlier than Aug. 25 for students on the traditional calendar.

"There are so many things changing for us, not just a school but a calendar," said Pretsch, who now has two children at Hilburn Drive Elementary School. "That's a lot to throw at families at one time."

The reassignment proposal also involves shifting 4,345 high school students steadily westward to relieve crowding at several schools and to start filling two high schools opening in August -- Panther Creek and Holly Springs. The movement would split up some siblings -- rising seniors and juniors can choose to stay at their current school if they're reassigned, but younger siblings must go.

Polli, the Cary parent, could have a daughter staying at Cary High and a son reassigned to Panther Creek. The same situation happened to her three years ago when reassignment resulted in her older daughter staying at Green Hope High and her younger daughter being moved to Cary.

"If this goes through as planned, with three of my four children I'll have been at three different high schools," Polli said. "There's no sense of school loyalty here."

The tremendous size of the proposal means that even parents whose children aren't being reassigned, such as Millbrook High PTSA President Margaret Frucht, worry about how it will affect their children's schools. Millbrook's enrollment could increase from 2,087 students to almost 2,500 next year.

"Anytime the word 'reassignment' is mentioned, it's what gets everyone at school concerned," Frucht said. "Reassignment is a big thing. The question is: When will it stop?"

Dave Duncan, vice president of Assignment By Choice, a group critical of the district's assignment policies, said it heard many complaints Monday from parents. He said parents want to keep their neighborhoods together and to have at least a year's warning before moves happen.

"People are sometimes going to have to be reassigned," Duncan said. "It's not so much about that as it is about keeping peers together."

Administrators have repeatedly said that they value stability and would like to try multiyear reassignments but that growth has been too rapid.

County planners in November projected 126,681 students would enroll next year, up from 120,507 this year. Those projections, however, have underestimated growth in past years.

While repercussions of reassignment are obviously greatest for students and their parents, businesses feel them, too.

"Many families are pretty savvy about the schools they choose, so a reassignment can be very upsetting once they're settled in," said Jewell Parker, a real-estate agent with York Simpson Underwood in Raleigh.

Knowing a neighborhood might be reassigned can also make decisions tougher for both buyers and agents.

"You just have to tell them you don't know where their children will go to school," said Parker, a Raleigh-area real-estate agent since 1984. "In our work, you don't sell a house with a guarantee of where the child will go to school beyond the current year."

Continuing my free statistic consultation for GCS I have come up with more interesting facts.

Reminder.

Passing rates for Central and Andrews down (Choice plan).

Similar schools Smith and Dudley up (neighborhood schools).

Now

The average student to teacher ratio for the county is 1:15.
Andrews has 1:18 and Dudley 1:17.
Central has 1:19, whilst Smith has a whopping 1:23. Just think what the modest improvements in passing rates would have been at Smith with a decent ratio.
Why are all these schools not at the county average level? Better still why are they not lower.

Free and reduced lunch levels are:

Central and Smith 64%.
Andrews 57% and Dudley 53%.

Race;

Central: 40%White: 44%Black: 7%Asian: 8%Hispanic.
Smith: 11%W: 72%B: 11%A: 5%H.

Andrews: 28%W: 76%B: 2%A: 2%H
Dudley: 1%W: 96%B: 1%A: 2%H.

My conclusion is that if you follow the SB's theories and sum it all up Dudley is more disadvantaged than Andrews and Smith is more disadvantaged than Central.

So why do Dudley and Smith show improvement in passing rates over the last few years and Andrews and Central the opposite?

This is a case of Terry selling a plan as a smokescreen to hide his real results and a few board members buying it. The only thing Grier can do is invent seemingly sexy programs. Keep changing, ducking diving, a red herring here an Aunt Sally there.

Terry Grier’s motto is probably:

You can fool some of the people sometimes but I can fool the school board always.

“WAKE UP SCHOOL BOARD”

systemofadown said:

Tim,

Yes, your message is the same and is still on target the question though is anyone listening!

Let’s go down your list of concerns:

If you have attended or watched any recent school board meetings it seems the plan for magnet/specialty schools is more, more and more of them. Who needs a plan if you have SIX VOTES. What will come first same sex schools or the Montessori middle school in High Point? As a note: it appeared Grier was dismayed last week with the world-class programs not being utilized as had been “dreamed” by the board. I think it was the same time he introduced same sex schools?

Does anyone remember that old small school over in High Point that the board lost sleep over last year? Whatever happened to that building? There wasn’t going to be enough time to reinvent it if the vote wasn’t taken by December but the High Point Plan was voted on in February and implemented the same year.

