New principal at Northwest
I meant to post this earlier, but something else came up this week (don't know what that could be...)
Guilford County's biggest high school is getting a new leader. When the spring semester begins next month, Angelo Kidd will take over as principal of Northwest High School.
Kidd is a veteran, having been principal at Northeast High School since 2001 and before that, he spent four years as principal at Southern High School. He always seems to get results and respect wherever he goes and just a couple of weeks ago, Northeast won the inaugural Hugh Humphrey Cup, given for high school academic improvement.
Retired GCS principal Butch Brigman (who was principal of Penn-Griffin Middle, Bessemer Elementary and Wiley Elementary) will serve as interim principal at Northeast until a permanent leader can be found.
In other personnel news, former Southeast High School principal and GCS administrator Barbara Zwadyk is leaving the district to become an assistant superintendent with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth Schools. Dr. Zwadyk was a big help to us over the years and we certainly wish her well at her new job.

Y does Grier keep changing people around?

Does anyone besides me think turnover is a direct result of the job instability?
Wonder how Northeast feels about losing Mr Kidd?

Hmmmm, "assistant superintendent"....that has a nice ring to it. I think we need one of those and then slash Grier's salary by half. Aren't two heads better than one? I think our poor superintent of is just screaming out for help. Isn't he? Or are we seeing the best that he can do?
Well, at least Northwest gets a veteran principal. Why on earth wasn't this guy considered for Andrews High School? Or would that have run him off to the next county too? Why there's not a seasoned, veteran at Andrews is still a mystery.

What happened to the principal that
was a Northwest?

NWHS's Dr. LeGrand gave notice and left the last of November to work in Charleston SC. In the last 1/5 years we have had complete turnover in all administration-- 2 were promoted to principals, others left. I hope the Mr Kidd will be a good fit for that school.

Merry Christmas to all my blogging buddies!
Somebody wake B.Joe up and let him know the choice plan had ended. Before his song is sealed in the vault, I thought it deserved to be aired one more time so here it is:
**************************************************
Sing to tune of Green Day's "When September Ends"
Summer has gone so fast,
the innocence can never last.
Wake me up, when the choice plan ends.
Dottie's baloney came to pass
Two years has gone by so fast,
Wake me up when the choice plan ends.
Here comes Doug Clark again, telling us how to live.
Drenched in the pain again, that we feel in all our rears.
And as their memory rests, but never forget what they (the kids) lost.
Wake us up when the choice plan ends.
Wake us up, when the choice plan ends.
Ring out the bells again,
like we did when spring began.
Wake us up when the choice plan ends,
Wake us up, when the choice plan ends.
Here comes the fear again,
waiting to see who else will be screwed,
leaving no alternative, to pack that van and move.
Wake us up when the choice plan ends.
Wake us up when the choice plan ends.

Bruce/Jennifer,
I have a friend who works in the central office at the W-S Forsyth school district. She left the GCS central office after Grier's arrival. This person is a PhD and well known in academia. She told me that I would not believe how many teachers, administrators, etc. have left GCS for W-S Forsyth in the last few years.
This is a hard question for you - but is there anyway to quantify this number? Do you happen to know?

Bruce/Jen
NEW STRAND REQUEST.
Please post a copy of the article "A place where poor students can aim high" Gaston, N & R 12/26/05 page B7 (sadly hidden in the obituaries)
Please start this as a new strand. This is exactly the kind of proven strategy that could really help schools like Andrews.
THANK YOU.
Hope you are enjoying your little holiday break.
