You and Jennifer are doing a stellar job of covering this story, especially, just before the Christmas holidays. Keep up the good work, and don't let some discourage you.

Is it true when Doug says that his is an editor's blog and he can make editorial comments, but you and Jennifer are reporters, and your only function is to report. You aren't allowed to participate in the discussion?

We can participate in a discussion, but as reporters our job is to report what we see, hear, etc. It's not our job to tell you how we feel about the superintendent, the choice plan, the color of the sky, etc. in an article. We can write a story about what the superintendent says and does, what we know about the choice plan and why the sky is blue, etc.

I'm sure you get the point.

Doug, on the other hand, actually does get paid to offer his opinions. So he can write about what he thinks of the superintendent, choice plan and sky color.

The blogs make it interesting since people want us to take sides on issues. But that's really not our job. We have to try to step back and look at everything from all angles: yours, theirs and that guy in the back row who maybe doesn't have kids in school but his taxes certainly go into the school system's coffers.

I understand. A great little system there for keeping everyone on the reservation of ideas. It's too bad that the newspaper doesn't allow a diversity of opinions and ideas to flow, especially when the editors are crying over the lack of diversity. This kind of caste system is probably contributing to the newspaper industry's bleeding of readership. All one can get out of one newspaper is the the opinion of the editorial board, even though there are other eyes and minds that could be valuable. That may be one of the reasons for the rise of the blog influence.

Believe me, Stormy; there are plenty of times I'd love to offer an opinion on the news (and usually, it has nothing to do with education issues. I'm much more opinionated about other topics - and I certainly don't always agree with our editorial position, although that's a whole 'nother subject.)

But I guess the idea is that as a reporter, we don't have the luxury to turn our opinions on and off like a water faucet.

When we write something for the paper, you, the reader, depends on us to be objective, fair and balanced. You have to believe we're giving you the honest news - not our slant on the news.

So I guess it would be hard for us to share our opinions on these blogs. It might make someone think, "Oh, we know how Bruce really feels, so how can we trust him to tell it straight in the paper?"

That's why we can't express our personal opinions on the news, particularly the subjects we cover (in our case, education).

You said that Doug Clark gets paid to offer his editorial opinions?!! I hope it's not very much.

I agree that Bruce and Jennifer have done a great job. I wonder what lots of us would have done this past year and 1/2 had we not had the "Chalkboard"!! It's been a great place for venting, a great source for information, and has provided a place for parents to comminucate.

Merry Christmas Bruce and Jen. You deserve something really nice under your Christmas tree this year. Bless you both.

Would also like to commend Mr. Hoekstra on the outstanding job with the maps. After all; how easy can it be to every week have to listen to your boss say; "Eric, how 'bout this week you draw a map screwing the people on Guilford College Road. "Eric, this week, lets shaft Oak Hollow Estates". "Okay, Eric, this week we're gonna give it to Adams Farm. Or how about the people out on Sandy Ridge". This week let's give a little back to Dot and Sue, make em' sweat a little, make it about 75% FRL just to keep them honest".

Eric doesn't seem sadistic in a Sykesian type way. One can only assume he's just a regular type guy doing what he is asked. But by now, he has to be one of the most disgusted, jaded people around (excluding the SW parents of course) seeing what his boss does to people week after week, either out of ineptidude, lack of awareness, not caring, vindictiveness or just because he can.

I'll add my best to everyone else's wishes for the two of you. I apologize for any difficulties or discomforts that I have personally caused the two of you this past year. You've both been troopers and taken a lot of heat from some of us. I wish you both a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday.

I know you guys have been asking us to publish the High Point redistricting map that Dr. Grier presented Monday night.

We haven't been able to get that in an electronic format yet, so I can't put it on The Chalkboard. I did receive a paper copy, but quite frankly, it is unreadable. There are red lines, green lines and gray lines all over this map, but no legend explaining what any of them mean. The map also lacks many street names, which would greatly help in reading it.

I spoke to our graphics editor and he said, "It's unpublishable in this format." I agree - I follow this stuff on a daily basis and I can't make heads or tails of this map. We sure don't want to tell people, "You might be going to this school" and be wrong about it.

Not to rant and rave before Christmas, but how hard would it be to present a map with three simple lines: one for Central, one for Andrews and one for Southwest? Is that too much to ask for?

We'll try to get a cleaned-up version, but it may be after the holidays. I appreciate your patience.

Stormy, that may be the best suggestion I've heard all year!

I forwarded a name to Jennifer for a student who wants to move back to SW. Unfortunately the numbers indicate that as many as 125 students opted out of the Public Schools for private High Schools. I know 4 private High Schools who will be disappointed with the new plan.

As a point of correction of past information, I found the first version of the choice plan proposed by Alan Duncan in a Board Meeting almost a year before High Point Plan was suggested. After further research and discussion I believe that it was Mr. Grier who created plan, but what it became is an elephant built to OSHA specifications. Could it have been done better? Maybe, but not without admitting the real problems first. Forced lottery would not have been required if the needs of all the children were being considered.

Unfortunately we ended worse than where we began. The School Board, always wanting more money, lacking credibility as custodians of the public responsibility to educate our young, manipulated by a Shyster-like manager and quibbling among themselves about French fries and giving away millions in real estate to other organizations has stretched the institutions credibility beyond imagination.

Intelligent voices like Anita Sharpe wanting the Board to evaluate itself for once. Nancy Routh is always trying to get to the meat of the problems. Deena Hayes frequently asking the right questions of Mr. Grier but not having the Board’s support to bring forth a good answer. Guilford County can find so much in happiness and prosperity if we would just fix our quality of education. It has to start from the top and bottom. Teachers being supported in safe clean schools, Administration …

Oh well, maybe I can have a good dream and we all can have a Merry Christmas. You folks have a Merry Christmas and thanks for trying to keep the public informed.

This is no surprise that this map is unreadable. All the maps of the past used to be readable. Now they are whipping these maps out so fast. It sure seems funny that no one (not even board members) can figure out all the colored lines, stars, arrows, etc.

It seems like the Monday map was seen at some other time. mmmmm -where was that??? Funny how this map just happened to be ready right after the vote.

Timing of the Monday vote is NOT a coincidence. Usually the redistricting forums for input are around MLK or another holiday when people are supposed to be out of town and have no time to organize. This time it is just in time for Christmas break. Never under estimate the power of e-mail and good friends. Never under estimate the power of ORGANIZED voters. The time is near.