The objectives of the said plan were recently posted on another strand by Stormy if I recall correctly. There was not much substance in the goals and the bigger question remains do they apply to all of Guilford County Schools? Are the goals currently being met in High Point? I know the board does not want to count the first year of the plan but I have to remind the board CHILDREN attended school that year. So, if the first year doesn’t count then where does that leave our current sophomores?

You cannot measure something that is not happening!

What is the budget for the High Point Plan? That is one thing the school board should NOW be questioning.

How much is being spent on marketing?

Here are just a few of the costs associated with the plan:

The wonderful letter from the superintendent reminding the parents why they are not registering their freshmen students like parents of the other eleven high schools in the county.

The printing cost of full color registration books that are sent home with the upcoming freshman

The man-hours spent putting those books together and concocting new classes.

Then there is the whole busing cost not including the act of rolling on the pavement. The handy dandy I want to ride a bus form that has to be filled out and returned. It used to be the kids knew when and where they would catch the bus from middle school on. Now it takes an act of congress to find out if you have a bus to begin with. Then how many schools do the students have to stop at before the bell rings? I think that is fine if you wish that for your child but when it is mandatory, that’s a horse of a different color.

I’m sure you guys can help me out with other hidden cost of this plan?

Is there any veteran leadership left in the county? I’ve never seen a school system change principals and central office personnel as frequent as their socks.

I hope this answers some of your questions.

Why don't we let the staff make the case before we jump in and try to kill it. I know changes must be made or Hampton and Washington will forever turn out children unprepared for Middle School. New ideas from the BOE are few and far between. Let's encourage Dr. Grier and his staff in searching for new ideas. The one they we cannot do is to do nothing.

Joe Stafford said:

Concentrating on the old methods would be a "new idea" for this BOE. The current methods are not working, we must change. The BOE needs to lead the way in improving achievement. It makes no difference to me whether they use old methods or new methods.

systemofadown said:

Who's going to pay for all these new programs?

What if the parents do not support these new ideas?

Stormy said:

systemofadown,

1) You, the taxpayer, will pay for these new programs, just like always.

2) Does anyone on the board or administration really care if parents don't support these new ideas? To do so, would be an innovation.

Scrooge said:

Joe Stafford,

I absolutely agree with your comment that change is needed whether it be from old or new ideas. The biggest problem I see is no matter what path the school board takes, if any, is the lack of parental support. I'll repeat myself and I know that I speak for many: Until they STOP abducting kids, they will NOT have my support on ANY program.

I am NO longer assistanting in my child's classroom. I NO longer participate in fundraisers. I NO longer attend PTA meetings. I NO longer give a CRAP! Until I see this administration show me that they care about children--and more importantly start working WITH parents, I will NOT give one minute of my time to this system. They take my tax dollars without regard to my input, so we will also be "takers". Nope, no more good will from me.

I can again say that I am NOT alone in this decision.

Merry Freakin' Christmas Guilford Co. School Board!

debora said:

Dear Scrooge,
the only people that lose with that attitude are the students, one of which is your child. The PTA doesn't have anything to do with the school board or it's decisions. They are suppose to advocate for your child and their education. If they don't then the right people aren't in the position. I think what the school board did to the HP kids is terrible, but what you are doing to your own child and the rest of the children is also a shame. I hardly every agree with the board, but I for one will not abandon my child no matter what the situation is in his school. I would think that they need your help more than every now, but maybe I am blind to the good that parents can and often do in our schools.

Scrooge and Proud of it. said:

Debora,

Don't you worry, my child is NOT suffering because of my decision to stay away from school. I have NOT abandoned my child at all.

The Guilford County School Board has abandoned my child(ren). Your attempts at a guilt-trip should be aimed at them, not me and other parents.

Until you've walked in my shoes, don't judge. And don't worry, we won't be here long. We're going private as soon as the paperwork is done. So if you think kids are "suffering" because of lack of parental support, I suggest you make that the topic of your next speech--for whatever good that will do. They're not listening, Debora.

Scrooge2 said:

I agree with Scrooge. Debra, sorry but it is different for you. I would take NW with all its problems anyday. I certainly would support that school a lot.

But, I will not give Central one single dime. My child will not be there next year. I will need my money for private school or to move.

Merry Xmas School board.

Bruce,

I saw an article in the paper today telling us about the importance of Art and Music in our childrens Education.

Penn-Griffin and Weaver were listed as wonderful places to learn the Arts.

I was so Happy to see that you did not include Southwest High in this Mix...

Our School Administration sometimes list Southwest Guilford High in High Point,as a "WORLD CLASS ART MAGNET SCHOOL",,,,,,though we in High Point know that this Title is nothing more than SMOKE AND MIRRORS for the school board to Frauduelently attain more Federal Funding.

It seems that most of the students who are sent to Southwest for this program never filled out the Paper work for the Choice Plan and were sent there by the school board to balance Racial and Socio-Economic Quotas..........

