No joy in Shelby

Well, Grimsley High's football team is going to state championship - and they won't get their uniforms dirty.

The Whirlies won tonight's scheduled semi-final game vs. Crest (of my hometown of Shelby). The Chargers admitted using an ineligible player, which meant they had to forfeit tonight's contest.

Personally, I'm sorry to see this happen. I know the fans of both teams were looking forward to seeing a game tonight - thousands were expected to attend. I'm sure the Grimsley players would rather win on the field, too. But rules are rules, so there isn't anything else that could be done.

Two years ago, teams at 11 Guilford County high schools and 13 middle schools were found using ineligible players in various sports. The violations were because the students in question missed too many days of school.

So what do you think about this particular situation or about the role of high school sports in general? Do we, as a society, put too much emphasis on high school athletics? Or are they a healthy outlet for players and fans alike?

I support academics over athletics. In this particular instance, couldn't they have played an 'exhibition' game?

What is this a replay of Gil Thorpe in real life? Don't they read the comics on the sports page in Shelby, or maybe the problem is that they do read them.

Bruce, how does this relate to falling academic standards, discipline problems, a choice plan that no-one wants, overcrowded schools, or redistricting debates. Or, is this like the minority contractor issue? an issue that no-one except a few really deem important to educating our children? Given all of the problems with GCS, this is totally non-sequitor. Lets tackle real issues, not non-issues.

No Joy in High Point.

Once again the High Point High Schools play hosts to the HP Police Department.

Once again the Administration refuses to release these incidents to the media.

If the true numbers on crime in our schools ever come out,,,there will be a Mass Exodus from GCS.

The time is NOW...grier MUST GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I read it right,,,Todays N&Rs' editorial was an Endorsement for a Choice Plan Lottery throughout Guilford County Schools....

The time is now for all of GCS to reap the benefits that only High Point has been privvy to....

Krissie, Alan, Smarti,,,,One of you should make the motion and lets get this thing started!!!

I am sure the "Civil Rights Activists" on the board can't wait to see Dudley and Northwest finally get their Race precentages to 50%.

'tis the season, I suppose. I'm eager to see what the Christmas display looks like. And, of course, I'll gladly post photos on The Chalkboard.

However, the weather is pretty crummy - has today's Holiday Light Spectacular been postponed?

Over at Doug Clark's blog "Off the Record" (link at right), you have an opportunity to comment on yesterdays N&R editorial against 'neighborhood' schools.

"To satisfy the anonymous blogger questioning whether our edit board has the courage to reveal specific authors of editorials: yes, we have no problem with that, as long as you understand that editorials are indeed the product of a collective point of view. That said, I wrote the edit on neighborhood schools published this morning. It made no mention of the High Point choice plan but stated a general principle that we hope the school board would apply countywide. We are not in favor of defacto racial and economic segregation for the reasons stated in the edit."

I just thought some might be interested.

John, I don't see where there is the opportunity to post a comment on that. I see where the person tried to hijack the thread on using animals for lab research, but I cannot see any discussion, or even a heading, on the editorial regarding the schools. If you see this and can point me in the right direction, I would love to see such a discussion, and kinda figured there would be one here.

Thanks very much,

Michelle

Michelle,

That's a great idea. I'll start a new thread for folks to talk about that editorial.

Thanks and keep us posted, General. And I appreciate the invitation - I'd be honored to come out.

The previous displays on SW School Road have been creative and funny, but not mean-spirted, in my opinion. I'm looking forward to seeing what the merry pranksters of North High Point have come up with this time!

Michelle,

You're right, it's in the PETA thread. But since Bruce has indicated that you could post comments anywhere and (until a little while ago) there is no dedicated thread, I thought some people might like to post there.

But now there's a thread here! (Thanks, Bruce!)

Michelle,

It's in the thread called "High Point Market Numbers" under "Off the Record" at Doug Clark's site.

There are lots of interesting posts.

Barbara Ann said:

Okay I have just posted under the PETA stand at Doug's site. I think Bruce, the many postings appeared there, as Doug had mentioned he wrote the editorial.

I see you are giving him a break and starting a strand here.

General - what times is the Holiday Light Spectacular on Friday? Are the Rockettes still coming?

bruce buchanan said:

And feel free to keep posting over at Doug's site. I just thought you guys might like to talk about it over here, too.

Barbara Ann said:

Thank you Bruce for starting this strand. I just posted here. Thanks for all your hard work.