In another article in the N&R last week,,I read about how tough it was for any Group in the Arts field to sustain itself Financially....The only Jobs I see in the Paper involving Arts are House Painters or as Dancers at the TIKI CLUB.....

I for one do not overlook the importance of the Arts but , I must question the amount of resources we spend on teaching a curriculum that sends our children down a DEAD END STREET.

We would be smarter to start a Sports Magnet Program,,,,,,Kids probably have a Better chance of making an NBA Roster than making a living as an Artist.

It is time our school board drops the "WORLD CLASS ARTS MAGNET SCHOOL" at Southwest and allows this School to once again become the SUCCESSFUL NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOL that it was before the Socialist Takeover in High Point.

debora said:

Dear Scrooge,
I haven't had to face what you do with your child and going to a school not of your choosing, but I would like to think that I would still support that school if I had to, not an easy choice! I do talk to many school board members and have repeatedly (like all of you) said the IT plan was wrong, both morally and educationally. I know that Anita's new plan would address that problem. I don't know how the wind is blowing on that map, but from listening to the meetings it is clear that Susan, Dot, probably Walter still like the plan. I personally hope it is defeated!

I still think that your child would benefit from knowing that you support them and their school even with a bad situation like it is! I agree with fighting the school board (not that it is working)but I think you can do both by supporting the school and fighting the board. We just view this differently, but I do support your fight.

Scrooge2 said:

Until you have been there. Until you have been screwed and your child kidnapped to one of the worst schools in the state then you will know!

I will NOT give ANY money to Central!

All I can feel like doing is going down there and taking a great big fat dump on the doorstep!
On the way back I would take a dump on Eugene st. too!

Once again, don't criticise unless it has happenned to you.

Mother Hen said:

Debora, I feel that you are trying to understand the chaos that the High Point parents of High Schoolers have gone thru, but until your child is affected, you will not understand. ..Imagine for a moment that you volunteered for many years at your child's school. Several of your children went thru the same elementary, then middle, then High at your "neighborhood" schools. You volunteered money, time, hugs, tears, and even sacrificed a high-paying job because you wanted to be active in the lives of your children.

THEN, with NO notice, with NO warning, a handful of school board members make a decision that they say will be "for the best."

So, Debora....now my child is confronted with the "choice" of 3 schools. Forced to rank 1,2,and 3 which schools she "would like" to attend. Forget that there's a High School less than 2 miles down the road from us--THAT's not even one of the 3 options on the lottery form!!!!No, the choices on the lottery form are our 3rd, 5th and 7th closest High Schools.

The KICKER Debora, is the fact that the school board makes this decision in less time than it takes to take a good CRAP. And they SMUGLY tell you that THEY are smarter than PARENTS and THEY make the decisions and that MY opinions are worth NOTHING!

If I'm such a valuable person, and I'm so desparately needed at my child's school, then why don't my opinions matter????

You see Debora, I'm a mother. I have had NOTHING but the welfare of my children on my mind 24/7 for almost 17 years now. I can say that I'm pretty experienced in mothering. If you knew my children you would see that I'm not 1/2 bad at it either. And I dare to say that those who know me and my children will tell you that they're pretty good kids.

So, I must be doing something right. So my decision to go on STRIKE against Guilford County Schools is no different than any other little decision that I make each day. My maternal instincts are applauding that decision and I would wager BIG bucks and say that you too Debora would do the same if this catastrophe came to your "neighborhood" school. If I were you I'd go kiss the very foundation of your precious schools because it's only a matter of time before they get ripped out from under you.

Debora, if parents don't take a BIG stand against this board, they will not realize their mistake. They have lost me, and more are following each day. If they cared, they would re-think their impulsive decision to bus kids. They know that busing is illegal and they have found a way to do it legally. Until we cry FOUL, it will continue. And much worse, it will spread.

Sorry to go on and on but from one mother to another, you must surely feel our pain. I wish my only concern was the construction details of a new school building. But for me, it's my children being bused pass 6 High Schools to get to their 7th closest one!

God bless Debora and have a very Merry Christmas. NOT a Happy Holiday like Grier would like, but a MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Mother Hen,

Yes, I am feeling better, I saw my neighborhood doc this morning (I haven't been reassigned yet).

What happened was that I was out on Saturday night, and got run over by some reindeer while walkin' home. It wasn't Christmas Eve, but it was a winter break celebration down the road. I did have a little too much egg nog, and I had forgotten my medication, so I stumbled out into the snow. Fortunately, they found me alright, but I had some hoof prints on my forehead, but I'm alright now. I swear, though, that as the reindeer ran away, I heard someone say "You've been Grier-ended and now stay off of the Chalkboard.", whatever that means.
